Mini Normal 1692 – A Crack In Time?

Prologue

'So, that's supposed to be the away team, isn't it?' Asked Org0011. He was one of the Chief Organizators.
'Yes, Sir. And,' The Executor paused for a split second, 'I've checked each member's Timeline personally.'
'Good. Now, let's get down to business. Here are the names we should get rid of.' Org0011 gave a small plastic tablet to him. He wondered whether he could trust the new Executor but... his records were good and this seemed to be an easy mission anyway. A perfect start for a new one.
'What sort of names are these?!' Asked the Executor raising his eyebrows.
'Oh, those are not real names. So-called nick-names.'
'Threat Level?'
'2. Normally.'
'Which means...' pondered the Executor.
'Unless they start talking to each other, none of them would ever reach 4 alone. But if they began to do so... the consequences might be unpredictable.'
'So, we are to prevent their communication. How – and when?'
'Take this,' Org0011 handed over a small green disk. 'Find a computer with Internet access. I think you'll find one easily even at that time.' He gave the Executor another tablet.
'10. 10. 2006? I learnt History, Sir. Internet Access had become very common before the Sixth Critical Date.'
'Indeed.' He wants to look smart but it will sort itself later out how smart he really is, thought the Org.
'Anything else we should be aware of, Sir?'
'Nothing. Good Riddance, Executor! Do not fail us.'

The Executor turned around. 'You've heard the Org. On board, everyone!'

Thirteen people, one by one, entered The House.

The House indeed looked like a house and it was big enough for at least thrice as much people. Even better: it had the ability to look like a house from outside. Wherever and when-ever it went, it looked so ...natural as if it had been there all the time.
One day they'd be able to build a smaller time machine, they said. But until then, The House was the best – the only solution for the trip.

As the last person entered the door, the Executor followed. No one saw the strange expression on his face.

Without any sound The House disappeared. The trip to the past started.'

Mechanics and Activity

(11) This is a closed Setup. There are no Roles with explicitely Non-Normal mechanics (eg. Lyncher, Jester, Nexus, etc).
(12) The flavour is providing a story for the game. Although it is worth reading it,

it contains NO information about possible factions, roles or alignments

(13) The game has a Day Start.
(14) The Scum faction(s) have Daytalk.
(15) The Day Phases last for 14 days.
(16) The Night Phases last for 2 days. If a player who has any Night Action doesn't inform me about his Night Action, No Action will happen.
(17) If a player has been inactive for 48 hours, they will get a Prod. After the Prod has happened, they will have 24 hours to post in the thread or else they will be replaced.
(18) As soon as a player gets their third prod, they get replaced automatically unless they start posting before a replacement is found.
(19) If you are planning to be inactive for a certain period, inform me about it via PM or in the thread.
(20) In special cases a Deadline extension may occour, but do not bank on it.

Voting and Lynching

(21) You can vote by using the vote tag, eg. VOTE: Aneninen or by bold text in the following format:

(23) Votes are preferred being posted in a separate line.

Chapter One

It was time.
All of them knew it. Actually some of them even knew that they had been way "over-time" but none of them dared to question the Executor.

They didn't really have the opportunity to question him anyway.
As the trip started he went into the Control Room, set the door on Do Not Disturb and since then noone saw him coming out.

Although they had been having fun during the trip (and to tell the truth, none of them had cared a lot about the Executor), as the Arrival Time approached, they got more and more nervous.

'Okay, that's enough,' said the bravest of them. 'I'll check him what he's doing. We all know that we should have arrived by now. Even if we're not talking about it.'

Noone hold him back as he waked to the door.
Surprisingly, it wasn't locked at all.

It took a couple of seconds until he realized what happened.
'Everyone! Come over here!' He roared.
All of them run into the Control Room.

The Executor was lying on the floor. He was shot.

