QFT. You can't believe how many scum in theme games mess this up 9either by claiming an improbable name or claiming their own name when they don't recognize the pattern of names of scum.Yosarian2 wrote:I basically don't claim no matter if I'm scum or not. But if you have to claim as scum, the key is to get the flavor right.-

In a themed game I was playing in where I wasn't sure about the flavour, looking at Wikipedia proved that my character(Mafia in the game) wasn't actually bad. So I claimed cop(with relevent flavour) who could only determine Mafia. Despite there being another 2 Cops(One of them was a Mason) I still managed to survive to the end of the game.In the name of Mark Lazarus....-

If your play so far has been fairly n00bish and blustery and you are run up(early), you can always claim to be a mason and refuse to speak your partner's name and claim that it is imbedded in your previous posts in a way he can identify and what not.
Usually town will back off a mason claim early without pushing for the partner claim, try to argue strenously against it.
Make sure that you attack very vigorously any attempt to argue against the fact that a mason isn't dead at whatever point.
Try to be blustery and overconfident and mention how you are bloody confirmed innocent every 2 or three sentences. It will make you sound more like a n00b who is trying to pump masonhood for everything he's got.
Consequently no1 will take you seriously and then you can avoid actually pushing against this player or that player.
If the game progresses to a point where you are obviously supposed to claim and there's no way out of it, claim to be the partner of any random person in the game(it doesn't have to be your partner)
Vehemently attack that person if they deny your lies(the key here is to be furious, actually sound upset and stuff)
proceed to post fake chatlogs from AIM and screenshots of PMs(these should be forged prehand and it should be made clear with the moderator if such action would be allowed if you actually were masons)
Stop at nothing to drive the idea that your mason partner is a scumbag who sold you down the river into the heads of your opposition.
Express outrage every 2 or 3 posts.
Start visibly foaming at the teeth and other stuff.
If it doesn't convince them, at least it'd be amusing to watch.Show"I hope one day I can openly play as wolfy as Pooky and get zero pressure for it grumble grumble."

I was waiting on Mini 368 to finish before I posted here... and then, predictably, I forgot about it for a week.
1. Short of a Cop result or me doing something really stupid (whatever my alignment), it is extremely rare that I will claim the first several days of any game (where "several" depends on the size of the game). This isn't so much a metagame ploy to discourage bandwagoning-for-claims as it is a reflection of my belief that early claims are rarely good for the town (except in broken games)... and if enough people believe that, there's no bandwagoning-for-claims anyway.
2. Whether I'm claiming early for one of the above reasons, or later on (because of an endgame massclaim, or just because if I'm a lynch target late in the game I'm less likely to just talk my way out of it while refusing to claim), what I claim as scum depends far too much on the situation... and it's so rare that I actually make it near an endgame as scum without being investigated that it's pointless to worry about too much anyway. In 368 for example, when we claimed it was clear that the game was mostly townies, and so all three of us scum claimed townie (as did the two innocents who hadn't claimed yet).
3. Next time I have to claim, I am going to claim to be Commodore Amazing.
