Hit level 15 after playing all day.

I really dig this game. I think I will likely pass on future beta weekends (or play very lightly) so I don't overconsume before release.

- Engineer is a fun class but it also feels a little lonesome sometimes since two of my abilities were just commanding my bots to do stuff.
- PvP is
very fucking fun
, and this is coming from someone who hates PvP usually.
- The zones feel slightly too large... it's just really daunting to enter a new area and see how far you have to go to make progress.
- Questing system can be confusing sometimes and may result in backtracking if you miss a quest or two. Luckily, I never got bored because the world is beautiful.
- Really going to try to hit 17 tonight after Game of Thrones so I can try the first dungeon.

Yeah.

For me, I don't mind paying $15/month if the game is worth it. The fact that they also give me a way to pay for game time with in-game currency seems fine to me... if I spend a lot of time playing, I can play for free. If I don't play a ton, I can pay $15 and not worry about it.

Kcdaspot wrote:that is very much the problem... there is EVERY bit of incentive to raise the price so much on CREDD so much so that subscribing may be the better option period. Theres a chance that the amount needed to purchase credd may rise to an amount that is impossible to get within a month.
In post 46, PJ. wrote:I don't play mmo's so I'm not familiar with how it works in that setting. But doesn't this give too much of an advantage to the first guild that can price set Credd?
no, wrong

There won't be a free market for CREDD. From my understanding, it'll be a separate entity: owners of CREDD will put them up at a certain price. Buyers of CREDD will put a buy order in for "buy first CREDD that costs XXXX or less". That's it, there will be no way to see how much they're costing (I don't think). They haven't explicitly shown that market yet, but that's the general consensus. And if people
aren't buying CREDD
because the economy for it goes batshit through the roof, then naturally the economy will self-correct when nobody is actually selling any?

@kcda: Why is there an incentive FOR CREDD SELLERS to raise the prices in the market to a point where NOBODY WILL BUY CREDD? What you just said made no sense.

It's a self-correcting system. I'm probably planning to just pay $15/month and not worry about CREDD because that's what I've done with every other MMO.

Can you explain to me why it's any more iffy than WoW's model? If you want to pay $15/month, you can pay a subscription like literally every other successful MMO. The C.R.E.D.D. is an option for players who have more time than they have money, and the C.R.E.D.D. market will be self-policing. Like, I cannot fathom why people would have a problem with a niche, optional, tertiary market in the game.

I'll be completely honest - I don't understand why people mistake this game for being classic WoW. When Carbine talks about difficulty and old MMO'ers fantasize about vanilla WoW's difficulty, they're not talking about the same thing. In fact, the only things similar about vanilla WoW and Wildstar is raids requiring 40 people.
But how are they different? Don't get me wrong; WoW was $@%!ing hard, cupcake. Money was a b!tch to come by, mounts were expensive, professions took effort to level, and leveling was long and grindy. However, the challenge was more that there was a grind that was time consuming.

Wildstar is different. Carbine has created a game that is challenging. Mobs actually have unique and powerful telegraphs through Wildstar's telegraph system that, if not dodged or interrupted, will, quote, "Melt your face off." In Beta, the dungeons I've experienced aren't hard because of rotation memorization or number crunching, they're challenging because they have real mechanics. No boss fight is the same in any of the dungeons I've played through - This is a good sign. It shows that Carbine plans to make unique and interesting fights throughout Wildstar's lifespan (which I hope will be a very long time.)

I guess what I'm getting at is that some people are going into this game with the wrong mindset. You won't find yourself checking your ammo pouch on your spellslinger or going to your trainer to rank up skills you've already learned. Instead, I believe you'll find a MMORPG that truly understands what it means to be a challenging experience due to mechanics and designs meant to make you think.

It's visceral. You feel like combat matters. No more alt-tabbing while you cast an infinite round of 1-2-2-3-4-1-2-2-3-4-oh time to blow my defensive cooldown. You can dodge abilities, you can take on ten mobs at once if you're good enough, and the game is
brutal
. No more sissy hand-holding or dumbing down of the game like what has happened with WoW. People are upset that the "intro" dungeons at level 20 are very fucking difficult (I literally wiped ten times on the first boss. I'd compare the difficulty level to Cata Heroic dungeons in WoW... at level 20). Devs went to Twitter and basically said, "Sorry, we're not toning down the difficulty. If it's not your type of game, don't play it."

