Exception
!Exception is a social deduction / hidden role game, where 4-8 players try to deduce which one of them is The Exception, and eliminate them. The twist is, The Exception does not know they are the exception at the beginning of the game - they have to figure it out before anyone else does.
The rules are pretty simple:
1. I, the moderator, will pick a general category of things, such as "things you can find in an average person's bedroom" or "foods" or "American clothing brands" or "companies that sell electronic products".
2. I will assign each of the players, except the randomly chosen Exception, a role (item) from that category. For example if the category is "foods that originate in Asia", one person could get "noodles" as their role, another could get "dumplings", another "sushi", and yet another "rice curry".
3. The Exception will not be informed they are the exception, but will be assigned a role from a different category. Following the above example of "foods from Asia", the Exception might get "tortilla" as their role (as it does NOT belong to the "foods from Asia" category).
4. I will message each player privately with the role assigned to them, and that is the only information they have. PLAYERS DO NOT KNOW THEIR ALIGNMENT.
5. Then, the game begins. Each player takes a turn, asking the other players a question (for example "How expensive are you?") and all other players then answer the question however they wish - they can answer informatively, partially, vaguely, or straight up lie if they choose to. After all other players have answered the question, the next player asks a different question (let's say, "are you tasty?"), and everyone else answers.
6. Once every player has asked one question, voting begins. Each player votes for who they think is the exception (unless you think you are the exception, in which case you should pretend to think someone else is the Exception and vote for them). When a simple majority is reached, the player who's voted out publicly reveals their role.
7. If they were the Exception, they get to make one guess of what the category for the other players was. If correct, they win. If incorrect, the other players win.
8. If they were NOT the Exception, then the game continues to a new round of questions, followed by another vote and elimination.
9. Play continues until the Exception is caught (and then makes a guess and wins or losses), or until 2 players remain (at which point the exception wins).
This ruleset above is slightly modified from how I used to play it with my friends, so may be slightly unbalanced in the Exception's favor. If it is found to be unbalanced, I will adjust it next game. If you think it's really unbalanced, let me know when you /in and I might change the win con to make it slightly harder for them to win.
