QUESTION 3 OF 4

How many amendments to the United States Constitution are there currently?

  1. 29
  2. 27
  3. 28

TABLE OF CONTENTS

  1. Rules
  2. Question Round
  3. Big Board Round
  4. Important Notes
  5. Queue
  6. Leader Board
  7. Games So Far

RULES

This game will be played in four rounds: a question round, a Big Board round, a second Question Round, and a second Big Board round. Players will be seated at random.

QUESTION ROUND

I will ask a series of four questions. Each question starts off open-ended, but becomes multiple choice once a player gives a response (in which case said response is always A), all players pass the open-ended question, or 24 hours pass without an answer attempt. Once the multiple-choice answers are given, players who haven't responded
MUST
answer. Correctly answering an open-ended question is worth three spins; a correct multiple-choice answer is worth one spin. Only the first person to answer is eligible to receive three spins, and I can accept your first response only (with the exception that I'll give you a second chance if it turns out your first answer is not one of the choices*). There is no penalty for answering incorrectly.

*
Example:
The question is "Who was the first president of the United States?" Alice says George Washington; Bob does not wait for me to post the multiple-choice answers after this (and, for speed reasons, is not obliged to do so) and says Benjamin Franklin. I reveal the answer choices to be:
  1. George Washington
  2. Thomas Jefferson
  3. Abraham Lincoln

Bob will be allowed a second answer since Benjamin Franklin is not a choice. The correct answer is
George Washington
.

BIG BOARD ROUND

Turns in the first Big Board round will be from lowest to highest number of earned spins, with ties broken by the leftmost player going first. Turns in the second Big Board round will be from lowest to highest total from the first Big Board round, with ties broken by the turn order rules from the first Big Board round.

You may take as many earned spins at once as you have and as few earned spins in total as you wish. If at any time you no longer wish to use any of your earned spins, they will be passed to the opponent with the higher score (if your opponents are tied, you get to pick which one). If you have spins passed to you by another player, you must take them before you can use your earned spins (and I will take them for you if I'm available first). To take just one spin, throw 1d18, to take multiple, replace the 1 before the d with the desired number. Please be aware that, unless I get conditionals (or you Whammy out—see below), I will process all of them in order. Passed spins have an automatic conditional that they are processed up until you hit a Whammy—see the description for the Whammy for the reason.

What happens after each spin depends on its result:
  • Dollar figure:
I will credit the player with the amount spun.
  • Dollar figure + One Spin:
Same as the above, but the player also receives a spin in the earned column.
  • Prize:
The value of said prize is added to the player's score. After a prize is hit, it is replaced with the next one in the rotation for that slot.
  • Whammy (indicated by a red caped creature on a yellow background):
The player loses all cash and prizes earned in the game. Any remaining passed spins are moved to the earned spins column.
If you get four Whammies, you automatically lose the game and your remaining spins are discarded.
I will warn you about this on your third Whammy; if you hit two Whammies in Round 1, I will also warn you to try to avoid a third in the same round.
  • Double Your $$ + One Spin (Round 2 only):
Your score doubles and a spin is added to your earned column. For the purposes of this game, this is a prize and it is replaced by another prize when hit; therefore, I cannot guarantee its presence in every match.
  • $2,000 or Lose One Whammy (Round 2 only):
You have the choice of taking the money or having a Whammy marker taken away from you. If you have no Whammies, you are automatically given the $2,000.
  • Directional space:
These have self-explanatory directions written on them. Some give the player a choice of where to move; in this case, I'll ask which square is desired. If one or more of the choices is a prize, you will not be told how much the prize is worth unless and until it is selected. (
    HINT:
I price trips as if they're round trips out of El Paso, Texas, the same as I do for StrangerCoug's Wheel of Fortune.)
  • Big Bucks:
Directional to the highest cash square on the board (which will always be on the other side of the board above it). The highest squares in Round 1 are $3,000, $4,000, and $5,000; for Round 2, these three values increase to $6,000 + One Spin, $8,000 + One Spin, and $10,000 + One Spin.

The Big Board does not have a static configuration.
Before the Big Board round, I will have random.org generate 18 numbers from 1 to 3 for each spin that was earned; the results determine how the board will actually look during your spin. Each time an extra spin is earned, I will generate 18 more such numbers. There's not really a way to be sure exactly what you hit :P

The player with the most money at the end of the second Big Board round wins. (There are no tiebreakers at this point—I will declare co-champions if the game ends in a tie.) You must win the game for your score to be entered into the leader board.

Champions retire after winning three games or $100,000 or more over the course of one visit.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • If you go 48 hours without spinning, I will prod you. If you do not respond to the prod within 24 hours, you autoplay through all of your spins; squares that give you a choice default to the least advantageous option that isn't a prize. During the multiple-choice phases of the question rounds, you will be prodded after 24 hours without an answer and treated as having answered incorrectly after another 24 hours.
  • Please do not edit your posts. I must rule all edited guesses as incorrect and assume that any edited spin was originally one that was going to land on a Whammy. Caught answer changes also result in a Whammy; if you edit your answer in the open-ended portion of the question, you are locked out until the next question and your opponents will be given the default multiple-choice answers.
  • I owe some image credits to David Frangioso of the Press Your Luck Madness site. The Whammy slides in this game are adapted from his fan art, and I thank him for his work. I hope he doesn't mind that I'm using them here.

