Agree its impressive, but doesn't seem likely to be the answer. I do think there is some kind of each letter is a number type think, but I haven't had time to sit down and try things.

When converted to ascii, apples has 22 1's and 26 zero's oranges has 32 1's and 24 zero's. Capital letters doesn't work either.

In the book the "Register of New Fruit and Nut Varieties 1920-1950", apples appear on page 23....Okay, I guess that is a bit of a stretch..:

I have not forgotten about the game. What's been happening is that I have a square dance competition coming up (today, tomorrow, and Sunday more specifically) that I've been practicing for, in addition to Team Mafia eating up a fair chunk of my time. I neglected to announce as much.

Not to worry, though--after this Sunday, I'll be making an effort to revive the game, and be offering rewards to all the returning players, especially the ones who have been nagging at me.

I'd make this post an official announcement in-thread, but I'm kinda pressed for time at the moment; I'm sending this PM to ask a favor of you and convey the news in my stead, given that I'm about to be absent for three days.