The devs are committed to their vision of the game and if it's not for everyone, they're fine with that. They expect only about ONE PERCENT of the launch playerbase to actually raid because it'll be too difficult. That's bold. They've told members of the press, "You're right, some content in the game won't be able to be experienced by everyone. If that's not your thing, don't play it."

It's refreshing. The Saturday Morning Cartoon aesthetic lends a lot of endearment to the game, and I have to admit the LAS skill system is perfectly done to keep the game interesting. I have spent an hour toying around with various skills and dropping them in and out of my action bar to see what "feels" right to me, and when I finally found that sweet spot that fit my playstyle, it was pure enjoyment. I even find the lore of the game to be incredibly interesting.

I think people are being too hard on the Dominion. I've played through a good amount of Dominion quests/stories (I'm level 22 on my Mechari Engi right now), and they're not just moustache-twirling villains. I find them to be painted with shades of grey... they want to keep their empire safe and secure to provide education, housing, and shelter to their citizens. Their state religion preaches empathy and honor and justice. And a lot of the big figures within the Dominion are working towards change. Just off the top of my head, there was a quest I did today or yesterday I think in Auroria that has a highborn family killing lowborn plebs for sport just because they're a higher social class. They go kidnap some lowborns to murder them and, well, the Dominion gets
fucking pissed
at what they're doing so you go free the lowborns and slaughter the asshole highborns. The races in the Dominion aren't "evil" either... the Humans were given the divine right to rule by the Eldan, so... they're going to rule! Draken are all about honor and value family bonds above all else (like a more honorable version of the Orcs from WoW). Chua are scientists, plain and simple, and there is no right and wrong, there is only science... sometimes it means getting your hands dirty, but it's all to evolve as a society. Mechari were created by the Eldan to help the Dominion Humans. Like, from this faction's perspective, God literally created them to maintain order and rule & save the galaxy.

The Dominion are certainly more likely to be evil because they reign by tyranny to establish order, but it's not moustache-twirling evil... they do what they do to protect their empire and keep their people safe/happy, and while sometimes that means torturing people, it also sometimes means protect the weak/innocent. (As a counterpoint, the Exile faction essentially engages in terrorism and destroys ancient Eldan temples in order to try and defeat the Dominion. Their chief researcher is a genocidal maniacal mass murderer. etc) The Exiles basically disagree with the Eldan (you know, the ancient, omniscient race that created the Dominion to protect the galaxy?) and said "Fuck you, we want to be hippie tree people" and went off to live in the forest and carry out planned attacks against the Dominion.

I think that's part of the interesting thing about playing the game... the first few missions are pretty red-herring-ish. Dominion: Oh, go ahead and torture these lowborns and let us fry them in a cell because they might be dissenters! Exile: Oh, go save these cute little anthropomorphic vegetables, SQUEEEEEE~! But the more you play through each storyline, the more you realize each faction has a lot of grey to them.

I keep going from hating my engineer to loving it. Like, I did not like it at all up until my most recent action bar change, and now I'm in love. I'm still torn on whether or not to play engineer in the full game... I don't THINK I will, because I basically leveled this one up since I wouldn't be leveling one at launch.

I play a DPS engineer, which basically means a really fun 3-4 abilities to build up volatility and weaken the enemy, then massive dump on the enemy at 100% volatility with my electrocute. It feels pretty satisfying. I hated it when I was trying to just use my robots to play... too boring.

Warrior, from the little I've played, feels REALLY fun to play. You're just this fucking BEAST that can run out and fuck.shit.up. RAWR RAWR RAWR SMASH SMASH, they NAILED the feel of that class.

Spellslinger, I haven't played much... it feels a little wispy, and supposedly right now they're BROKEN at endgame with their damage output. If I made one at launch, it'd probably be for lore reasons.

Medic, I did not like at all but I only played a couple of levels. Medic felt too... I dunno, nonresponsive? Like, the abilities I was using, I didn't feel that good, visceral feedback when I used them that let me know I was kicking ass.

Esper, I loved. Typical mage-type class, stand back, cast abilities from afar, watch them go pop. Supposedly there's a couple of really cool melee Esper builds in the later levels that basically have you playing like a cracked up suicide bomber. That sounds appealing.

Stalker, I have not played yet. I will probably be trying one out here very shortly. Grimm has been playing stalker, though, and it looks pretty badass.

