It's kind of a good news, bad news kind of situation.

The bad news is, the mafia has moved into your town of South Gainsville, and is trying to take the town over and kill anyone who won't give in to them.

The good news is, you think the town might have a chance; after all, you know you do have a good local doctor working at a well stocked hospital in your town, high quality police department, and a nice gun shop the local vigilante can buy bullets from.

The bad news is, the mafia have already bought out the hospital, the police department, and the gun shop, and can close them down if they wish, possibly leaving your cop, vig, or doc helpless.

Oh well. I guess you're going to have to rely on mob justice after all.

Standard rules (Somewhat stolen from Mith)

1. The game will start with Night.

2. During Day, you may vote for the player you want to lynch. Votes should be bolded and in the form Vote: Player or they may not be counted. It is helpful, but not necessary, to "Unvote" when switching your vote to a different player.

3. Whenever a player has a majority of votes, that player will be lynched as soon as the mod notices the lynching post. "Twilight" posts (posts made after the lynching vote was cast, but before night starts) are allowed.

4. If discussion lags or Day goes on for too long, a deadline may be set. The deadline might be postponed once if player participation picks up.

5. Do not talk outside the thread unless your role allows it.

This is a modkillable offense.

6. If you're dead, you're dead. Do not talk until the game is over; this includes talking to living players outside the thread.

7. If you have any question, complaint, or comment, PM the Moderator.

8. Do not quote any PM's from the mod. Don't try to get around this rule by hinting at how many words were in the mod's PM to you, or what the first word of it was, or that the mod misspelled the fourth word in your PM, or by finding any other way to reveal the exact phrasing of the PM the mod sent you.

This is a modkillable offense.

9. This is a game. Have fun.

Special rules related to this game:

1. The win condition of each faction is to have at least one person of your faction left alive and everyone in the other factions dead. A tie between two factions, or in theory even between all three factions, is possible.

You may talk to your partner during Night. Each Night, you (as a group) may attempt to kill someone by sending a PM to the Moderator containing the name of that player and the member of the mafia attempting the kill.

If you are not making the kill tonight, you may switch the cop off, preventing him from using his ability tonight

You win if all other factions have been eliminated and there is at least one mafia member left, or if mafia victory in inevitable.

You are the SK.

Each night, you may attempt to kill someone by sending a PM to the moderator containing the name of that player.

You may also switch on or off any of the mafia switch every night; for example, you could say “Tonight, I kill player X, and I will prevent both the mafia doc switch and the mafia vig switch from switching off the doc or the vig”, and then the mafia will be able to switch off the cop if they wish, but not the doc or the vig. You may leave all 3 mafia switches “active”, turn all 3 off preventing them from switching the town power roles off, or any combination in between.

You win if all other factions have been eliminated and you are still alive.

COP

You are a Cop.

Each Night, you may send a PM to the Moderator containing the name of another player. If your investigation succeeds and the player is still alive at the start of Day, you will be told whether that player is Guilty or Innocent.

You win if all other factions have been eliminated and there is at least one pro-town player left.

DOCTOR

You are a Doctor.

Each Night, you may send a PM to the Moderator containing the name of another player. If this succeeds, this player will be protected from a kill attempt that Night.

You win if all other factions have been eliminated and there is at least one pro-town player left.

VIGILANTE

You are a vigilante.

Each Night, you may send a PM to the Moderator containing the name of another player. If this succeeds, this player will be killed that Night.

You win if all other factions have been eliminated and there is at least one pro-town player left.

The horror you feel when you find the corpse was somewhat mitigated when you discover that Chaotic had a sharp, bloody knife under his black cloak, along with piano wire, a book titled "How to be a Serial Killer", and a card in his wallet that has him listed as a member of the "National Serial Killer Union". Sitting in a dark police station, Shadowlurker was trying his best to continue to look for scum, dispite the fact that the crooked town council had completly shut down all funding, taken away his police car, fired all the other police officers working, and and even all electricity and phone lines to the building. And yet he still had not given up. He was sitting there, trying to read people's police files by flashlight to figure out who was behind all of this, when someone apparently kicked in the door of the police office and shot him in the chest multiple times.

Anyway, I don't think this game was very balanced; the scum had a strong advantage in the game setup, I think. I actually made one minor change from the way the game was discribed in the "open role" forum by making it so that the scum making the kill couldn't switch off his target, so the town power roles would at least have a chance to do something, but even with that the game was weighed pretty heavily agaisnt the town, I think.

The scum played quite well, of course, both with their play during the day and with figuring out who the cop was for their night 2 kill, and they got some lucky breaks (killing the SK night one really helped the scum out a lot, I think), but nonetheless I think I'm going to suggest in the open role thread that the game not be re-run in the same format without some changes to balance it better. Thoughts?

1) This game was VERY unbalanced in favor of the scum. Unless I'm reading it wrong, the scum could turn off the cop and vig every single night, right? This game was basically vanilla other than the SK??

Yes, I agree, it was unbalanced. The scum could turn off 2 of the 3 power roles each night. The SK could turn them back on, though, which I guess might have been useful if the SK was desperatly trying to prevent a scum win. Really, the biggest thing the town had going for it was 3 safe claims, and the fact that if they did manage to lynch a scum early it would allow the pro-town roles to be much more active.
