This Game is the Worst-Case Scenario [Q.166]

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Thu Sep 11, 2014 8:19 pm

Post by diginova »

I'm feeling particularly evil today, so let's run something special. Let's play a game
outside
the top 10,000 on BGG.
You will not survive with your sanity intact. You will be warned.

WARNING

When a life is imperiled or a dire situation is at hand, safe alternatives may not exist. To deal with the worse-case scenarios presented in this game, we highly recommend—insist, actually—that the best course of action is to consult a professionally trained expert. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNDERTAKE ANY OF THE ACTIVITIES DESCRIBED IN THIS GAME YOURSELF. But because highly trained professionals may not always be available when the safety of individuals is at risk, we have asked experts and conducted research on various subjects to determine the techniques that PUBLISHER, [MOD,] AUTHORS AND EXPERTS DISCLAIM ALL LIABILITY from any injury that may result from the use, proper or improper, of the information contained in this game. All the information in this game comes from experts and reference sources at hand, but we do not guarantee that the information contained herein is complete, safe or accurate, nor should it be considered a substitute for your good judgement and common sense. And finally, nothing in this game should be construed or interpreted to infringe on the rights of other persons or to violate criminal statutes: we urge you to obey all laws and respect all rights, including property rights, of others.

Yes, that paragraph, missing sentence and all, is on the front cover of the rulebook.
No, it doesn't matter, because none of the scenarios will help you survive anything, and a good number of them aren't even scenarios that anyone would consider worst-case.

How does this work?

You post in-thread that you want a question.
I pull a random question card and give it to you.
The question has three possible answers.
You try to choose the one that the game says is the best*.
If you're correct, you get a point. If you're wrong, you don't get a point.

I have the game, but I haven't played in several years; there's only one answer I remember (which is what to do in case you meet an alien. Glad that's the only thing I learned from this game).

I may switch to a slightly more board-game style format, but it won't be as boring as it is in real life. I'd run it as more of a quiz show.

So I think the way this game was created is they took a snippet at random from the book and put it onto a card.
They then had their unpaid intern write the other two choices with no other information and no fact checking.

Processing answers now.

So let's try this. These 10 questions are posed to everyone; answer any or all of them.
Post your answers in the thread; you can PM if you want to keep your answers a secret, but it doesn't matter much with these questions.
The next set of questions will be posted in (expired on 2014-09-20 05:24:02), or 6 hours after I get 60%, or 14, answers.

Text in italics is flavor text. I write it before looking at the choices for the question that's coming up, so do not use any text that appears there to help determine the answer. There is only one correct answer to each question, but I know that answer about as much as you do. Good luck everyone!

So let's start out with one of the worst-case scenarios out there. It seems like it would serve you better to watch out for Save the Dragons with lemonade and a potato, but you may also need to know...

137
HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAR FROM BEING STOLEN FROM A PARKING LOT

A
Take your exit ticket with you when you leave the car.
B
Always park on the first floor, near the attendant.
C
Park next to a wall or structure. Pull the car all the way into the spot and turn your wheels tightly against the wall.

Assuming your car's still there, you need to determine what to do when your brake lines are cut, because that happens all the time. Your first option is to bail, and if you do, it will be good to know...

138
HOW TO JUMP FROM A MOVING CAR

A
Tuck-in your arms and legs, jump at an angle, then roll when you hit the ground.
B
Jump in the opposite direction that the car is moving, then roll like a log with your arms and legs straight.
C
Climb to the window and push off the steering wheel with your foot, steering the car away from you.

Say jumping doesn't work... you may have one of those newfangled flying cars or you may be kidnapped and they've locked you in. Your only option then is to prepare for what will eventually happen...

139
HOW TO ASSUME THE IMPACT POSITION WHEN IN A CAR

A
Cover your eyes with one hand and the back of your neck with the other. Extend your legs and take deep breaths.
B
Drop your chin to your chest and put your hands behind your head. Tuck you elbows together and pull your feet underneath you.
C
Try to completely relax any muscles in your body.