All healers have two different resources: their primary resource, and then "focus", which is basically their healing pool.

I had the same thought as you about Lightreach Mission. I loved the area and the characters and the struggle between the "religious" righteousness and the desire to help out the lower/poor/defenseless.

I haven't really played with tradeskills much... did some cooking and honestly had NO clue what I was doing. They're like massive minigames that I do not even want to think about yet.

When I was leveling Esper, I think my build was something like:
- Haunt (for debuff)
- Bolster (self-heal over time) & Concentrated Blade (wind up nuke) to build Psi Points OFF the global cooldown
- Telekinetic Strike for filler
- TK Storm to dump Psi Points

Then obviously put your CC/utility spells on the end (the AoE knockback, I forget the name... and the Phantasm Armor)

It lets you mow through mobs and build Psi points like surprisingly fast

what fucking class am i going to play

Esper
: I've always enjoyed mages in games and Esper is about as magey as it gets. I like that aspect of it but I also don't know how much enjoyment I'd get out of the whole "build build build finisher" system. Possibility.

Engineer
: Okay, I leveled this asshole all the way up to 25-30 because I knew I wouldn't play Engi in the main game. Now that I've experienced it though all I want to do is play Engi but I don't want to level one all over again D:

Warrior
: Very fun class but I've never done well with melee roles simply because I tend to lose track of my character in the "Ooooh, shiny!" aspect of it all.

Stalker
: Haven't played, but see Warrior.

Medic
: I apparently need to give Medic another shot because it's apparently very awesome but my limited experience with it left me feeling rather "meh". I did not like the "weak" feedback/feel of the primary weapon (oooh, I'm going to scan you! Watch out!)

Spellslinger
: I personally cannot STAND the SS resource management and the fact that their innate ability is a heavy, key part of their rotation/cooldowns. I think I'll pass on this one for now.

So right now I think I'm leaning Esper > Engineer = Medic > Warrior > Stalker > Spellslinger.

Basically my thoughts on everyone. I was leaning towards Esper.

Also, it looks like from that Strawpoll, Dominion is the preferred faction, so I'll be rolling Dominion. Trying to decide between a PvP and PvE server... I've never been huge on PvP in MMOs but Gamma seemed to want to do it and I don't care enough to say no, lol

I'll probably have two main toons... one to level in my free time, one to level with Grimm when he's home and we're playing together. Will likely depend on what he chooses but I'm thinking I'll probably wind up with two of {Esper, Engineer, Medic}.

I just wanna have enough variety so that if five scummers wanna run a dungeon we're not like 3 espers, 2 medics, and no tanks. I'll gladly fill in whatever we need though I prefer not to tank since I'm shiiiiiiit at it (though ranged Engi tank looks cool).

Espers
are well-rounded but don't particularly excel at any part of the healer role. Their heals are easy to target and hit 5-10 people with at a time, but they're outclassed in heal strength and sustainability by both other healing classes. They're the all-around AFK healbot class in WildStar.

Medics
are essentially melee healers. Weird, right? But the range on their healing abilities is SHOCKINGLY low, resulting in even the slightest movement error from an ally being their death. On a positive note, though, those short AoE heals the medic can dish out are insanely powerful, each tick restoring a good amount of HP. Medics are perfect for raid healing and keeping the group high during sustained damage periods. Their dispels are insane (the Assault one purges 2 debuffs from 5 enemies in a cone and is only on an 8sec cooldown; Antidote, after putting tier points into it, is effectively a FREE [read: no cost] mass dispel for up to 5 allies that can remove 4 debuffs). Medics can give interrupt armor to up to five teammates every twenty seconds, which is the lowest cooldown IA buff by far. Play these guys if you want a challenge but a big reward.

Spellslingers
are basically long range sniper healers. A bit odd, sure, but the reward for landing your pin-like narrow heals is that they heal for a SHITLOAD. These are your burst healers who make clutch plays by saving a tank from death from all the way across the room right before that last poison tick goes off. Focus is easy to keep up since SS abilities restore way more focus than Medics/Espers do, and their abilities are all on a rather short cooldown, which means you can spam your healsnipes while never running out of focus.

I actually think medics are the strongest class for raiding/dungeons, but also take the highest skill. Sustained healing is a very important (and probably the most important) aspect to healing in groups, more so than burst heals or crowd control (and, to be honest, all classes HAVE cc which is the only thing that matters). The only real downside to medics is that you have to be good at the role to do well, but I believe a great Medic will be more effective than a great Esper or SS.

