I'm stuck between entering a 1969 song which starts off as quiet and dark and mysterious and gradually transforms into a much louder song, and a 1982 song which starts off as quiet and dark and mysterious and gradually transforms into a much louder song.

I'll go for the 1982 one since I think that'll be more to the tastes

Maybe

In post 10, Parama wrote:have i ever actually entered anything from the 80's though

distortion tones were generally crap, keyboard sounds were universally crap, prevailing style of vocals in metal was crap
Don't worry the song basically sounds like it's ten years older than it actually is and has none of the issues you list

GY!BE is pretty high on my "bands to listen to soon" list, I just haven't really listened to any new stuff for a few weeks for no particular reason

Same. It'd lose a couple of points for the lyrics, but fuck me that is some catchy stuff and it's basically two-tone ska which is a genre I love.

I would campaign for its removal under the "not a song" clause

I just opened the Swans one and the first sound really reminded me of something.

Have any of you guys ever seen the Duck Army vine?

tbh it actually got one of my medium scores, if only because it was at least interesting, a bar which many others in the contest failed to reach.

Next contest I'm planning on entering a 1969 song which starts off as quiet and dark and mysterious and gradually transforms into a much louder song.

Is it The Summer of 1969 by Bryan Adams?

Because that'd possibly get a 12 from me.
That's a 1984 song though

I mean, it's a game, although you're probably right about me worrying too much about the results.
I sorta go half-and-half - generally, I'll choose which artist I feel like entering first, then enter my favourite song by them that isn't really well-known, so I'm conciously entering a good song, but because I like it rather than because I think others will like it.

Also to be fair there is an element of chance to how well your song will do, in terms of the strength of other songs in the contest and which people made it into the contest (as they're more likely to vote).

Not to mention you really can't predict what others think - for example, I was not expecting For a Thousand Mothers in SC95 to do as well as it did, but I expected Beetlebum in the last contest to do better than it did. Imo, you should enter this contest with the fun of seeing others' views of the song, positive or negative, and hearing others' tastes, with actually winning not being your biggest motivation.

tbh I think I would have scored considerably higher if not for the vocals, didn't expect that to be such a limiting factor

It never bothered me but I get how it would probably irk most people

It was more the lyrics than the vocals for me lol
In this case when I said "vocals" I was referring to both tbh