'Do not touch anything!' Someone shouted. 'We need to collect every clue. Someone has killed him and it's obvious that it was one of us.'
'But what about the mission?' Asked another one. 'We are supposed to-'
'Check this out!' A third member of the group pointed at The Timer. 'It's..'
'10. 10. ...1968??!' Someone realized. 'That...'
'...belongs to the Forbidden Time.' a calm voice finished the sentence. 'What WAS he up to?'
'We need to reprogramme The House as fast as we can. Where's that tablet? It shoud be here.' That was another member of the group opening a drawer. 'Here it is,' said while picking up the tablet. 'Let me handle this, I know how to operate it.'
'Why YOU?' shouted a nervous voice. 'How could we know that it wasn't you who-'

'STOP!' interrupted someone the forthcoming fight. 'What do you think of this?' He took out the disk of the opened drawer and held it high. It was a red one.
'That's...' someone started.
'...not the same disk.'
'I saw it too!' another shout was heard. 'It was green, I saw it!'
'That means one thing...' a calm one who had been silent until now summarized what everyone thought. 'Some people in our group are agaist our Mission.'

'That's impossible' snapped someone. 'We all heard it. The Executor checked each of us personally.'
'Well, the Executor's dead. I don't know what he was up to, but it's clear that he didn't check any of us.'
'And you know this because...'
'It's obvious,' the calm voice went on. 'Some people in The House are against our Mission. They want to go back in time to do something else. I think their plan was the following: killing the Executor, changing the Disk and proceeding whatever they wanted to.'
'But the Time...,' asked someone.
'They didn't suspect that the Executor would betray all of us. They were just as surprised as all of us that we haven't arrived yet.'
'So, if he hadn't tried to travel to another Time, their would be successful by now...'
'Ironically, yes.'

'Now what?' The question was asked after a long silence.
'Well, it will take some time to get back to the Time we wanted to go. We're decades away again, but in the other direction. We need to sort everything out by ourselves.'
'Can't we just return?' Asked another nervous voice.
'To admit that we've failed? We'd never be allowed to travel anymore.'
'Oh, sh--.'
'So, who agrees with my theory?' The calm one interrupted the conversation.
Some instantly, others with a little pause, but everyone raised their hands.
'Who thinks that we should sort it out, finish our mission and return when everything's ready?'
Yet again, everyone agreed.

'So, let's get to work. Examine everything we could. And remember. We can trust no one. Anyone can be against our mission. Even me.'

Thirteen travellers.
Left their well-constructed, predictable lives behind to get involved in an adventure.
Although none of them saw the whole picture – and none of them were allowed to do so –, all of them knew that the adventure had taken an unpredictable turn. No, that was not the right expression. Impossibly Unpredictable turn. That described the situation much more properly.

But they weren't thinking about the Time/Likelihood Matrix then. (As if they had learnt anything useful about the Impossibly Unpredictable territory of it.)

They were focusing only on the things which were right in front of them. Including on each other. Mostly on each other. 'Trust is luxury', they learnt that too, but they had never experienced the real meaning of this phrase before.

There was scattered murmur from everywhere.

'Okay. Who can tell me why noone knows this song?'

'Maybe' one of the students started 'it has never been written?'

'Good. You're going to places. Literally.
Our young fellow gets the point' the lecturer continued. 'It's never existed.'
'Let me tell you a story.
In the summer of 1999, somewhere in Ibiza... there was a young lady performing a dance which was so seducing that she was able to draw everyone's attention to herself. THIS was that very song. And the lady was called Liljana Sadlowsky. You all must have learnt about Liljana Sadlowsky.

Imagine another past. Miss Sadlowsky went to the party but this song – its title used have been The Forest, anyway – wasn't played. She got noticed by none, got drunk, fell asleep at the party and left the place next morning. Alone. At this point everything Sadlowsky ever made suddenly changed to "used have made".

So. Who can summarize the point of the story?'

One of the students raised his hand.

'We deleted that song from the past instead of Sadlowsky herself, because it was the weakest point of Sadlowsky's Line.'

'Yes, and no.' The lecturer stopped for a couple of seconds. 'Consider this. How did we delete that song?'