So you've decided not to drive any more, so you take the bus down to the train station and buy a ticket. Too bad for you that someone's parked across the tracks further down, so you'll hopefully be able to determine...

140
HOW TO REACT WHEN A TRAIN SUDDENLY BRAKES

A
Throw yourself on the floor and rest your chin on your chest.
B
If you are standing, sit on another passenger; if you are sitting, pull another passenger onto you.
C
Immediately run to the closest exit and jump off the train.

Assuming nothing bad can happen, you go and get dinner. Amazingly, there's no shellfish or turtles, so you don't need to know how to source or cook them and your dinner goes off without a hitch. When you get home though, you should be sure you're aware...

141
HOW TO PREVENT NIGHTTIME LEG CRAMPS

A
Eat a banana before bed and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
B
Drink a cup of warm milk before bed.
C
Take an over-the-counter diuretic to reduce the potassium in the system.

You wake up and find an itchy, red dome on your skin, with a large pore at the top, accompanied by a crawling feeling. Save the Dragons should be able to tell you that with those symptoms it would be good to know...

142
HOW TO TREAT A FLY LARVAE SKIN INFESTATION

A
Cover the larva's breathing hole with bacon fat or chewing gum.
B
Submerge the infested area in hot water.
C
Leave infected area alone; the larvae will come out on their own.

Later, after you've solved your fly larvae problem (eww), it turns out that that meal you ate wasn't so great after all, as the pork you ate may not have been thoroughly cooked and you're starting to get some symptoms...

143
HOW TO RECOGNIZE TRICHINOSIS

A
Within two weeks of ingesting infected meat, symptoms include high fever, muscle aches, swelling around the eyes, and joint pain.
B
Within 48 hours of ingesting infected meat, symptoms include sore throat, headache, delirium and frequent nosebleeds.
C
Within a few hours after ingesting infected meat, symptoms include swelling of the feet, ringing in the ears, and flushed skin.

You get a call from your friends Mitillos and phokdapolees, who seem to be having the same issues you are with bad luck and are stuck in the desert. Mitillos is having a better time at it, but phokdapolees is having a bit of trouble, so you drive out and save them. It's good that you learned...

144
HOW TO DRIVE ON DESERT SAND

A
Deflate the tires a little bit and don't change gears once you start driving.
B
Do not exceed 15 mph and apply the brakes only when absolutely necessary.
C
Turn on the heater and headlights, and turn the wheel as little as possible.

sthar8 joins you on your way back to civilization, but you notice he's not feeling too well himself. Hopefully someone else told him the correct quarantine procedures, otherwise I hope that at least one of you knows...

145
HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE BUBONIC PLAGUE

A
Symptoms include fever, chills, severe fatigue, vomiting and enlarged and tender lymph nodes.
B
Symptoms include persistent coughing and wheezing, inability to sleep, and bloody urine.
C
Symptoms include swelling of the tongue, dry mouth, and an unbearable throbbing in the throat and neck, followed by the inability to hold up one's head.

As you finally reach a forest, you're starving as you decided that not bringing any water into the desert was an intelligent idea. DarkLightA seems really insistent on how good tree bark tastes, but you're fine with letting him eat as much as he wants. You'd much prefer finding out...

146
HOW TO GET FOOD FROM A PINE TREE

A
Roast closed pinecones over a fire to open them, then when they open, take out the pine nuts and eat them.
B
Shave the bark off the tree and mash it into a paste, then bake or fry the paste.

It seems like the parking ticket is all-powerful and will prevent your car from being stolen. That must suck for those people who lose their tickets, their car being trapped in the garage forever.

So it seems that jumping off a train and a car are very similar... who would have guessed?

I don't know how to pull your feet underneath you when you're seated in a car, but the rest of the advice is sound.

You may slide around a bit, but at least you're in a controlled fall when you drop down instead of one caused by sudden deceleration.

