Pairings on day one

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Apr 26, 2007 7:04 am

This question applies mostly to newbie games or at least 7 player setups. Is it worth looking for scum pairings on day 1? I've seen several people do it, if there's a link worth pursuing, yet some people seem to avoid doing it like the plague, insisting that it shouldn't be done until there are two dead people. I am interested to know people's opinions on this.

I generally am looking for connections even as early as D1. I especially look for connections when I start to suspect anybody, as I want to see if I can find their scumbuddies at this stage in the game.

I don't think it's the main strategy you should use when scumhunting D1, but I certainly don't see it as being taboo.

It's not a very good scumhunting strategy
on
D1, but it does get your thoughts out there for later. As a pro-town player, any insights you have that can be utilized later even if you get killed are valuable to the town, and if you
are
alive, it gives you credibility (or not!) for being consistent in what you've seen and said...

When I'm making notes, I generally include who players random vote, who they defend, who's names they seem to avoid mentioning. This is not information that I am going to use to help me determine the proper play on d1, but is instead info that I will be looking at on d2 or three for more conrete connections.

What Flay said. Any thought is useful as a protown player, and any thought should be made public.

(shrug) It's not that likely you'll actually find scum that way on day 1, but on day 1 (and for that matter, for much of the game) pretty much any insight, attack, thought, or insinuation that might stir the waters, cause trouble, get reactions and move the game is probably a good thing, so long as it's not based on complete crap logic. So, sure, why not.

It's possible. Once on another forum I was scum. One of the 2 others was executed the first day, based on posting style.

I find that scum relations are easiest to pick out based on their interactions on Day 1. That said, it tends to be easier to sort through that information on later days.

I
always
think that looking for ties between players is the optimal way to play. I think it is especially important with more experienced players, because I think the hardest thing isn't "not acting like scum", it's "not acting differently towards people you know to be scum".

Nothing wrong with looking for pairings on day one, but if two people work together, it doesn't necessarily give them a higher chance of being scum. You should start using pairings in your reasoning when it's related to at least one dead scum.

I agree with TSQ... and if anything, I'm paying the MOST attention on Day 1. The scum usually haven't settled into a comfortable strategy by then and there's a lot to be found.

Personally I think there are a couple Day 1 scumtells that are ~80% accurate, even though most people know about them.

I don't really looks for pairings at any point. I find it a distraction, and pretty much the start of the time where you begin to become too paranoid. That's just me though, and I can see why others do it. About the only thing I do is rethink if I have the scum down to a two that doesn't make sense.

Yeah, I mostly agree with Pod. It's something to note, but it shouldn't be your only discussion that day. It's usually better to wait til you have confirmed day 2 connections. Until then, you're only speculating on flimsy guesswork (instead of slightly more informed guessword)

Heh...although one of the most fun parts for me about being a townie on day 1 is the freedom to speculate on the most flimsy evidence or the most minor scum tell without feeling like you have to analyze the entire game first.

Well when I say slightly more informed, I mean just as flimsy but in a different and better way. <.<;;;