QUEUE

Let us welcome our first three players to Press Your Luck!
Image

Here is how our first question round is going to work: I ask an open-ended question. Once I get an answer, it becomes multiple-choice. If you're first to answer and you're right, you get three spins, if you're second or third to answer and you're right, you get one spin. If one of your opponents answers with what you were going to say, stretch a little more life out of that keyboard of yours and just say A :P Got it? Good! Here we go:

QUESTION 1 OF 4

According to Airports Council International, what European airport was the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic in 2013?

I think you guys need a teensy bit of help. I'll make you a deal: You get three answer choices. I need you all to answer A, B, or C in thread in the next 48 hours. If you're right, you can have a spin. I don't care which order you guys do it in. Understand? Now let's try this again:

According to Airports Council International, what European airport was the world's busiest airport by international passenger traffic in 2013?

  1. Charles de Gaulle Airport
  2. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
  3. London Heathrow Airport

  1. Canada
  2. Ireland
  3. Australia

puzzledan picks up a spin and goes to two, D3f3nd3r also goes to two, and Feirei stays at one.

(For future reference, guys, you're not disallowed from passing until after I give the answer choices. If you need them, then passing is preferred so the game does not slow down.)

Someone finally answered the open-ended question! If puzzledan is right, he'll get three spins; if D3f3nd3r and Feirei get it right, they'll get one spin. Here's puzzledan's answer and two more for them:

D3f3nd3r and Feirei, is the correct answer:

And now we flip you guys around to face...
Image
...the Big Board. At this moment, there is more than $51,000 in cash and prizes up there, but, as you can see, there are a few Whammies up there ready to take all that away from you.

Image
Feirei, you have the fewest spins, so you will go first. Throw Xd18 with X being however many of your three spins you'd like to take at once (but bear in mind it takes me time to set up the board for each spin). I will take any fair conditional for those spins.

At the end of the first spin round, Feirei has $2,975, D3f3nd3r has $5,236, while puzzledan leads with $11,235 and will go last in the second spin round.

Let's not waste any more time with the second question round. I've got four more questions, and hopefully, you've got four more answers, because I'd like to give out some more spins. The deal's the same as in the first question round, and we start with this:

QUESTION 1 OF 4

It is, in fact, A.
Image
puzzledan picks up a spin and goes to five, D3f3nd3r picks up three spins and also goes to five, and Feirei picks up a spin and goes to three.

It's now time to go back to the Big Board.
Image
If you will notice, the stakes have reached dramatically. There's over $139,000 cash and prizes up there, but one thing hasn't gone away, and that's the Whammy. You know why you don't want to run into him.
Image
In Round 2, we start with the player with the least money, and Feirei, that's you. Trailing by $8,260 may be a lot, but as you can see, you could catapult yourself into the lead with one spin of the board. Feeling lucky?

I wouldn't throw in the towel so fast, Feirei. Let's see what happens, though...

Your first spin stops at...
Image
...$4,000 and a spin!
Image

Your second spin stops at...
Image
...a Whammy, which you understandably weren't hoping to get.
Image

Your third spin stops at...
Image
...$10,000 and a spin—more money than you had before the Whammy!
Image
See how much of a roller-coaster this can be, Feirei? Ten grand in cash, two spins, and one Whammy. You're $1,235 off the lead. If you pass the two spins you picked up from the board, they go to puzzledan. What do you want to do?

puzzledan is going to have to take those two spins, but not right now. Right now, we come to D3f3nd3r, who's in last place with $5,236. One dollar further behind and he'd have a $6,000 deficit to make up. But five spins is a lot around these parts, and that can easily turn into some big bucks. Are you ready?

I discard spins after a conditional stop, so the new ones are being taken.

Your first spin stops at...
Image
...four thousand dollars and a spin (not a Whammy, in case that's what's flashing).

Your second spin stops at...
Image
...two thousand, five hundred dollars.
Image

Your third spin stops at...
Image
...five thousand dollars.
Image

Your fourth spin stops at...
Image
...a
LIFE FITNESS G7 HOME GYM
worth $2,999.
Image
Fourteen thousand, four hundred ninety-nine dollars. You lead by $3,264. If you pass your remaining spin, it gets added to the two passed spins puzzledan has already. Press or pass?

VERY
painful Whammy—I can see the schadenfreude in D3f3nd3r's face right now. Well, let's see where the second spin hits—you may well come back within fighting distance with it.

Stop at three thousand, five hundred dollars.

You are in last place. Somehow, somewhere, you've got to come up with $10,999 if you want to win this. There is at least one prize rotated in that'll give you what you need. If for some reason you don't think winning is everything, you can pass to D3f3nd3r, and if he whammies, Feirei will thank you, but I get the feeling you're determined to win no matter what it takes. Ready?

