As probably one of the few asexuals (if not the only asexual) the lot of you are on speaking terms with, I sometimes feel a duty to comment on things like this to both clear the record as regarding how I view sex and also because I feel my opinion can add a unique perspective to the mix. I wouldn't recommend reading this one mobile, it's a long one:

I assume most of you expect me to make some sly remark about sex being ridiculous and nobody should engage in it. And it is and they shouldn't. But that cuts across all ways, and in many ways being a porn star is much more utilitarian and palpable to my code than normal sex. She highlights the exact reason. She needed money, porn offered money. She also offered a secondary reason of artistic fulfillment, which while certainly most of us do not “do” our art that way, I think most of us who engage in any type of art can get the value of that feeling.

You'll always note that in these sort of discussions, nobody ever mentions the man in a derogatory light, and frequently not at all. I think the author identified why. Women are required to play gatekeeper and goaltender for themselves and play a dangerous game where they need to let in enough guys to not be frigid, not enough to be loose, and ALL the guys they let in need to be of some vague “acceptability” to society. Men, on the other hand, really, are effectively good as gold in society's eyes as long as they stop when they are required by law to do so (and let's be honest, society is pretty lax with requiring that sometimes too). Some bad news for you, everyone: You all are sluts and whores to me. It doesn't matter what parts you have. If you want to be sexual, embrace it and we'll get along fine. But to gender “purity” is laughable because you fuckers don't know what sexually purity is.

The “men getting off scotfree” is also present in most anti-porn feminist rhetoric. In fact, it is often explicitly so in their hypotheticals that male porn stars are average guys, living out the actions of a normal guy in the circumstances. The author of this article was perhaps too charitable with her respect for anti-porn feminists. I am not. If you are sexual and engage in your sexuality, you can't be an anti-porn feminist and not be a hypocrite. Sex is sex, whether you do it in your bedroom or a fake bedroom set on a backlot. Engage in it if you must, but don't act like you aren't just doing what porn stars do but for free and with a little less pizzazz. Certainly, porn can be harmful to the workers involved, it can degrade women, it coerce them into having things done to their bodies they might otherwise not want. Good thing nobody was ever hurt by real life sex, or degraded by real life sex, or compelled by desire to be sexually attractive in real life that they do things they otherwise wouldn't do.

TL;DR version: You fuckers need to learn that how you view porn is how I view you guys doing what you do, only I'm right.

I am always hesitant to speak up to any degree in defense of eugenics, due to how loaded the topic is. Nevertheless, I feel Willrich allows sensationalism and the reputation of eugenics, rather than what it actually is, to be his chief representation of the theory. In hindsight, yes, many of the results they were trying to undercut were not related to genetics per say. But at the time, all scientific evidence supported their conclusions and, indeed, we cannot deny that the notion that some socially destructive tendencies correlate to genetics. If other scientific processes were held to the same standard eugenics is (that is, a reading in which past uses of it are judged based on modern science), all of medical history would be written in a pejorative tone in a way it isn't save for eugenics. Despite nobody speaking of it (and despite Willrich wanting to conflate what proponents of these theories did with the theories themselves), we practice positive eugenics AND negative eugenics today. Every person who has lauded a potential partner's health or family history of long life is, at their core, speaking in the language of a eugenicist. Anyone who has shied away from having children due to a feared proclivity of a personal or familial condition being passed on is flirting with negative eugenics (and anyone who has ever done pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is doing negative eugenics explicitly). One can still disagree that eugenics should be used or that it has social value. But to paint it as solely the use of bigots and cranks, I think, is to fail to understand scientific progress and trial and error.
Willrich also seems eager to conflate racism with eugenics, in my opinion unduly, in the negative by expressing shock, almost incredulity, that there was little attempt to use eugenics to attack non-whites, as if this was a deviation from the nature of eugenics rather than a return to its core. Certainly, it cannot be denied that eugenics was used to justify racism and used as a pseudo-scientific justification for crimes and atrocities committed against non-whites. We have a duty to speak about when those misuses have occurred and identify their racial aspects. In that regard, I have no problem with Willrich mentioning the racism of eugenics when eugenics was used in a racist manner. But often, Willrich will throw the word race into a discussion of eugenics that otherwise had nothing to do with race. Willrich writes as if eugenics necessarily is racist, or that all eugenicists were also racists. He certainly doesn't support this assertion in the text, and frankly I can't find evidence that's the case. Some were, absolutely, and some were only eugenicists to act out their racism. But not all, and certainly not the theory itself. In the cited paragraph, however, he writes almost as if the African-American elites are supporting a policy that is intrinsically racist rather than incidentally so. All science is prone to abuse, and just as we don't paint all research with the brush of the worst uses that have been done with it (certainly, nobody speaks of all disease research as if they were all Tuskegee), we can't be so quick as to say eugenics is bad science because bad scientists used it.
