For GAP, however, every second counts. Extinction for the great apes (beyond humans, of course) is a very real possibility and would be so even if they achieved their goal of a UN Declaration tomorrow. Only time and society will tell if the potential costs of pursuing great ape personhood is worth the almost certain costs if we choose not to.
