1) Modding lets you actually get invested in the game and feel like you're doing something, while also not having to play and think too much.
2) You can watch things happen in real time while simultaneously knowing everything that's going on behind the scenes.
3) I think people just like being "the boss". For a few months you get to be the supreme ruler of your own tiny, tiny section of the internet. They have to follow your rules. They have to ask your permission to do certain things. People spend hours and hours and months on these games and are relying on YOU to run the game smoothly. So I think some people just crave having that kind of responsibility and having people trust them to provide entertainment.
