Alright kiddos, gather round. It's time I reveal the deep, dark secret of The Official Mafiascum Minecraft Server

There are two very good questions that have been asked and that I avoid answering
1) Where's the updated map?
2) Why dont you have a better backup than 3/1/11

Here's the short and simple of it. The world is actually broken. Like, very very broken. And until the griefer attack, I was content to just let it ride while I try and find out how to fix it.
This is the world as of 3/1/2011

I used 3 different map generators, and all 3 gave the exact same image. This told me that we actually have almost half of the world's chunks not in the world folder, and I'll be damned if I can find where they are. (Neither do the server admins know btw). I shrugged it off, it wasnt a big deal, we could still run the server while I investigate. But I also quit backing up when I discovered this anomoly.

So then, when we got griefed this week, I went ahead and made another back-up, and then made a new map. The map was identical to the previous month's world. This means that I cannot make backups of our world, I cannot upload any backups I do have without destroying half the world never mind erase a months work, and, ultimately I am truly and totally incapable of fixing any kind of future problems we may have such as corrupt chunks, griefs, whatever.

Bottom line is, I have to wipe the server and make a new world. This one will be gone by the end of the weekend.

2) Bukkit is installed. Start naming off mods/plugins you want. I can currently upload 5 without everything going haywire (depending on the mods. Some of them are...intense)

But hey, on the plus side, natural lapis lazuli and sandstone in all chunks! + more mushroom and flower spawns. Whoooo.

From one of probably many threads on the issue:

So my guess is that your server crashed mid save and caused these errors.

In the future, issue a /save-all command (or /#save-all) to save the map, then kick everyone (Use CommandHelper for cool alias creation like /kickall), then do /stop (or /#stop)
If you have a host with a control panel, shut your server down there AFTER you have done the above steps.
This will force save the map, then kick everyone to make sure no inventory loss (Possibly not a problem anymore), then stop the server "gradually"

Someone posted this in a different thread, which seems like it might work until a real fix on this bug is done. It also seems like a LOT of work, though, and I seriously doubt it would save us from having to start a new world, as far advanced as our world's... malady... seems to be.

I've been luckier than you thezeronumber, as I've been able to fix the occurences of chunk corruption in my world thanks to a 2 days old backup. So I have now set myself a reminder to take and keep a rolling set of back ups every 3 days.

Here is how I fixed the corrupted terrain:

I have a poster on another forum to thank for the how to. He said:

You can try a map editor or this Minecraft GPS mod.

The file names in the world folder tree are the chunks coordinates, but the format has them in base 36. So you will need to convert.



The minecraft GPS mod tool is a simple floating window which displays the number of the chunk of the world you are standing in, along with some other coordinates. Turns out the corrupted chunk was (29,-30).

Where it got fun was following the wiki information to find what file to replace:

An infdev level is actually a single folder containing at least one file named level.dat. The folder may also contain level.dat_old, a backup of level.dat. There is also a session.lock file to make sure only one Minecraft opens the world at once.

The world folder may have up to 64 subfolders, each with up to 64 additional subfolders each. These folders contain the chunk files that hold the world's terrain and entities. Each chunk file is identified by its chunk position xPos and zPos. The varying parts of the chunk file's name are obtained by taking the base36 representation of the xPos and zPos. The names of the folders that the chunk file is placed in are found by taking xPos and zPos, modulo 64, and converting to base36.



So, and for future reference in case I ever need to find other chunks, here is how I got the file name:

X=29, Z=-30

Folder name:

* The first folder name is base36(29 % 64). The modulo of 29 by 64 is 29. This is base36(29) which is "T".
* The second folder name is base36(-30 % 64). The modulo of -30 by 64 is 34 (64-30). This is base36(34) which is "Y".


Thus, the folder name is t/y/.

Chunk file name:

* The chunk file's name format is "c." + base36(x) + "." + base36(z) + ".dat". No modulo 64 is applied.
* The first part of the chunk file's name is base36(29) = "T"
* The second part of the chunk file's name is base36(-30) = "-U"


This evaluates to c.t.-u.dat

Thus, the chunk at (29, -30) is stored in "t/y/c.t.-u.dat" under the "world" directory.

I then found the file and replaced it with the old copy. Easy (once I got my head round it)!

I'll now keep a rolling series of backups covering several days and restore any other such chunks I find.

I'd advise everyone to keep similar rolling series of back ups if they aren't yet.

this is different from corrupt chunks. This is "Chunks aren't all in one folder apparently". f it were corrupt chuunks, we'd still have a single, whole map

I logged onto the server just to take some screenshots, then decided I was going to honour the death of the world by committing ritual suicide, first by fire (or more accurately, lava), then by water (drowning), then by air (falling from a great height), then by earth (getting asploded by monsters deep underground).

I am now at peace with the death of the server and ready to begin my new reincarnation. /zen

Someone needs to take some screenies (or even just leave the coords) of that trap-filled volcano fortress thing that was at X or Z value 5000. Forget who/where, except that people were talking about it once while I was in-game.

I don't care for any particular mod, but I would go for a whitelist.

I would have said we should implement the /sethome mod, but it appears beds now reset your spawn point, so we can just use those.

But yeah, +1 to the whitelist.