Press Your Luck happens to have been a revival of Second Chance.
Image
RedCoyote picks up a spin and goes to four, and D3f3nd3r picks up a spin and goes to two.

Want to see what Second Chance was like? The video quality is not that good, but it shouldn't be hard to follow along.

Both of the wrong answers were based on dice games, The Big Showdown (another Jim Peck show that aired on ABC, by the way) on craps and High Rollers on Shut the Box. High Rollers had three different versions, the first two by Alex Trebek and the last by Wink Martindale. RedCoyote is right in that I once ran High Rollers myself for a couple of matches; I think what happened is that I put it on hiatus so I could run the SCWOF Retro Tournament and I never brought it back out.

Next question:

I really don't feel like making the opening board right now, and the only change to the layout that can't be explained by the prize rotation is intended as temporary anyway. In both Big Board rounds this match, the red $2,000 in square 3 has been slightly increased to $2,015 in honor of the upcoming new year. I'd like to start an annual tradition around here.

The lady we're talking about is Lady Jane Grey.

This English royal, nicknamed The Nine Days Queen, was the
de facto
queen of England from July 10 to July 19, 1553. She was never coronated, and she was executed for high treason the next year. Who was she?

  1. Jane Grey

  2. Mary Stuart
  3. Jane Seymour

The American chess champion who took off to play in Yugoslavia was Bobby Fischer.

He won the U.S. Chess Championship in 1957 at age 14, the youngest person to ever do so, and would also win seven of the next eight. In 1992, he intentionally violated Executive Order 12810 to play a rematch with Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia. Who was he?

Your third spin stops at...

No money, three spins, two Whammies. What's your plan right now?

I've thought about just making all the slide combinations as they're generated and just highlighting the square that gets hit to make doing this go faster. The only problem with it is that I have to remember to update the prize slides if they get landed on. What do you think?

So I've decided I need a new question board since having all the projectors turned off made it look a little boring to me.

So it's out with the old...
Image

...and in with the new:
Image
Image
Nobody Special, Save The Dragons, and Xalxe, I welcome you to yet another exciting match of Press Your Luck. I've got four questions for you to answer. A correct open-ended question gets you three spins; a correct multiple-choice answer gets you one spin. You can pass the open-ended question if you don't know, but once I give the answer choices, I need an answer attempt. OK?

Let's get started:
QUESTION 1 OF 4

What state, nicknamed the Gopher State and the Land of 10,000 Lakes, is the farthest north of the lower 48 states?

Apparently, you guys don't pay enough attention to the news, because the answer is...
What airline's Flight QZ8501 disappeared while on route from Surabaya to Singapore on December 28, 2014 and was found two days later crashed into the Karimata Strait?

  1. Malaysia Airlines
  2. Sriwijaya Air
  3. Indonesia AirAsia

Image
I think you guys are thinking Flight MH370. That one also disappeared, on March 8 of that year with a last known location over the South China Sea.

Let's try again with one last question:
QUESTION 4 OF 4

"The Chairman of the Board" from the Rat Pack was indeed Frank Sinatra.

It's now time to flip you guys around to face the Big Board:

As you can see, we have over $55,000 cash and prizes up there on the board, but let's not forget about the Whammy. I think we've been around the block enough times to know what bad he does, considering its original run was before I was born.

In post 282, Nobody Special wrote:Wait, does that mean I lost a spin? I'm confused.

You were shown as having two spins due to mod error. Occasionally I forget to debit a spin once it gets taken.

Since we've all passed, this is now for a spin apiece:

What do I study if I am a vexillologist?

  3. Writing utensils

It's finally time for another episode of Press Your Luck!
Image
Image
Let's meet our players today. JDGA is the only completely new face here, but I know he's a smart guy. He faces two people who have been in this studio before: Nobody Special, our returning champion, and puzzledan, who played the premiere.

We'll start with a series of four questions. After someone answers or everyone passes, I'll then make it multiple-choice for the people who haven't answered. If you're first to answer while the question is open-ended, your correct answer is worth three spins; correct multiple-choice answers are worth one spin. If someone beats you to what you were going to say, then save a few keystrokes, say A, and be done with it. Remember how to do this? OK, here we go:
QUESTION 1 OF 4

We're back with Press Your Luck. It's the first Big Board round, and as you see, we've tinkered with it a tad over the break (mostly with color):

Tens of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes up there, but also a few Whammies. You don't want those.

I've got some important stuff (i.e. homework) to take care of, then I'll update all the images and let you loose on the Big Board.

It's time to go back to the Big Board, and boy, has it changed:
Image
I've upped a few things here and there. Moved stuff around, too. Square #16, right above the bottom-left corner, should look very familiar to you PYL diehards now. There's one thing I didn't do when I updated the board, and that is take the Whammies away :P What, you think this is called Press Your Luck for nothing?

Anyway, we start the second Big Board round with the person in last place...
Image
...and puzzledan, that's you. It should be easy for you to pull ahead since a
$2,380
$2,465 deficit (I was looking at the wrong podium) is not really that much here.
