If you have the IP address of the perpetrator, you can probably match it or at least greatly narrow down who it might be by going through the list of users. (Or if you want to assume it's someone who's been banned that would probably be a lot faster.)

Some things you just do out of habit.

That's true of a highly skilled, high profile hacker. A site like this is more likely to attract the kind of hacker that runs a program that's written by someone else, possibly to try exploit a known vulnerability that they don't know how to exploit but someone else has.