The travellers searched the Control Room, including the main computer and the Executor's personal belongings. Lucky for them, they found plenty of clues.
Including a willow rod, some novels from the late-twentieth century, a strange pack of cards, files with gibberish-looking texts, equations, numbers, names (maybe?) and some weird sort of music, two mirrors with strange signs on them, a statue of a scary-looking woman, and a big-leaved plant in a bowl of water.
The problem was that none of these things made sense in any way.

There was something else. The original, green disk had gone too.
And it took some time till they realized that the other disk was missing as well.

'Now' said one of them nervously 'we are searching everyone and their rooms and baggage too.'
'And who's gonna make that search? You?' asked a sarcastic voice.
'No. We are doing everything together.'

So the search for the missing disks began...

You're not the only traveller group being on a mission.
Someone, somewhere must have done something and you've ended up in a strange situation.

One of the travellers has disappeared into nothingness and someone else has just appeared in The House. It's peculiar, because... you can't recall anything about the person who was here before and you feel as if the newcomer... had been here since the Trip started.

Two average-looking, middle-aged men were standing in front of the transparent board. They were looking at an extremely complicated flowchart.

'I want you to express your honest opinion.' Proc05 started. 'Where do you think this Timeline should be attacked?'

'My intuition says,' Proc29 paused for a second 'this would do the trick'. He pointed at a long, cyan line. 'But, it's an intuition, so it must be wrong, mustn't it?'

'To tell the truth, that was my very first idea too.' Proc05 simled. 'I went along with the essential calculations and it would lead to the worst possible Off-Vector. Frequent manned space missions would be back at p=0.23 My next idea was...' he adjusted a few knobs at the lower part of the board. Some parts of the flowchart faded away, whereas other parts got sharper. '...this point.'

'Interesting' Proc29 pondered. 'It would take out three of the threats. Even better, the most important ones. However, it looks very risky.'

'Actually it is. Prone to attacks and Slips too. There's another possibility, though... just wait a bit...' his hand were working busily on the knobs. 'Maybe... it muts be somewhere ove-'

'Wait! Can you go back to that junction?' Proc29 interrupted his collegue. After some more knobbing an unusually complex part of the flowchart jumped in front. 'What's that?'

'I haven't examined it thoroughly yet.'

'Can you see it? Everyone involved has a connection to this place.' Proc29's fingers were running over some dark lines. 'What sort of place is that anyway, It seems to have connections with ...thousands of people.'

'It's too big for a real place. It may be on the Internet. However, it projects a twine to this area... and this...'

'What if we-'

'...attacked the place itself?' Proc05 finished the sentence of the other one. 'I think we need to do all the calculations to this place, instead of the persons involved. Thanks for your idea!'

'It seems to be long work. But I think I can give you a hand.'

The group spent long hours with searching but none of the disks was found.

'That means, whoever took the disks away, he or she must have hidden it somewhere.' One of the travellers drew the conclusion.

'Thanks, egghead!' A nervous voice replied. 'I wouldn't ever guessed this. You act as if you were a kind of leader but you haven't done anything useful until now. And I have no reason for trusting you at all.'

'As if you had done plenty of things.' A third traveller added it. 'And it's clear that none of us should trust anyone. Or do you know more than we know? Perhaps you even know where the dis-'

'Will you stop this?' Someone interrupted the emerging argument. 'I think I've found something which may be useful. Take a look at this! It was in the pocket of the Executor.' A scrap of paper was shown.

'Let me see it.' The nervous one took the paper and read it aloud.

"So je'f meid it! Nijs! On jer wei bek je mei wil bie etëkt bat wil' bie deer for je in tijm, ievn if je badi meinat wil bie seift. Dis iz aur lest mesidj, miet je suun!"

'Well, THAT helped a lot! Genius.'

Everyone felt that the atmosphere got tenser and tenser.

There was someone who was questioned by some, who was suspected by some.
But then, there was a glitch (?), someone changed in Space/Time and... actually noone remembered the traveller who had been (was? is?) here before (?). Not even his name.
Meanwhile...
Someone appeared in The House and everyone acted if this was... completely normal.

NakedJogger has replaced elusive.

