: Rabble Day

First of all, we are very excited to kick off Inaugural International Mish Mash Month today. Whether you are new to this nebulous neighborhood of the site, or whether this celebration might spark fond memories or inspiration to finish a Mish Mash-related project, we hope you feel welcome!

Let's kick it off with the time-honored tradition - rabbling before something really gets started. Feel free to check in, rabble and/or speculate on what's to come here ITT.

Mish Mash games (including LSGs) continually give opportunities to play board games with other scummers. We've competed in games like Clue and Rolling Realms. We've cooperated against a common enemy in Pandemic, Betrayal at House on the Hill and Codenames. Care to join the fun?

Let's discuss! What board games are fun to play online? What board games do you enjoy that you haven't had the opportunity to play recently? What is your Board Games Motivation profile? Who is your character of choice in Betrayal at House on the Hill?

As for me,

I tried Paint the Roses on Board Game Arena recently and I like the tool for charting what possibilities are available, so it might be hard to get used to a different interface. I would like to play Spyfall and Tragedy Looper again at some point. In Betrayal, I have been known to pick Heather > Zoe > Flash.

In post 10, Farren wrote: I've had an ongoing game of The Crew: Mission Deep Sea on BGA for over a year now, and still no signs of stopping. Awesome cooperative trick-taking game.
I love the Crew! I am trying to save the sequel til I get through the original though. :]
In post 11, mallowgeno wrote: That's a pretty sweet tool. Mine ended up being more towards the strategy side. Board games are definitely my jam, I have a decent collection of them and I try to meet weekly with a friend group from college to play. We've been playing through Frosthaven but we do love to play other things from time to time (we played Twilight Imperium last night).

If anyone wants to add me or play something on BGA I'm down
How are you liking Frosthaven?

About BGA, I just found N's "MafiascumDotNet" group. Looks like you were already there, but I actually had no idea BGA had functionality for groups. I think it could be fun to try to do a once-a-month BGA thing. Gives time to learn new games beforehand too.

What better place is there than here to clean out your clipboards? Feel free to do a little ctrl+v there today and you may just find yourself a moral victor 20 years from now. But in this thread, I have a little activity for you. Pick out a post from Xalxe's "What is on your clipboard?" thread, quote it here, and wildly speculate on why that was on their keyboard.

Being involved in Mish Mash can give you unique opportunities to connect with people on the site. Sometimes people stay in touch with their allies after a LSG, or find out that their out of game friend was temporarily their enemy. Sometimes entire Mish Mash games are themed around getting to know each other better. In games like Loaded Questions & Loaded Pictures, we've had to sus out who said what. In Xalxe's What Were You Thinking? series, we've learned more about ourselves as a collective. Another time, we all compared ourselves to a certain Miltank.

For today's Identity-based prompt, please share a fact about yourself that is oddly specific enough that is unlikely to be true of other posters. Bonus points if it's a little-known fact! :]

I'll start: I have viennese waltzed with someone who was dressed as Link.

Today, let's talk all things chess. Thoughts on openings or other strategies? What is your chess claim to fame? Who is your chess inspiration? Are there any chess variants you like?
Is it obvious from these questions that I have never actually played chess??
Since we have a whole dedicated chess subforum, the best way to celebrate this theme would be to issue a chess challenge!

Movie lovers have delighted in a variety of movie-related fun in The Whole Sort of General Mish Mash. We've watched them together (and might again if we bug VashtaNeurotic to get us organized!) We've even reviewed them together and answered trivia related to them together!

I'll give two suggestions on how to celebrate here: (1) Let us know the last movie you watched and what you thought of it. (2) Inspired by Kublai Khan's award-winning "Guess the movie from the screenshot," post a movie screenshot for us to guess. :] Here's one for you:

Normally, the Mods put a wrench in upping our counting record. Let's try a little role reversal ITT today! Any site mods can try to count as high as possible, but they'll need to be cautious. Any other user's contribution to the count will cause them to need to restart.

A common way to win various games is to get a high score. Today, let's practice! Participate by playing a game of your choice and post the highest score you get. If you need inspiration, there's always LSG challenges. Would you like to quickly and accurately do a Logic Puzzle or minesweeper or something?
How about showing us a high score in games like Geoguessr, 2048, or Robot Unicorn Attack?

Many of us originally joined MS because we have an interest in social deduction games of some sort. There are many non-mafia ones we have tried out on the site so far. Games like Behind the Mask and the Resistance are Mish Mash classics. Perhaps you know of a new that would be fun? Feel free to make a signup thread! :]

Today's discussion prompt is themed around the 3-person social deduction game Win, Lose, Banana. From today or the past week, let us know of a: (1) "Win" or highlight from the last week, (2) "Lose" or lowpoint, (3) "Banana" - the closest thing to banana that you ate!

Many Mish Mash games and LSGs offer mental challenges and opportunities to learn. I'd like to challenge you to go try your hand at Zendo Questions, a game where we collectively find the underlying rule. Or are math and logic puzzles more up your alley? Check them out and give it a try today! Also, /in for the Codenames queue if you enjoy the challenge of putting together or deciphering semantic clues.