I'm not sure about the medical benefits of warm milk, but being properly hydrated and having potassium in your system is supposedly a good way to prevent cramps.

141
HOW TO PREVENT NIGHTTIME LEG CRAMPS

A
Eat a banana before bed and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
B
Drink a cup of warm milk before bed.
C
Take an over-the-counter diuretic to reduce the potassium in the system.

Eww. Eww. NOPE. Then you only have dead fly larvae in your skin instead of live ones... I guess that's a benefit? Also, I originally read that as hot bacon fat, which is a very different way of solving that issue... much more painful.

142
HOW TO TREAT A FLY LARVAE SKIN INFESTATION

A
Cover the larva's breathing hole with bacon fat or chewing gum.
B
Submerge the infested area in hot water.
C
Leave infected area alone; the larvae will come out on their own.

Yeah, flavor error there... Trichinosis worms take a while to reveal their presence, but then they take up residence in your muscles, causing aches, pain and swelling.

Lower tire pressure increases friction, but also increases the surface area of the wheels allowing more traction. Luckily none of you thought blasting the heater in the desert was a good idea.

You seem to have somehow time traveled to 1340s Europe, as there haven't been too many plague outbreaks in the last 50 years; it hasn't been considered a pandemic since 1959.

Pine nuts roasting on an open fire... The issue is pine nuts are a lot of work. You have to shell the nuts, and the size of them greatly depends on species of tree and time of year. The bark is also edible, but you just have to shave off the inner bark, and then either boil or fry it. No need to make a paste.

146
HOW TO GET FOOD FROM A PINE TREE

A
Roast closed pinecones over a fire to open them, then when they open, take out the pine nuts and eat them.
B
Shave the bark off the tree and mash it into a paste, then bake or fry the paste.
C
The whole pinecone can be eaten raw or cooked.

These 10 questions are posed to everyone; answer any or all of them.
Post your answers in the thread; you can PM if you want to keep your answers a secret, but it doesn't matter much with these questions.
The next set of questions will be posted in (expired on 2014-10-21 06:51:34). (For real this time.)

Text in italics is flavor text. I write it before looking at the choices for the question that's coming up, so do not use any text that appears there to help determine the answer. There is only one correct answer to each question, but I know that answer about as much as you do. Good luck everyone!
With apologies to Xalxe.

Xalxe never knew that quitting his job as Mish Mash Janitor, though a good idea in and of itself, would cause through some combination of quantum mechanics and butterflies a series of events that can only be described as...
Worst-Case Scenarios.
Or not. With this game you can never tell.

It all started with the freak blizzard in the middle of October, that forced him to remember...

147
HOW TO DEFROST A FROZEN CAR LOCK

A
Light a match and use it to heat the key; the heated key should defrost the lock.
B
Place your mouth over the lock, and breathe into it to melt the ice.
C
Throw hot water into the lock, then quickly insert the key.

As he was the moderator of an Internet forum, he was used to receiving death threats from members that were unhappy with him (hopefully not!). That's why he learned by heart...

148
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR CAR HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH

A
When you park at night, spread sand around the car so you can check for suspicious footprints.
B
Dust the entire car with baby powder inside and out.
C
Put matching colored clay on the floor mats of the car.

Safe that he was secure and that there was no lemonade, potato, and Save the Dragons nearby, he decided to go on a cruise as part of a well-deserved rest. Things went amazingly smoothly for the first couple days, until the ship hit an iceberg in the middle of the Caribbean and started to sink. Hopefully someone on board knew...

149
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A LIFEBOAT RESCUE

A
Send the sick or injured aboard the rescue craft first; supporting them as much as possible as they are pulled to safety.
B
The fittest survivor should board the rescue craft first, securing a line under the armpits and between the legs.
C
The heaviest survivor should board the rescue craft first while the crew is fresh.

