Ca$h Cab (Jelly, Bowser, SC)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Thu Oct 15, 2015 7:44 pm

Post by lilith2013 »

Welcome to the Ca$h Cab!

Where unsuspecting taxi passengers test their knowledge in a game of trivia..

RulesThe object of the game is to walk away with as much money as possible. You do that by answering trivia questions correctly. Answer a question incorrectly, and you earn a strike. When your team reaches three strikes, you lose all your money and get dumped out of the cab! If you reach your destination without hitting three strikes, you get to walk away with the money (or play a Video Bonus question for double or nothing).

Setup:

At the beginning of the game, I’ll choose the starting point of your ride, and your team will choose a destination from a list of five places in Manhattan. One of the five choices will result in a Double Ride game, in which all values are doubled. I will then reveal the starting point, and the length of the cab ride between the two points determines how many questions you’ll be asked.

Answering questions:

When I ask a question, anyone on the team can answer by using bold tags:
Answer: Manhattan
or simply
Manhattan
. Your team can discuss your answer in this thread up until the deadline, which will be 48 hours from my asking the question. If a deadline runs out without an answer, I will count that as an incorrect answer. I won’t be prodding because after three missed questions (strikes) the team will strike out anyway and I will move on to the next team.

Types of questions:

The questions will cover a variety of topics, including food, history, literature, music, sports, and television. I will try to stay as geography-neutral as possible. All questions have a deadline of 48 hours.
Spoiler: Regular questions
The first four questions are worth $50, the next four $100, and any question after that $200. I will take only the first bolded answer for these questions. In Double Ride games, questions are worth $100, then $200, and finally $400.

Spoiler: Red Light Challenges
When a team has over $200 in a game and we stop at a red light (determined randomly by a 1d2 die toss, with 1 being green and 2 being red), a Red Light Challenge will occur. I will ask a question that has between 4 and 7 correct answers, and your team has 48 hours to give all of the answers. Your team can give a maximum of 10 answers, and there are no penalties for incorrect answers.

The Red Light Challenge is worth $250. You get no money if the time runs out before you have given all of the correct answers. However, it is not counted as a strike, and you do not lose any money. If your team reaches $1000 and we stop at a red light, I will hold another Red Light Challenge. There are at most two Red Light Challenges per game.

For Double Ride games, the Red Light Challenge will occur after a team reaches $600, and is worth $500. The second challenge will occur after reaching $2400.

Spoiler: Video Bonus
If you reach your destination without striking out, you can leave and keep the prize money, or try your hand at a video bonus question. I will put up a video clip and ask a single question, which your team has 48 hours to answer. If you answer correctly, you double your winnings. If you answer this question incorrectly, you will lose all of your winnings.

Shout-outs:

Over the course of the game, your team does receive help. You can use the Mod Shout-out by posting
Mod Shout-out
. I will stop the clock until I give you a list of five possible answers to choose from, then you will have the rest of the 48 hours to select an answer. Your team can use this shout-out twice over the course of the game (three times if you are playing a Double Ride game), and the shout-out cannot be used during Red Light Challenges or Video Bonus questions.

Entering the queue and choosing teams:

Anyone can enter the queue, as long as they are not already in the queue.

I will allow parties of up to three players. You can choose to form a team before you join the queue by having everyone in the team /in and confirm the team members. You do not have to join a team and can simply /in. Before the game starts, or at any point before I ask the 5th question, the first person in the queue can invite any teamless players in the queue to join their team, up to a maximum of three players. The players invited to the team can either say yes by /confirming or pming me, and join the game right away, or decline and wait for the next game. The players in the party can then keep inviting others from the queue until there are a maximum of three people in the party, although you are not required to invite anyone.

Determining how much time everything takes:

The 48-hour deadline for answering questions is equivalent to the 30 seconds that contestants get on the show. The clock stops when you have answered the question—i.e. if your team answers at the 24-hour mark, I will only take 15 seconds from the remaining time.
My asking a question will count as 15 seconds, regardless of how long it takes me to put up the question.
Mod Shout-outs: 1 minute.
I calculate how much time your team receives using the distance from the starting point to the destination. Then I calculate your remaining time using about 15 seconds per block.

Scores:

I will be keeping a team leaderboard as well as an individual leaderboard. At the end of each game, the winnings are divided evenly between all players in the party—so there is an incentive to go for fewer players.

All judgments made by me are final. Please be aware that this game is subject to general forum rules.

Final note:

I am totally open for suggestions on how to improve this version of the game—this is my first time modding a game so please bear with me :)

And a big thanks to Tatsuya Kaname for help with the setup!

You can form teams before you join, or choose your team from whoever's in the queue. Red, since you were first, would you like to invite STD and/or Jelly to your team?

Here's your choice of destinations:
New York Public Library, for some light reading
South Street Seaport, for the 6th annual Taste of the Seaport food festival
Bouley, the Michelin-star French restaurant
Gershwin Theater, to see Wicked
Gagopa, for a karaoke party

Remember, one of these choices will give you a Double Ride game, in which all values are doubled!

STD & Jelly, you can join Red’s team and this game right away, otherwise just sit tight in the queue there.

Yay for karaoke! Unfortunately you didn’t choose the Double Ride destination, which was South Street Seaport. No harm done though!

Our starting point was the
Bowery Electric
, a neat little bar with live rock shows and highly overpriced drinks. They do have open bars sometimes so that kind of but not really makes up for it. Anyway, that means you have 39 blocks to rack up as much money as you can.

Spoiler: Look it's a map!
Image
With a very crudely drawn line. Ah well. We can't all be good at photoshop.

Let's get started!

Here’s your first question, for $50:

What chemical element takes its name from a Roman god?

