Rules:

• Don't join unless you will participate for the entire season.
• All moves should be made with the intent of improving your team. Collusion is not acceptable.
• See the Yahoo! rules for more information.

Rosters and Scoring:

• Rosters and Scoring are Yahoo! standard: 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 D/ST, 1 K

League Setup:

• We will have one or more leagues of 8, 10, 12, or 14 depending on the number of players signing up.
• Invites will go out to the previous year's participants based on order of finish, in order to form League 1.
• After signups have been open for week or two (or maybe a bit longer, since signups went up early this year) and the player list is somewhat stable, I will fill League 1 and assign remaining players to League 2 (and 3, if needed).
• Don't start a league to "help out". I will select a commish for the other Leagues once I know who is going to be in League 1.

I'm planning to close signups for leagues 2 and 3 on Monday. At the moment we're at 19.

Didn't realize the season starts so late this year. Extending signups one more week. We do want a few weeks to get a draft time agreed on and get everyone signed up.

If I end up playing in both leagues, only L2 placement will count. The only time this happened before was 2008, and I won both leagues to make it irrelevant (2012's L3 was unofficial).

I expect we'll all try for the weekend of August 29/30 or September 5/6. Specific leagues may have times that work better for their group, though.

The reason we do it this way is to avoid the case where the two best teams are in the same division and would have to face each other in the first round.

Our best bets at the moment are looking like 9:00pm EDT on Saturday, Sept 5 or 8:30pm EDT on Sunday, Sept 6. I won't lock a time in quite yet, since KK is a dunno for both and Wraith has another draft at some point Sunday. The 8:30 time would be preferable for jasonT (who is in the UK).

Traditionally the league has valued some semblance of consistency in the divisions over concerns about "fairness" that are difficult to predict anyway. Traditionally we kept the "Adventurers" division together (me, Tally, IS, plus a recent champ), and put all the newcomers in division 3 (with the rest of the vets in division 2). With me finally dropping to L2, last year's league 1 was roughly geographical, and divisions 2 and 3 were random.

I was actually thinking this year we might try doing divisions by draft position (1-4, 5-8, 9-12). Anyone totally opposed to that? Otherwise I'll probably stick with random for L2 and L3 and let L1 decide how they want to do things.

Jahudo, when divisions are decided I will send you the divisional schedule (which I have in a spreadsheet somewhere). It's kind of a pain to edit manually, sorry in advance.

I mean, this is the case no matter what division structure we go with. What is more odd about this than "one team from each geographical location will go"?

Like, I could sorta see the argument that "you didn't win your division" but the question is "Is the guy that won the 9-12 division more deserving of a playoff spot than the guy with the 6th pick with a better team that didn't win?"

I mean, yeah, there's going to be luck involved how ever divisions play out but I think setting up divisions based on draft # takes out part of that luck and randomness.

There is an assumption in your argument here that the teams with picks 9-12 will end up worse than the teams in the other division. To which I would say:

1. That's probably not true. Last year, teams 9-12 were actually strongest over the three leagues in terms of playoff teams (6/12 spots, including all three of us at 12 with Tally winning L1 from 12). Small sample size, and because of the way zoraster drew for draft picks there may have been some bias between "player strength" and draft order, but still.
2. If there

is

correlation between the third of the draft you are in and your performance, it makes sense to give a bit of help to the teams arbitrarily placed in the weakest third by putting them together. In your example, maybe the 6th pick had a better team than the winner of the NFC West, but that's because the 6th pick had an unearned advantage at the start of the season.

The only element of luck that is really lost is some constraints on how many teams from each third of the draft order can potentially make the playoffs, and since those draft order positions are randomly decided, I'm not seeing why that's a problem (or why it's more of a problem here than with some other method of determining divisions).

If we're still talking about division alignment for L1, even though I'm not in it I suggest NOT determining divisions by straight draft order. If you must use the draft order to determine them, do it by snake:

1 + 12 = D1
2 + 11 = D2
3 + 10 = D3
4 + 9 = D1
5 + 8 = D2
6 + 7 = D3

Anyways, how are we determining draft order for L2? Is that set yet?

We're talking about divisions for all leagues, not just L1. L2 and L3 will either be by draft order or random (L1 I'm leaving up to them ultimately, though if we do draft order I would prefer it be across the board). This really should be determined before zoraster draws for draft order, so I'm going to make a final decision on it today sometime.

Why would we do snake for divisions? If there

were

an advantage to the 1 over the 12, putting them in the same division would just exacerbate that. The idea behind doing draft order is to put similar draft positions together in a division because they have had more similar opportunities in the draft.

We haven't typically had draft pick trades, no. Since the L3 draft is Saturday, I'm going to say that ship has sailed, but informal draft trade agreements are possible in theory (with the players changing teams after the draft).

The schedule we use has division games in the last three weeks, but the first division games are scattered through the rest of the weeks. Week 2 is all divisional (rivalry week), and weeks 1, 3, and 11 have no divisional games (rationale: first week is where you get the kinks out, and all three weeks are next to all-divisional weeks).

Also, I am not completely out of the L2 matchup with KK thanks to Matt Bryant. I'll need Boldin to overperform but that's *too* unreasonable. Certainly more likely than 29 (Scumleague Auction) or 50 (Tyler League) from Torrey Smith. (My GL team is just the worst this week. 69 is an unacceptable score for a 10 team league.)

Let's not forget Tally picking idiot kicker Mike Vanderjagt in the second round, pre-Voodoo, or that epic 48-45 championship game! (Different scoring - half the points for yardage - but still, those were some awful scores; 48 was my low for the season, and my average including playoffs was 66.)

