Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with inside jokes. Hell, the majority of titles are inside jokes.

This is where we go to discuss policy? I'd like to suggest we adopt the policy of lynching SKrew D1 in every game. :P

In all seriousness I feel like you should get rid of the super rigorous process shit like your new solutions and admit in the OP that the titling process is subjective from start to finish. You need 5 people nomming it, and then you do whatever you want. ANARCHY!

SK,

As another serious aside. I think your populist approach (like Button's populist approach before you) is wrong. It's all "discussion periods" this and "x number of nominations" that. Booooooriiiiinnnggg. This thread is about titles of all things. Titles! Effin' bits of text under people's names.

You only need two rules:
  • Does the recipient approve of it?
  • Does the title fairy approve of it?

That's it. Nothing else. Everything is at your discretion. You've got good taste and are expected to employ it for the good of the site. Everyone else can bitch, moan, bribe, threaten, throw hissy fits, etc. It doesn't matter. You're the motherplucking title-fairy and you don't answer to anyone*.

The Cheery Dog title really does seem like a case of blatant fairy bias tbh. Not saying it's intentional (and I don't think it is), but I definitely think it's there. Psyche hit the important point here that Kayak is something that N and SK use on the forums to refer to Cheery Dog and....really no one else ever does. Is the distinction that it originated on the forums really that important to a title? It honestly seems like it's something SK is using to convince himself of the merit of this title in the absence of anything that makes it good.

Like...my title comes from off-site. Almost any scummer whose primary interaction with me comes from anywhere but MS knows me as Frog or some variant thereof and it spread to a small handful of people who don't know me off-site. If someone wanted to know what my title meant, they could look around and see that people call me Frog and Ghostfrog and they could find that I post "Ribbit~" sometimes, but they would really have no idea why. And I don't think that's a problem. It's something that people do call me and it's a kinda sorta persona that I kinda sorta sometimes use. The fact that someone could theoretically find N's GTKAS and see that he made a forced joke about palindromes that caught on with literally one other person on the forums adds pretty much no value to the title. It's just weak and I don't know why it's being considered at all.

Then he should have to post lots of recordings of himself singing in the speakeasy karaoke thread to get his title.

Sure, man. But that's not really a problem.

SKrew has earned the title of Inside Joke Fairy, and it's up to him to use that according to his best judgement. Sure that means titles he likes will get pushed through. But who cares? That's the only reward he gets for his contribution to the site here, and far be it from me to tell him how to abuse that power.

Keep on keeping on, SKrew. We stand united under your reign of awful tyranny.

If two people are roughly equally deserving of a title and they're roughly equally good titles (by whatever metrics we're using to determine that; not the point) and skrew can approve one and reject another based on what clique they're in, yes, that's a problem.

If someone gets nommed for a shitty title and it gets approved anyway because they're in the right clique, yes, that's a problem.

The title fairy role has a lot of room for personal opinion based on how it's usually run, yes. But the role is supposed to be here for the entire community, not just the Members of the Community that SleepyKrew Likes Clique. I think people are arguing about the kayak title because that's their perception of what's happening. And it's not wrong to speak up about that.

If you don't think that's a problem... I just want to point out that past title fairies have usually kept the position for a number of years. That's a long time to not get considered for a good title just because you aren't friends with the right people (and a lot of time for shitty titles for friends of the right people to get pushed through).

I thought Cheery Dog was genuinely called Kayak, just fyi. This whole clique stuff is silly; 4 people who definitely aren't part of some SK-clique supported the title.

/shrug

I don't actually care enough one way or the other right now to get into it
(and even if I did care no one would listen to me anyway)
and I've had enough arguing for one year. I was just giving my interpretation of other people's arguments in an effort to clarify the apparent issue for people who weren't getting it.

Sorry, I thought the Title Fairy was about somehow benefiting the community, and not about stroking an arbitrarily selected scummer's ego.

Everyone else can bitch, moan, bribe, threaten, throw hissy fits, etc. It doesn't matter.

How can you be so short-sighted? What's even the point of having this titling process instead of others if everyone else is bitching and moaning over it? Whether anything happening in this and related threads are worthwhile depends almost totally on whether it makes community happier or not.

I'm sure I'm described the answer to that problem in my GTKAS thread.

I assume the joke hasn't completely died off because my skype avatar is still a kayak from after skrew first called me kayak there.

Because we trust in the title fairy.

Also because people who are unhappy that they can't control what's under other people's names aren't worth listening to.

Of course, SK doesnt have to listen to me at all. He can do things your way if he wants.