After five days at sea, everyone else had been voted overboard one by one in a real-life game of Mafia, and only Xalxe (the Godfather of course) remained. Land was nowhere in site though, so he thought up ideas on...

150
HOW TO SLOW DEHYDRATION

A
As your water supply dwindles, wean yourself from water by decreasing your ration amount.
B
Substitute urine or sweat for water.
C
Do not eat.

Land! Glorious land! There was an island in the distance, but sadly a sand bar prevented him from bringing the boat all the way to shore. He decided to swim, but did he know...

151
HOW TO SWIM IN THE OCEAN SAFELY

A
Only swim alone during the day in moderate to calm to moderate* sea conditions.
B
Try swimming in waste** deep water to check the currents and water/whether*** conditions before heading out over your head.
C
Stay away from patches of plants, pilings and diving platforms when swimming.
*Yes, that's as it's written on the card. Roll with it. Total typos: 5
**Twice on the same card! Yes, they got mixed up on waste and waist. They really put no effort into this game. Total typos: 6
***Holy crap, THREE TIMES on the same card! Hint: it's weather, not whether. Lrn2spl. Total typos: 7

He made it to shore, but as it started to get dark he started to miss everyone on MafiaScum, even the members of F62. He stayed up all night worrying, but he wouldn't have had to if he had known...

152
HOW TO FALL ASLEEP IN UNFAMILIAR PLACES

A
Eat foods high in tryptophan, such as turkey, figs and nut butters before bed.
B
Eat foods high in tyramine, including potatoes, sauerkraut, or sausages, before bed.
C
Increase the temperature in the room by 10°F of what it usually is when you sleep.

The next day, he wandered into the mountains to try finding fresh water or food so he could start surviving and hopefully getting back to civilization. Too bad he wandered too close to a den, so he had to quickly decide...

153
HOW TO ESCAPE FROM A MOUNTAIN LION

A
Crouch down and stay very still.
B
Stand still, holding your coat open.

Luckily for him, a wild Toto decided to scare away the cowardly (mountain) lion for him, but after, the dog turned its attention to him! If only he had known...

154
HOW TO RESPOND TO A DOG ATTACK

A
Try to run away, climb a tree, or jump onto a high surface.
B
Scream for help, but do not fight back.
C
Try and put something between you and the dog, such as a stick or a coat.

He took the mountain lion carcass back to camp, and carved up the meat so he wouldn't starve. He also decided to not let any part of the animal go to waste, so he looked in his survival manual and looked up...

155
HOW TO CURE FURS

A
Stretch the skin as tightly as possible, and leave it in the sun to dry, ensuring it does not get wet.
B
Stretch the skin as tightly as possible, then repeat the process of soaking it in water and drying it until the fur has a sheen when dry.
C
After thoroughly cleaning the skin, roll it, fur side in, into a tight roll. Cover it with clay, and bury it in hot coals for two hours.

As the furs were curing, he saw something that made his blood freeze. A poor, defenseless little bird was lying there with what looked like a sprained wing. Luckily, he knew this one! He was 100% sure...

156
HOW TO AID AN INJURED BIRD

A
Move the bird to a high place in a tree. Give it water, and call a veterinarian.
B
Carefully place the bird in a box or bag punched with holes, and call a veterinarian.
C
Immobilize the bird by placing it in a confined, ventilated space, so it will not cause itself further injury. Call a veterinarian.

After the local veterinarian on the deserted island nursed the bird back to health, strangely it flew onto Xalxe's shoulder and whispered into his ear, "You've been able to get back all along. Just click your heels together three times, and say "There's no place like MafiaScum!" and you'll find yourself back home." Xalxe thanked the bird, and did what he said...

...And woke up back at home. Turns out it was all just a dream. What a gyp.

I have no excuses for some of these. These answers are outright terrible. Sorry Xalxe, looks like you won't be able to help that injured bird at all.

At least none of the answers here were "lick the lock", or you'd have to call a locksmith *and* a medic.