Okay, the Executor betrayed all of us, but who cares? Even if he hadn't done so, we would have got rid of him anyway. With him out of the picture, noone knew too much about the original mission and they knew nothing about our REAL mission.
Everyone was accusing each other instead of making conclusions.
I knew if we were successful, it would be worth leaving my Time.

In the long term, on the other hand, there's always a critical point for the society. A critical point when "inside factors", like a revolution or "outside factors", like an invasion or a contagious disease makes the existing system fall.

Some has already realized that the "known world" equals the whole planet right now, which means there are not enough resources for everyone. Not even for the majority. Anyone tries to rule at least a significant segment of the world is in a terrible situation... in theory.

But we've learnt from our history.
We can't give enough for everyone – and it's definitely not our goal to DO so –, but we can give the people an ILLUSION. An illusion of being able to get everything they need.
Still, this illusion is to be maintained. Any ideas, inventions, discoveries, especially backed by are might reveal the reality.
WE are to fight against all those dangerous things.
"Fight" is not the proper expression, though. Noone can fight against or FOR something which... has never existed and never will.

That's our goal. Our mission.

Eleven travellers.

Involved in an adventure which had turned into something unpredictable. Some of them wished they had never left their well-constructed, predictable lives behind at all.

They found Slandaar's body. They knew he had meant no harm at all... and now he was dead.

'So. Do they want to kill us one by one now? Is that the plan?! IS IT?!' one of the travellers was very close to hysteria.

'It's strange, you know, because you wasn't that nervous when we decided to get rid of Boonskiies. What's your game then?!' another one of them launched some accusations instantly.

'We all know that we made a mistake. So, stop fighting, will you?' A third voice added it.

Chapter Three

Hopes were back!

The remaining nine travellers were looking at each other suspiciously, without trusting anyone...
...but, the Day before they had proven they'd been able to get rid of the enemy within. Or at least, one of them.

Finally, things seemed to be moving. Moving – in the right direction.
Even if Zoronos's death clearly weakened their position.

All of them, on their own, were planning the next move.

Having searched the belongings of Radja they found one of the disks. The red one.

A brief examination revealed its purpose: prevent the crash of a web page.
There was a short silence – but, not because of the surprise. All of them wanted to act as if they'd known nothing.

'So... how exactly does that make sense?' One of the travellers asked.

'And why are you trying to be shocked? I bet all of us have known at least something about our mission... haven't we.'

Slowly everyone nodded.

'By the way, look at the time. THE Time.' Someone pointed at the counter at the Control Room. 'We're almost there. Almost. So, it's over now.'

'Is it? Even if all of us have ideas about the things we are to do, we still need the other disk.'

'Oh. It has just slipped my mind. I hoped we'd be able to acomplish this mission Today. But without the disk...'

'It's not only the disk.' Another one of them joined the conversation. 'I think you need to know something else. Follow me.'

So they entered Thor's room. Only to find him...

'Well, even if the disk is missing, I might be able to break the page down. You know, I'm not an expert but I could perform a couple of tricks and after all, it's only a forum which is dedicated to-' He stopped and looked around. 'Oh never mind, I'll explain it when we're-'

'Wait, wait, WAIT!' Someone shouted. 'And you know these things because...'

'Erm.' Loranthaceae stepped back. 'I... er... had some time and read some files on the computer while...'

'Or, there's another possibility.' The voice sounded menacingly. 'You know all these things because YOU'RE THE ONE WE'RE SEARCHING FOR!'

'But, but-'

'Okay, GET HIM!'

'Wait, I could tell you everything I know but you're about to do the wrong thing! I'm on your side and-'

But at that point, noone really cared about his answer.

The House eventually reached the time it travelled to. Long ago it'd seemed to be an easy trip. At that time it felt like a nightmare.

'And now...' asked one of the travellers.

'Maybe we should tell everything we know.' Another one of them answered.

'You're beginning.'

'Why me? Why not you?'

'Or' the third traveller joined 'you could take a look at this.' A scrap of paper was held high.