Wishing and yearning can be a powerful feeling. But, where's the joy in
granting
wishes? Most people just want to game the system and wish for more wishes.

Well, we think the vintage Spoil a Wish approach is more realistic and entertaining. I'll start by posting my wish. The next poster should explain the caveat/consequences of granting my wish and then post their own wish. Have fun!

I wish I could see the northern lights in person.

Another cool approach to gaming together in Mish Mash is one of collective decision-making. The "MS Plays" trend is a great example of this. Your input is needed for Farren with Stardew Valley and Korina with Slay the Spire. Check those out today! If you're also in need of the "MS Plays" hive mind for your gaming needs, feel free to put up a thread of your own!

Write an apology of 100 words or less. Most insincere apology wins. You have until Thrill of the Hunt Day starts. Your time starts now.

: Thrill of the Hunt Day

Image
The United Nations

Large Social Games often feature hidden advantages to be earned. Often these come in the form of "immunity idols" that protect a player from elimination. The catch is that they need to be found before another player does, and they can be quite tricky to find!

In celebration of this tradition, I worked together with ambic on a hunt activity. Simply privately message me a correct key word/phrase, and I will respond with a corresponding image of your hard-earned trophy. Today at least, you don't need to be first in order to earn any prizes, and y'all are also welcome to collaborate if desired.

To get you started - can you find the flags you need?
Karachi? Leipzig?
Durango? Lafayette?
Elmira? Quebec?
Abuja? Panama City?
Wichita? Lyon?

: Grand Jury Day

Image
Papua New Guinea

In some Mish Mash games and LSGs, the final trial involves winning over a jury. Over the years, we've seen fickle, bitter and forgiving jurors alike across traditional games like Survivor or more experimental games like Allocate/Execute & SPITFLY. Their role is typically to ask questions, deliberate and cast votes.

I'm curious: have you ever been called for any type of jury duty? What do you value most when it comes time to cast your vote regarding someone's fate?

Writing together is a time-honored tradition in Mish Mash. We have games like One Sentence Story and have done various roleplaying games together over the years.

To celebrate, our suggested activity today is writing Haikus together. I'll start with a 5-syllable line. Poster #2 can write the second 7-syllable line. Poster #3 can finish it, and title it if they so choose. Then, let's start again. Will we aim for quality or quantity?

: Character Development Day

Sri Lanka

For anonymous LSG players, part of the fun is getting to portray a character based on the game's theme. Characters have included fictional characters, real people, animals and other creatures. We've been celebrating our boldest & brightest since 2017 in the yearly Character Poll.

To practice, answer one or more of the following questions while portraying a character. If you have no idea where to start, here's a random character generator. It's up to you if you want to tell us who you are!
1. What are your plans this weekend?
2. What are your hobbies?
3. Can I trust you?
4. What could possibly go wrong if we stick to the plan?
5. Do you prefer to take control of a situation or fly under the radar?
6. What qualities do you look for in a friend?

The Mashies help us memorialize great games, mods and players each year. Personally, I am a proud Mashtermind and Smash Mouth winner, and also a proud nominator of some very deserving winners. :] There's so many ways to celebrate and contribute to this tradition today. You can nominate someone in the Mashies Nominations 2023 thread. You can provide ideas and constructive feedback about the Mashies here. You can also review the Mashies winners of recent years: on the wiki. You can can reach out to the Scummies MS account if you have any interest in helping out with the 2022 ceremony so we can find out who our winners are! And you can of course let xofelf know if you'd be interested in being a Mashies judge this year.

Sometimes games have elements of luck or other unexpected events that lead to the demise of competent and likeable players. April 21
: #1 Ban Day

Image
Colombia

Most of us have never held the weighty ban hammer or other mod responsibilities. We have had a whole genre of games themed around enjoying the benefits of that power without any of the actual obligations. You can let out your desire to modkill people in Fake Modding without repercussions. There's also the Fake Ban thread if that's more to your taste.

To keep things light, let's focus on behaviors rather than people in our discussion ITT for the day. Let us know: if you had absolute power, what's a pet peeve of yours that you would ban?

April 22
: Assassination Attempt Day

Image
Bosnia and
Herzegovina

Have you been wondering what today was going to entail? So in Mish Mash, being assassinated is defined as having your posts sandwiched by someone else. And no, you cannot defend yourself by double-posting. Normally, people sign up for an Assassin game anonymously and then are provided certain targets to seek out.