Basically yeah I could see a case for SS taking highest skill with the aiming but they're so long range they can set up away from the danger to do it. I think the positioning on the medic may be a tad more difficult but they're both hard

Engineers
are the heavy armor tank & spank class. Think of a Paladin in WoW -- they're big fucking meat shields with body armor on. They have an intimidate on a very short cooldown (compared to the other two classes that have taunts on very short cooldowns) which means higher threat generation than the other classes. They're great at holding aggro on group mobs, but their usefulness ends at holding aggro and soaking damage. They offer no utility to the group and need a healer to be on their ass 24/7.

Stalkers
are the deflect tanks. They're wearing medium armor, so they're at a natural disadvantage to the Warrior & Engineer... but, with a high focus on deflect rating and tons of mobility, Stalkers may very well need to be healed less than the other two tanks! They're agile and avoid hits altogether and also have some built in life steal to keep their HP up. They're pretty average at most things, although they DO suck at maintaining groups of mobs since they have virtually no AoE.

Warriors
are damage mitigation masters. They have plenty of superpowered defensive cooldowns to turn them into impenetrable brick walls and can eat huge damage spikes for breakfast. Not to mention, their Defensive Grid & Plasma Wall cooldowns provide massive 21-30% damage mitigation for the group as well! They've also got a whole suite of debuffs they can put on the target, like Smackdown, to help their group burn through the content faster. They're lean, mean, damage-soaking machines and having one in your raid group will mean more living DPSers and faster kills.

Also they're
slowly
raising the caps on all servers as the launch goes on. They'll undoubtedly allow more people in tomorrow after the official launch, and once you create a character on a server you get priority queue access on that server

Okay, a couple things:

#1) The "smacking five things" feeling you get from Warrior applies to most classes. All classes have telegraphs that hit multiple enemies, allowing big pulls. Warrior's big thing is that they have back-loaded damage as a DPS class, meaning they need to build up for a bit before they just wreck shit. It doesn't make a huge difference in group content and later leveling content, but in the first 10-15 levels, it'll be a bit rough because classes with heavy front-loaded damage like Stalkers or Medics can just one-shot things in no time.

#2) That kind of design philosophy continues throughout the questing areas. The layout of the areas tells a story in itself, and the lore takes a huge front seat during questing, but it's never intrusive. Quest boxes are only one line of dialogue so you can get the gist without needing to read a novel. If you want to read more, you can optionally click the other dialogue options to find out a little more about the world.

#3) Fuck Chua. Fucking hamster rats. Although, if Chua could be warriors, you can bet your ass that's what I'd have rolled.

#4) 9-11 FPS really isn't awful. Keep this in mind: the game is
still
not optimized. People with multi thousand dollar rigs are regularly capping out at 40 FPS, when realistically they should be running up around 70-100. Hell, my PC is a little bit old (3 years), but it can run most games just fine... but the game isn't optmized, so WildStar is capping at like 29FPS in rare moments. Most of the time I'm sitting around 20 FPS at most. New computer probably won't help until the game is optimized.

The last part of Far side is completely low gravity and it's amazing

This whole zone legitimately might be the best zone in any MMO ever. The World Pillar underground zone in WoW is probably second.

The first two dungeons are just perfect. Forgemaster Trogun is like the most impressive boss fight I've seen in a dungeon or raid, ever. That was just nuts.

I was a little disappointed in Skullcano, though. The fact that you can't access it until level 35 when you're already way done with Whitevale makes you feel rather disconnected from the lore/storyline. The first boss is a cute idea but in practice we just ignored the mechanics and burst him down through his self-healing bullshit. The second boss is REALLY fun for the tank, and there's a cool little double jump mechanic involved, but overall DPS and heals don't get anything cool while the tank gets to engage with the mechanics. The third boss is actually really great and I loved everything about the fight, it was super challenging. The final boss felt more like an obstacle course/challenge than a boss, since the main mechanic is basically "spinny fire telegraphs that make you run in a circle".

I'm probably just being picky, because I still think these dungeons are better than anything offered by any other MMO.