'What's that?' The first one grabbed the paper. 'Where did you find it?'

'In our latest victim's hand.'

'What?!' Shouted ZZZX 'It was you! It was you all the time!'

'I seriously thought that you all might be cleverer. Say, RadiantCowbells figured it out. A pity that he's not here, isn't it?' OhGodMyLife laughed.

'You may kill me if you wish. But you WILL NEVER SABOTAGE OUR MISSION!'

'Of course I will, of course. What are you to do? Leave this place and live in 2006 or what?'

'You're not as smart as you think. Loranthaceae knew how to crack the webpage. I found his notes. And... you know, none of us were here without purpose. I, for example, am able to connect the computer of The House to the Internet of the current time. Mafiascum is down. It's over for good.'

'HOW DID YOU DARE?!' This time OhGodMyLife shouted.

'See?' ZZZX laughed hysterically. 'All your efforts have been for nothing! NOTHING!'

'You don't understand anything! Do you want to know the truth? You've just separated quite a couple of players from each other! Yes, some players of that page! Together they would have been able to make the world a better place!'

'WE've been making the world a better place for a long time! We've kept the world on the right track of Space/Time. We've-'

'On the right track?! Do you know what you're talking about? If you saw the far future... if you saw some of the alternative realities... you'd understand it. Your whole organization is a lie which only cares about its existence. Its power over the world. And by doing so, you've kept removing the progress. The talents of Mankind. You're the real enemy!'

'No... you're lying.' ZZZX shook his head. 'This can't be true.'

'Do you want to join us? To see the truth?'

After a couple of seconds ZZZX started running towards the exit of The House. He hoped that he'd managed to open it before, but

BANG!

He never reached it.

'Fool.' Said OhGodMyLife.

A few minutes later he got back the red disk, put it into the computer and started working. 'You know, ZZZX, you weren't the only one who knew how to do this.' Thought OhGodMyLife.

An hour later – and about month later – Mafiascum was back on the Internet.

'Well... it's still better than nothing. At least we could have our personnel back.'

'This whole Trip was terrible!' The first traveller appeared on a strange pedestal. It was Slandaar.
'What sort of bullsh-t of arrangament was that? It SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED! The whole Trip, even The House was against us! There must be a traitor amongst YOUR caste!' He pointed at Org0011 menaningly. 'And I'll find out who they are!'

'At least I tried my best'. Zoronos materialized. 'What the hell could I have done? We've never learnt about situations like this!'

'Why me? Why ME?! What did I do wrong?' That was PirateMollie. 'Can someone answer this? Can someone tell me WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!'

'I knew it! I KNEW IT!' RadiantCowbells was the next one. 'You should have listened to me! You all should have! Now you've learnt it in the hard way!'

'Well, don't blame me.' Thor665's first words were quite calm. 'It was smurphing confusing. Really. And I still don't remember a lot of things. Trips like this should be supervised by some elders, I think. Oh, and I'm really sorry, Mollie!'

The next traveller was a mere silhouette. Boonskiies was waving to the others. 'I'm not coming back here. You're against our kind. Now I know it for sure. Thanks and goodbye! See you in a different Space/Time. Without prejudices.' He disappeared in the next second.

'Wait!' That was BlueMoonRising. 'I don't think I should be here at all. I, actually... found something interesting and... let me think... oh never mind. 01. 07. 1995' he mumbled the last numbers quietly. Very, very quietly.

'Okay, that's it!' Loranthaceae appeared to be very nervous. 'I want to quit! I want to get back to my own time! NOW! This whole organization is more like a dis-organization! Leave me alone!'

'What happened?' Ricastle arrived. 'Were we successful? Oh... I think I know the answer. It was too quick. Or too slow? Oh please, where's a Doc?'

'...' ZZZX said nothing. He just left the room without adding anything.

'So?' At an entirely different place, in an entirely different time, there was another report.

'It's only me.' Answered OhGodMyLife. 'But, we've made it.'

'Good. That's the first step. We'll check the third part of 2016 whether we've been right. Until then...'