Today, I would like to invite y'all to some friendly competition. Here are the details:
1. For our one-day event, you may try to assassinate someone in any thread falling under Discussion or Other Forum Games. That would include this thread!
2. Post ITT with the thread ID #, post #s, and the name of your victim to score a point for assassinating them. (The thread ID is what comes after the "t=" at the end of the thread's URL. Also, I prefer no quotes as proof since some forums may be non-indexed! Definitely do not quote non-indexed forums).
3. The
last
post of the post sandwich should be time-stamped after my Assassination Attempt Day post.
4. Victims should be unique; you won't earn any points if someone else already claimed your same victim.
5. You will lose 1 point if you get assassinated yourself. If egregious, I also reserve the right to dock points as a penalty from people claiming targets inaccurately!
6. Make sure to follow any forum rules regarding spam, etc. :]

Example: Klick assassinated Cheetory6 in thread ID 90488 in Mafia Discussion (post #0-2), but wouldn't gain points for it in this event because of the timestamp of post #2.

Like jigsaw puzzles? They can make or break you in a LSG; just ask Vash! :] Jigsaw Planet has some fun options if you want to try one today. Recommending the "ghost" button in the bottom-left area under the puzzle pieces to save time.

: Pukebox Hero Day

If Pukebox made you think of our friend schadd_, you were very right. He is notable in Mish Mash partly because he has bravely challenged anyone and everyone to take him on at Dominion. Do we have any new challengers? Consider it today. Maybe we can brainstorm some pro strats here.

: Riddle Me This Day

Image
Latvia

Do you like riddles? Looks like we were really into them around 2010. Then, several years later, we had an Umineko-inspired Murder Riddles trend. Not too sure about the latter just because I haven't watched the anime yet and don't really want spoilers in case I ever do, but it looks interesting at a glance.

I am inviting y'all to get vintage today. I have posted a riddle in the spoiler tag below. Feel free to post your own riddle, or to try to guess the answers to any riddles that have been posted.

Spoiler:
What goes up and down but doesn’t move?

: Predict the Future Day

Image

Did you know that the Whole Sort of General Mish Mash is a great place to flex your prophesying skills? Keep an eye out for opportunities to make predictions about sports, politics, TV shows and (simulated) investments! Or, perhaps you have an idea for our next topic - even as bold as 3022 Sci-fi Baseball.

To honor this tradition, please post at least one prediction here. We'll try to remember to check back on all of them a year from now!

April 27
: Walrus Awareness Day

Image
Canada

Spoiler: sleepy walrus

Image

In case you were unaware, a Walrus game is all about matching up songs to a requested category. To celebrate, I'll start by posting a prompt. The next poster ideally should attempt to respond with a song fitting my prompt and then post their own prompt. Also, if you want to post a walrus image, we won't stop you.

Requesting a song that evokes nostalgia.

April 28
: Bracket Breaker Day

Image
Kenya

In the "What Were You Thinking" series of Mish Mash games, the concept is a lot like Family Feud in that you want to try to repeatedly give popular answers. Whoever gives the least popular answers in a round gets knocked down in the standings. Questions would usually be something like "Name five nice smells" and then people who say stuff like Grass and Napalm don't score as well as people who say Flowers. However, the real upsets usually happened when there was a multiple choice question with only 2 possible answers. That's because it would tend to guarantee more people falling in the standings from a single round.

I wanted to do a little callback to one of these controversial questions today. Let's see what's most popular in 2023 - Harevocado or Rocktopus?

Spoiler: Harevocado

April 29
: Everyone Please Yield Challenge (EPYC) Day

Image
Gibraltar

Whether you call it by Telephone Pictionary or a bizarre EPYC acronym, this series is one of Mish Mash's most famous and popular. We've also had a couple of spinoff games of Dixit and Mysterium to help celebrate the great artwork that has come from these.

Here are my guidelines for today's celebration:
1. To start a chain with a sentence, create a new thread in Frogstar World. In the OP, within a spoiler tag, put your starting sentence.
2. Link the thread back into the main IMMM 2023 topic.
3. If you want to be the next link in someone's chain, first post "claim." Then, look at the most recently posted spoiler tag. If there's a sentence in their spoiler, then you would draw it. If there's a drawing in their spoiler, you would summarize it as a sentence. We still want all our posts to be in spoiler tags to allow people to self-moderate.
4. ???
5. We see collectively how much we can get done in one day. :]

April 30
: Endless Possibilities Day

Image
Sierra Leone

International Mish Mash Month is winding down, but the games go on. Thanks for being part of IMMM, part of the site, and/or among the people who still use forums.

It's possible that there may be an International Mish Mash Month in the future. Are there certain days you'd recommend be kept on the calendar? Are there possibly some games mentioned that we'd like to see modded here before next year? Are there other events we'd like to see, such as something more along the lines of the Clash of the Mash?

It's nice to see StrangerCoug has already taken some initiative with reviving Spoil a Wish. On the LSG side, we have recent news that we have a mod team rebuilding their team and moving toward the next milestone.

In post 199, mallowgeno wrote: Despite the lack of responses I really enjoyed the EPYC day! Maybe if we moved it closer to the beginning those chains could continue to be made longer through the course of the month?

But honestly really appreciated you doing this Ariel, I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort.
Good feedback. Also, if people want to continue finishing the ones from this event to a similar amount of rounds as the standard game eventually, we could just bump this thread to celebrate any "completed" chains.