For the record, I am very much against changing a player's lineup for a reason like this. It's up to Aronis to check that he has a kicker starting. (It didn't end up mattering in our matchup, but it very easily could have.)

It is worth reminding everyone that

picking up a player through waiver or trade will never automatically put that player in your lineup

(nor would you want Yahoo to do that in many cases).

I've been too depressed about my team to update the standings, but since I have today off, they're finally up for L2 and L3. If someone will send me all the results for L1, I'll get them in as well.

Unless Melvin Gordon has a big night, I'm going to be 0-5 in L2 after this week. I can't remember the last time I had an 0-5 start, and it's not the only league I'll be 0-5 in; in my Tyler league, Yahoo projected me for 13-1, but I'm averaging 80/game in a 10-team league with 2 extra flex spots. Just brutal.

And that still wouldn't totally eliminate it, because whoever has them on their schedule early when they are setting a lineup is at a disadvantage.

There is no way to totally eliminate this issue with a head-to-head format. That said, we could certainly find a backup manager from another league to step in for clear-cut cases, to at least sub for byes and injuries.

My family did Christmas on Saturday, and we put off shopping too long, so I was out buying everything Thursday evening. Forgot to check my lineup as a result. Didn't need him this week anyway...

I'm doing fine, and no baby yet. We've been quite busy though, and I haven't been checking in here because my L2 team was so terrible. Brutal season all around, but at least I won't be finishing dead last in any leagues and I'm in the L3 final.

Wraith is obviously the big loser in terms of scheduling this year... BS2000 had worse luck in terms of his actual record vs. his EPE, but he was never in contention for the playoffs with his performances. Wraith's team was best by EPE, and second in WDST and Points Scored, but was knocked out of the playoffs by going 0-3 in the last three weeks (in-division). Wraith was in the top half in scoring 12/14 weeks (with one lowest score), and lost his week 2 game as the second highest scorer for the week.

Meanwhile, the luckiest was Yiley, in the same division, gaining a little over a game to go 10-4 vs. his 8.8 expected wins; his finish was the mirror of Wraith's, going 3-0 to finish the season, including a crucial 5 point win over Wraith in week 13.

Despite a depressing 5 weeks as the worst team in the league and an 0-7 start, I managed to get back to 10th in all measures. LlamaFluff and BS2000 both had two lowest scores.

When I talk about scheduling luck, I'm talking about expected performance vs. a random schedule. Total points against doesn't tell the whole story - what really matters is how those points are distributed throughout the season.

He could have scored more points by starting Doug Baldwin, sure. Other teams could have made similar adjustments with 20/20 hindsight. But based on the points he

did

score, and based on the points the rest of the league scored each week, he was unlucky to have only gone 9-5. (The glaring example of bad luck was week 2, when he had the second highest total for the week and lost by 0.04 points to you.) On the flip side, he was also unlucky for Yiley to have gone 10-4, and for 4 of his losses to have been against division opponents.

Explanation of stats:

EPE is the "Everyone Plays Everyone" record. Rather than matching up with a single team each week, your score is compared to every other team's, so you can score anywhere from 0 to 11 wins for a week. This is equivalent to answering the question "what would my record have been, on average, against a random schedule?" - just divide the numbers by 11 to get your expected record.

WDST is a measurement of expected wins based on the distribution of scores, rather than a discrete comparison. For example, based on the week 2 scores, a score of 111.56 is around the 98th percentile - Wraith was expected to win that week about 98% of the time. Unfortunately, that week fell in the 2% for him, and he lost. The WDST record is the sum of these probabilities, multiplied by 11 to make it comparable to the EPE. In some sense it's a better stat than EPE; EPE normalizes for schedules based on the scores that were actually put up, but WDST normalizes for schedules

and

the distribution of those scores. That 111.56 still counts as a 10-1 record in EPE because of PokerFace's 111.60, but WDST looks at the distribution as a whole (that is, how likely was it for that 111.60 to be there ruining Wraith's day?), and credits Wraith with about a 10.7-0.3, almost the same as PokerFace. EPE is easier to explain, though.

Yuriko is the big outlier in this league, as she wasn't setting her lineup for most (all?) of the season.

I'm the lucky one here, finishing at 9-5 vs. an expected record of 7.5-6.5. I did have the high score three times, second only to TD37 (and hey, we're in the final). Considering I traded a decent haul to get Andrew Luck, who only played half the season, I feel like that balances out a bit.

DeathNote leads the unlucky club, only going 7-7 vs. an expected 8.3-5.7, including a loss with the third highest score of the week (to TD37, naturally). D3f3nd3r is up there as well, losing a full extra game on top of all his injuries, and Sharon lost out in a tight division race against Bert, with both projected between 7 and 8 wins.

Some wild variation in the league... On the lucky side, obviously LL is at the top there - even with the best team, it takes good luck to go 13-1. His expected record is closer to 10-4 (worse with WDST). Almost as lucky was hascow, who took the 10th best team in both stats (and total points) to the playoffs. He had the second lowest score three times, and won one of them (week 14), which was enough to beat out Tally for the weakest division (7-10 in these rankings, all with sub-.500 expected records).

Unluckiest: Everyone else in the Division of Death, who take spots 4-6 in EPE (and Rob actually takes 3rd in WDST). It's not so much that they lost games with high scores (apart from Kmd losing by <1 point to LL, with the third highest score of week 13), they just didn't win many games with average scores.