When I originally read this question before reading the possible answers, I was thinking it would give something feasible. Not carrying around a 50-lb bag of sand with you wherever you park, only to constantly be paranoid because drunks wandered in the street.

So it turns out "Women and children first" was the wrong answer. No wonder there were so few survivors of the Titanic.

This question. So the best way to stop dehydration is to induce starvation. So instead of being thirsty and miserable, you're now thirsty,
hungry
and miserable.

150
HOW TO SLOW DEHYDRATION

A
As your water supply dwindles, wean yourself from water by decreasing your ration amount.
B
Substitute urine or sweat for water.
C
Do not eat.

I think the "correct answer" here is correct in lakes as well, but it answers "how to swim at a beach" safely more than anything useful.

151
HOW TO SWIM IN THE OCEAN SAFELY

A
Only swim alone during the day in moderate to calm to moderate sea conditions.
B
Try swimming in waste deep water to check the currents and water/whether conditions before heading out over your head.
C
Stay away from patches of plants, pilings and diving platforms when swimming.

Oddly enough, the truism of "never eat anything in Worst-Case Scenarios" remains true even when just trying to sleep.

Yes, you've seen pretty much this exact question before. This won't be the last time as well.

153
HOW TO ESCAPE FROM A MOUNTAIN LION

A
Crouch down and stay very still.
B
Stand still, holding your coat open.
C
Start hissing and spitting at the lion until he retreats.

154
HOW TO RESPOND TO A DOG ATTACK

A
Try to run away, climb a tree, or jump onto a high surface.
B
Scream for help, but do not fight back.
C
Try and put something between you and the dog, such as a stick or a coat.

I think this one is just dead wrong. Baked furs seems like the world's worst dessert recipe though.

I think the difference between B and C is in B in the bird will have a chance to fly around, injuring itself further. Wait -- B's "correct"? This game ._.
Also, I reiterate sthar's statement of "never help injured birds".

These 10 questions are posed to everyone; answer any or all of them.

The next set of questions will be posted in (expired on 2014-10-28 03:05:22).

With apologies to Xalxe.

Cheery Dog decided to celebrate his birthday by taking a drive through the forest and admiring the scenery. Little did he know that what happened for the rest of his day would best be be described as...
Worst-Case Scenarios.
Or not. With this game you can never tell.

The fall colors of brown and orange were all around him, and he slowed down to admire the beauty... the falling leaves, the changing colors, the crackling flames...
Flames? It seems he was in California, so hopefully he knew...

157
HOW TO SURVIVE A FOREST FIRE WHILE IN A VEHICLE

A
Stay in the vehicle until the fire burns past you.
B
Leave the vehicle immediately if the tank contains any gas.
C
Drive toward the fire to reach the safety of burned-out ground.

It turns out the fire moved faster than he expected, and soon his car was also engulfed. He would have had a bad day if didn't know...

158
HOW TO REACT TO A CAR FIRE

A
Stop the car, and run away from it. Warn on-coming traffic by waving your hands. Do not attempt to put out the fire.
B
Stop the car, and open the hood. Wrap a blanket or coat over the fire to smother it, and run away from the car.
C
Stop the car, and open the hood. Remove the wiper fluid container, and use the liquid to extinguish the fire.

He managed to get away from the burned-out husk of his car thanks to his trusty backpack and hiking boots, but soon his good luck turned for the worse as he got a spasm in his leg. Did he remember...

159
HOW TO TREAT A CHARLEY HORSE WHILE HIKING IN THE WILD

A
Apply a heating pad to the cramp until the muscles soften.
B
Standing on the "good" leg, grasp the other ankle from behind, and slowly pull it upwards to stretch it out.
C
Lying flat with arms at your sides, roll on the ground to diminish the knot slowly and evenly.

While treating his charley horse (and lamb chop) he tripped and falls over, and landed right on his tailbone. The searing pain meant bad things were happening, and he needed to quickly learn...

