Admin approve account?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Jun 16, 2012 7:31 pm

Post by BabyBlue »

I convinced my friend to join, but the first time he tried, when he submitted, he got an error saying he had exhausted all his registration attempts. This repeated every time he tried, so I tried to make the account for him. It worked, apparently due to my IP address already being associated with my own account, an admin has to approve it first. Is is possible someone could do this? Trust me, we are not the same person, and his IP will more than prove that, since he lives in another country.

The admins have lives too, BB. They'll get to it in the same amount of time they get to anyone else who's had this issue.

Have you considered that it might have been a bad idea to create an account for someone else?

I wouldn't have done it if there were another option, but I don't think it should be a problem. He'll change the password as soon as he gets into the account.

it takes a while, but as long as you said 'this is an alt for a friend' in the little message thing it should happen
I'll explain it to you. You have to get someone else to understand it for you.

Little message thing? And it's not an alt-he's never had an account before.

Try messaging Mr. Flay if you really need it.

Your friend will have to create their own account from their own IP. I am not comfortable with you having the password, even briefly (there are some quirks of account registration that can lead to a security vulnerability here).

If they are in love with the name, I can delete the one you made entirely which will free up the name.
Retired as of October 2014.

Can't you reset the password? He can't seem to create an account, as I said. Every time he tries, he gets that same error message. And it did take him a long time to come up with that name. That was why I tried to make the account for him. What is there to be uncomfortable about? I have no intention of even logging into the account, and you know the name of it, as well as my IP.

I have seen, in the past, potential members who were having issues with creating an account post (as "Guest") in the Help forum. I have no idea how they did so, but perhaps your friend needs to do that and manage his account creation on his own.

It's nice that you're trying to help him, but there are certain protocols that need to be followed.

His English is not good, and he was worried there might be a misunderstanding. And in the end, it seemed much faster to just create it for him and give him the password. I never imagined there would be a problem.

Don't hold your breath. I don't anticipate Flay's answer changing.

Protip: When an administrator of a board tells you they aren't comfortable doing something, you don't needle them and say "What's to be uncomfortable about?" -- no, you accept their answer and do it their way. They are, after all, in charge. That's why they're
administrators.

(And if, for some reason, you aren't sure that Mr. Flay is an Administrator, first of all, his username is red, which [on this board] signifies a member of the administration, and also, if you
click
on his name and view his profile, you'll see that he indeed a member of the Administrator usergroup.)

And before you complain that I'm not an administrator, be advised that they're really busy running this board (and they have lives), and they don't always have the time to pop in and answer on our time schedule. They do this all for free, so it's best to have lots of patience. So, I figured an answer from me would be better than silence.
....what?

It's a perfectly legit question. There's nothing I can do, with them knowing my IP and the account name. And surely an admin has the power to reset a password.

"How old are you?" is also a perfectly legit question, yet you refuse to answer it.

The admins have refused your request.

You need to stop posting in this thread. I don't know why you are so bent on giving me a hard time, but I've already asked that only an admin respond.

A) I am not giving you a hard time.

B) I can post anywhere I wish.

C) Asking non-Admins to stop posting in your thread is not only counter-productive, but borders on childish.