Surprisingly, the Adventures are what I've absolutely loved. Other than the first one, Riot in the Void, which is basically a vanilla five person questline, every other one has been so unique and different that I've had a blast with each one.

oh my god

phage labs, the last questing area at lvl 49... it's the worst. i mean it's cool but the closest rez station is MILES away and even once you get in the phage labs you have to go through floor after floor after floor to get back to where you were

It fucking has to be the AMD processors then. Because I have an AMD video card and can't even remotely get 70fps on LOW let alone ultra. Even though my CPU is 3.2GHz (AMD Phenom II x4 BE).

I'm still subbed. Haven't played in a bit, will probably pick it back up very shortly here as they're doing free server transfers leading up to megaservers. We're moving next week, I've put off picking it up again until after the move is done.

Huh. I actually created a bunch of alts because I loved the leveling system. The endgame attunement grind was a chore without a good group of people to run with... our guild merged with another one because supposedly they had a bunch of Vet Dungeon groups that we could join, then basically they didn't create any and I got burned and said fuck it. They're changing the attunement though, and I think the megaservers will help with guilds/groups to make attunement easier, because goddamn did I love the mechanics and encounters in the game.

It's hard as shit to pug ANY content in this game. People were spoiled by WoW being able to afk tank or just hit rotations, this actually requires skill. When you PUG, you're not going "Okay, I'll just hop in real quick and run a dungeon"... you're going, "I've got a couple hours to kill and I want to down this thing."

In post 170, Oman wrote:I stopped because levelling was a grind and tanking wasn't fun. Because level 30 pugs, ya know.

Also, what class were you tanking with? Because I think I had a Warrior tank that I was leveling and I thought it was a bunch of fun once you unlocked some of the skills.

Yeah, I loved the game and until yesterday I was still subbed. But with Frost and Cougar and a bunch of the devs leaving, and with the megaservers merge being handled poorly, and with them immediately dropping the "every month new content" promise, and with the optimization for AMD systems still being utter shit... I have to give up. It's sad, because the game design was FANTASTIC! And I was so hyped about this game, I stayed awake until 4AM for the head launch and played my heart out, leveled two characters to max level... but it was so poorly handled from an operations and organizational standpoint that it's going to die. And it sucks. Because it truly was a great game.

I didn't mind the big zones, as it's essentially the same thing as having small zones with travel time between each one. Overall, the time it took to level all the way is less than in other MMOs. And different areas in each zone felt completely different with different themes. I really enjoyed the leveling process, actually, but it did feel like just a moving hallway, almost, towards the ultimate destination: dungeons.

The dungeons were fucking PERFECT. I have never had that much fun strategizing and failing at dungeons in an MMO. Even complete wipes were fun because the telegraph system provided interesting new mechanics that I had never seen before in an MMO. I don't think quest upgrades SHOULD feel like a big power spike, but those dungeon items? Hell yes did they make you feel awesome. I loved all the cosmetic items and upgrades, I loved the content releases, I loved the passion the dev team seemed to have... but they had a terrible QA process that lead to way too many bugs being pushed to live. (And don't even get me started on optimization.)

Ironically, their biggest problem is that they delivered on their seemingly impossible promise: making a hardcore game for hardcore players. Even people like me, who love MMOs and would consider myself a pretty hardcore (or at least non-casual) player... the attunement process at endgame just took way too long and was way too hard unless you had a damn good guild, and even then, with my guild, we had trouble clearing the first veteran dungeon with a bronze medal, let alone silver. They're getting rid of the silver medal requirement now and fixing some of the unwieldy-ness of the attunement process at endgame, but it's too little, too late. They've lost a lot of their core devs, and while megaservers and content tweaks might fix most of the issues, it's too late for a lot of people.

Maybe if they manage to stabilize I'll check it out again in a year and see how it's doing.

I don't know what gaps we have. I'm leveling an Esper mainly for healing. I have a max level Engineer. I would wager we really need a tank of some kind because BBM is playing DPS.

Not sure what kind of issues you're having... but if you were only up to level 11, you haven't really hit the main difficulty curve. But it also may be that you're outleveling the content. If you're doing all the tasks then you're going to outlevel content pretty quickly. I don't even do the tasks -- I just do zone/story/region quests and try to make sure I'm doing quests that are 1-3 levels ahead of where I am.

I had similar complaints re: telegraph system while questing, but it certainly becomes more difficult with the lvl 15 zone and increases after that. Also, the telegraph system comes into heavy play during dungeons & group content.