160
HOW TO TREAT A PELVIC FRACTURE IN THE WILDERNESS

A
Lay the victim on a hard stiff surface and elevate the legs. A helicopter evacuation is always necessary.
B
Place padding between the legs and gently tie them together. Treat the victim for shock and lay him/her on a well padded, but firm, surface for evacuation.
C
Wrap a bandage tightly around the hipbones to pull the pelvic bone into place. Create crutches for evacuation if the victim cannot walk.

Even after treating the fracture, it turns out the pain didn't go away, so in his infinite wisdom he surmised that something else must have been wrong. He quickly found out that he would also require information on...

161
HOW TO RELIEVE HEMORRHOIDS IN THE WILD

A
Soak the affected area in clean, cold water three times a day.
B
Apply a poultice made of mud and earthworms to the affected area.
C
Apply a concoction of elm bark two to three times a day.

After treating the issues with his excretory system, he decided to relieve himself in the bushes only to be floored by terrible pain. He thought nothing else could go wrong, but of course he was mistaken and would need to know...

162
HOW TO TREAT KIDNEY STONES

A
Lie very still, avoid liquids as much as possible ,and take aspirin for pain relief.
B
Take the strongest pain medication you have available and drink copious amounts of fluid.
C
Drink only sugar water, at the rate of approximately eight ounces per hour, to maintain a continued liquid flow.

The constant pain and agony he was in almost caused him to pop a vessel in his brain and have an aneurysm. Luckily that didn't happen, but what did was a constant pounding. He could recognize the symptoms, but did he know...

163
HOW TO CURE A HEADACHE IN THE WILD

A
Eat a concoction made from willow leaves and bark.
B
Lying flat on your back, place a smooth, cool stone against each temple.
C
Eat raw grasshoppers; they contain Salicin, which is a substitute for aspirin.

The pain stopped! The pain stopped! Oh glorious day! Now he had to create a shelter, as being a mile from civilization was too far to risk walking. Luckily, he find's a logger's log cabin, with a fully gassed-up chainsaw inside! The perfect tool to create a log cabin! Now if only he knew...

164
HOW TO START A CHAINSAW

A
Hold the chainsaw out and away with one hand while cranking it with the other.
B
Hold the chainsaw saw down with a hand and foot while cranking it to a start.
C
Leave the chainsaw on the ground and braced behind a rock as you crank it to a start.

Luck's on his side! He faintly heard the instructions for starting the chainsaw as if someone was trying to give him advice. Oh wait, somebody was! He saw the logger in the corner of the cabin, barely conscious after having a heart attack. He was going to do open-heart surgery, but sadly didn't have a scalpel and thus had to rely on...

165
HOW TO GIVE A HEART MASSAGE

A
Place your hands on the chest, and pump the heart.
B
Place your firsts under and to the right of the left nipple. With your arms straight, squat down and lean forward, pushing your weight on each fist.
C
Cross the victim's arms, and position your palms between their nipples. Lean forward and backward, using your body weight to pump the heart.

They were ready to camp for the night, but the bad news is they forgot about the fire
Ed. Note: see Q.157
. A house made of wood is no match for the fire, so it immediately burned down. Right at that exact moment, the freak blizzard Xalxe experienced
Ed. Note: see Q.147
chose to show up, so the final thing they'd need to know to make it out of there alive was...

166
HOW TO STAY WARM DURING A BLIZZARD

A
Create a "people pile" on a blanket with the larger family members lying on the bottom and the smaller stacked on top.
B
Cut off your hair and use it to fill your jacket and pants as an extra layer of insulation.
C
Get everyone to stay in one sealed room, and heat it with candles.

It was hard, but Cheery Dog and the logger eventually survived the night. Sadly, when they woke up in the morning, they realized that they could have just taken the logger's fully working, non-burnt pickup the full mile back to society... or just walked across the street to the mini mart there and called a cab. Live and learn.

Also, those were random cards. It just so happens that 6/10 sides of them had illnesses.
