The Irish playwright and novelist Samuel Beckett is quoted to have said the phrase:

“Every word is like an unnecessary stain on silence and nothingness.”

Now personally I was never able to take much from this other than that Samuel Beckett doesn’t sound much fun at parties. But it does highlight something in how the world sees that there is a purity in passiveness. Moreover, an idea that tolerance is always a virtue and that intolerance is a vice that corrupts the very heart of society.
