The "what does ____ mean?" thread

There a bunch of mafia terms used on this site which are defined on the wiki.

There are also a bunch of mafia terms on this site which are NOT defined ANYWHERE. For instance, Openwolfing and Powerwolfing.

The purpose of this thread is to ask about such terms and then to define them.

I have a question:

What does "hero shot" actually mean?

I think this is used about vigilante shots which are used on the vigilante's scumread who isn't otherwise scumread.

I'm gonna present a more analytical view on the concept of a hero shot to explain why it's generally actually bad to hero shoot unless you are a dramatically above average player.

In any game, with fluctuations due to role actions and just game developments, there exist more Towny and less Towny players. As a general rule scum will be picking off people who are less likely to be eliminated (more Towny) and town will be limming people who are more likely to be eliminated (less Towny).

Let's say that, for the sake of this exercise, both town reads and the vigs reads are = rand, but different. When the vig is shooting people who are near the bottom of the scum pile, assuming they they aren't significantly better than the town consensus, they are helping all players reevaluate on flips. They also aren't wasting the shot ever if they shoot someone who would be mislimed anyway, since instead of getting a hero vig shot that doesn't get to include all the info from other PRs in the game for example you just get an extra day phase Lim. The fact that the cop has an inno on someone doesn't stop the vig from shooting them, but it often stops a Lim! Conversely, if the vig hero shoots, there certainly are situations where a big hero shot has killed the one townread scum and the game fell apart for scum, but if you assume the town and the player are average all the day lims get the benefit of all players info they should be better, and even in e.g. a vig 10er you just generally get more info in the game by flipping a player who has been contested for a while, since theres more activity surrounding them and reads given on them to analyze. Often if a hero scum goes down it doesn't actually help town win in my experience but your mileage may vary on that, I don't really have stats, whereas killing from the bottom up generally means more odds of hitting scum as well as just more value.

It is worth pointing out some players do have better reads than others, sometimes greatly so, and even though a lot of people who consider their reads above average are wrong if you are in fact a well above average player it's often best to shoot towards your scumreads in the upper end of null, shooting in the same pool that e.g. a cop would target.
2019 stats: Town WR 76.7%, overall WR 81.667%, 1 scum defeat involving a major mod error in lylo vs 8 scum wins.

I should clarify that to

You should shoot your top scumreads that are in low to high nullreads of consensus, ideally higher getting people who either would be just not scummy enough to be limmed or who would be limmed late in the game. Generally unless you are an S tier player you should not shoot widely townread players; I have seen so many vigs who felt the need to hero shoot widely townread power players who were carrying games in my time. Don't be them.

Enjoy this little diatribe on hero shooting, or don't!

Openwolfing is when you're intentionally acting scummy as scum, usually to divert attention from your partners.
Contrastively, powerwolfing is when you proactively and actively control the game in order to meet an agenda, often done through manipulation and domination of the town.
They seem to be terms coming from other sites though, which might be why they're not well documented.