Remember, please bold your final answer because you can only give one.

Sorry, I probably should have been more specific. It's the Roman god of thieves.

I thought it was probably unrealistic to include street shout-outs logistically. I'd have to hope people who aren't playing would read the game and answer the question--and I'm new enough that I don't know what to expect in that regard--or ask site chat and wait around for an answer (and I'm usually not on a computer, so being able to get on site chat in the first place is rare for me).

Red, STD, and Jelly, you still have

We have 34 blocks to go, and I'll post your next question when I get home.

Yes! That brings you up to
$800
, 31 blocks to go. (I may need to change how I calculate time v. distance because this is going suuuuuper slowly. Right now I'm using 2 blocks/minute but I think 3/minute or even 4/minute is probably better. At this rate you guys will go through 40+ questions before we get there..)

Anyway, we're up to the $200 questions now! Here's your first one:

The Washington Square Arch in Manhattan was built in celebration of George Washington's inauguration as President. What famous monument, in turn modeled after the Arch of Titus, is this arch modeled after?

And....

That's correct! Your total is now
$1450

You still have

, 11 blocks to go, now two strikes and no shout-outs left. One more strike and you guys are kicked out of the cab with no money!

Next question coming up in a sec.

I do enjoy stumping you guys.

are these questions too hard? I'm trying to strike a balance between too easy and too difficult, especially because you got all the earlier questions pretty easily. also I accidentally rounded up too much when I was calculating blocks from my phone, so...

7 blocks left.

Also just as a heads up, I'm heading to a ballroom comp this weekend and I may or may not be able to check as quickly as I usually do.

The answer was diamond; since diamonds are made of carbon, I think I have to give that to you. (I mean, if the plant indicates the presence of diamond then it certainly indicates the presence of carbon.)

With 3 blocks to go, you're at
$1850
. Here's your last question:

What affluent California zip code is featured in an American television franchise that includes the series Melrose Place and Models Inc., as well as two shows with the zip code in their titles?

And here's your question, for either $4100 or nothing:

Completed in September 2015, this skyscraper is currently the tallest structure in China and the second tallest building in the world. It was the last of a group of three supertall skyscrapers to be built in the Financial District of Shanghai, the others being the Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center. What is the name of this skyscraper?

It is now StrangerCoug's turn! SC, there's nobody else in the queue right now but if any of these three join the queue, even after we've started the game, you can still invite them onto your team.

Here's your list of possible destinations:
Pio Pio, for some Peruvian rotisserie chicken
Museum of Modern Art, to look at really strange art
Hunter College, to observe a philosophy class
Becco, an Italian restaurant in the Theater District

No Double Ride here, but our starting point was the
Highline Ballroom
, giving you 36 blocks to rack up as much money as you can. I hear it's one of the up and coming clubs for the young crowd, if you're willing to wait in the ridiculously long lines for a chance to get in.

You have no strikes and two shout-outs, and here's your first question!

Originally titled
Insomnia Café
, what American sitcom saw its characters spend much of their time in the coffeehouse Central Perk?

Here is your list of destinations to choose from:
Los Tacos No. 1, for some tacos
Gramercy Tavern, for pretentious "American" food, whatever that means ($$$$ on yelp, yikes)
Grand Central, to catch a train up to White Plains
Cookshop: I'm still not really sure what kind of food they make but it's food
Baruch College, it's a college

Remember, one of these destinations will give you a Double Ride!

And that was the Double Ride choice! The first four questions are now worth $100, the next four $200, and any questions after that are $400. Red Light Challenges will also be worth $500 this game, but you will need to reach $600 and $2400 to trigger the die rolls.

Our starting point was Pure Thai Cookhouse, which is a straight shot down 9th Avenue. You have 34 blocks to rack up as much money as you can. Let's get started! First question, worth $100:

None of those either. 2/12 guesses remaining--here's where I say that the guess limit is really so people can't just list all 50 countries in Europe and know that some of them have to border Austria. You're not supposed to be penalized for incorrect guesses, so I'll extend your guesses by another 5 since this question was pretty difficult. So you have 7 guesses remaining.

Here's your first question, for $50:

Aaaand we're back! Welcome back to the Cash Cab, where we test unsuspecting taxi passengers in a game of trivia. In honor of the winter holidays, we'll be having a special holiday-themed episode, where most (if not all) of the questions will focus on holidays!

Jelly, you're up next. Please pick your team, and here's your choice of destinations:

Bryant Park, for some ice skating! (Free if you bring your own skates, $27 if you rent them..)
Rockefeller Center, to see the giant Christmas tree!
Union Square, to visit the Holiday Market, buy some overpriced artisanal gifts, etc. etc.
Molly's, a pub famous for its impressive Christmas light decorations
Colicchio and Sons, to see the restaurant's Elvis-themed Christmas tree (and eat some delicious food)

Welcome SC and Bowser! And Merry Christmas, everyone!

Unfortunately you didn't choose the Double Ride destination. Our starting point was the Tavern on the Green, which in my humble opinion is an overpriced tourist trap situated on the edge of Central Park (but I guess people like that kind of thing because it's still very popular). That gives you 20 blocks to answer as many questions as you can. Here's your first question, for $50:

What patron saint of sailors and merchants with a reputation for secret gift-giving became the model for modern-day Santa Claus?

Ole Saint Nick is the one! That puts you on the board with
$50
. Next question:

What nine-branched candelabrum is lit over the course of the eight days of Hanukkah?

Menorah is correct! (Although I would also have accepted hanukkiah.) You're now at
$100
, with 17 blocks to go. Here's your next question:

Meant to parody the commercialization of Christmas and the holiday season, what secular holiday "for the rest of us" appeared on Seinfeld?

$750
