Better than the alternatives!

(None of the caled titles make any sense to me, but it seems like there's context I'm missing.)

This is good, too. It also helps new users understand Waffles references (cf., the cayke title).

I feel like "shade" is something that you indicate with glee rather than disgust when you acknowledge it.

So I don't think it's a mean title.

Point of contrast: I think I Know People and RiotBRO are slightly mean. RiotBRO is funny, though.

I think shade is a subset of rude. They're not synonyms.

Shade is rudeness that is performed for the entertainment of others. The performance aspect is related to the association with drag.

I agree that the urbandictionary definitions don't really capture this, so maybe it means differently things in different subcultures.

Pedit: It sounded like you were defensive, so I inferred that you thought I was criticizing you.

I personally wouldn't get the shade association on the basis of BRO's on-site activity, though (other than his liking Drag Race and posting videos that feature shade or whatever). It's something that makes more sense after you meet him in person.

Maybe relevant to some people being confused by it.

That would not be a very subtle performance, so it would not make Regina a member of the shade brigade.

Better: Regina approaches a group of 4 friends and invites 3 of them to her party. She tells the 4th one that she likes her shoes.

"Dick move" connotes masculine rudeness/directness, which is not the same as shade. You would only make that comparison if you were trying to criticize someone's facility with shade.

That's like saying that maleness and femaleness are basically not different because they are both descriptors of gender.

There's a Platonic shade out there in the mindspace, and it has nothing to do with pouring milk on people.

I think shade occurring in its appropriate context doesn't make people feel small. It makes people feel like they are part of a community.

That's a difference that is relevant to your most recent criticism.

If you're going to openly indicate that you're really against the title nomination because you dislike the gay community, you probably shouldn't be surprised if people take exception to that. I'm sorry that you feel alienated from it.

I think the example Marquis posted is more like cattiness than shade, but they are pretty related terms. The shade-related aspects come from the audience of the head-nodder presumably feeling like they share her fashion values or whatever.

I don't watch Real Housewives or whatever that is, so I don't know the specifics.

Psyche thinks the title glorifies something that departs from the values of the community.

I think he is conflating the objectionable associations of the title with other things.

In post 905, BROseidon wrote:I think both are acceptable?

When I was first introduced to it (I think maybe through drag race? I don't know real humans who say it really. maybe some youtube video), I heard that while the "tea" homonym is part of the joke re: "spilling," the original spelling was explicitly T prior to people re-interpreting the spoken version as "tea" as it kinda caught on around the country. The context was that some young gay didn't know that and was ostracized from the wizened gays who were 25 or whatever.

It was also supposed to stand for "truth," but urbandictionary offers basically any other plausible "t" noun as its referent.

Anyway, I now can't find any evidence for that on the internet, and history belongs to the victor.
