Also, a warm winter coat, a hat or headband (at minimum, something to cover your ears), gloves, and winter boots. A scarf is nice, too. Hats, gloves, and scarves are sold basically in any drugstore or dollar store here during the winter months, though. And I assume we'll spend most of the meet indoors, in public transportation, or in the underground city.- Mina

I was going to respond to your PM, but I might as well post this in the thread instead:
I'm free all day on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, I'm only free in the late evening (and I might need to be home on Saturday night when my father drops off his cat), so Friday is by far the best day for me to meet up. (You can all do your own thing on the weekend and I may try to join you for the tail end of it.) I've never been to the Grand Prix and don't know anything about the race schedule--I can either meet you there or wait until afterwards.
I don't know what kinds of touristy things interest you. Do you want to see museums, walk around scenic areas, enjoy bars/restaurants/nightlife? I can suggest a list of activities if you want. There's a looot to do in Montreal. Alternately, we can be nerdy and do things like boardgames, escape rooms,face-to-face MafiaI draw the line at that one, etc.
The weather has been kind of crappy and rainy this week (which is bad timing, because last week was gorgeous). According to this, it should rain on Saturday, but the temperature is fine.- Mina

Yeah, I would very strongly prefer cigarette smoking be done outside as well, particularly if we're sleeping/eating there. But my vote counts for less, since I have my own apartment to escape to. Is there a large contingent of people whoIn post 247, hiplop wrote:I'm very allergic to nicotine so if possible can smoking be outside too >_>wantto smoke indoors, though?- Mina

I've actually found the guards stricter with me when I've crossed into Canada, either because I'm a citizen or because my average border crossing experience is so unexciting due to a mix of white privilege and looking like a fifteen-year-old girl. On the American side, they dismiss me right away as not a threat, whereas on the Canadian side, they think there's a non-zero chance I could have brought back fruit or shopped for more than the allowed limit.- Mina

I'm unfortunately working until late on Tuesday, but I can meet with you guys on Wednesday or Thursday evenings if there are plans then. I also know at least one IRL friend who might be interested in coming to specific events.
Do people have particular touristy things you want to do? I can give recommendations.- Mina

The following are mandatory, in that case:
1) Poutine
2) Smoked meat (however, I veto the Reubens that we go to EVERY meet, even though I warn people in advance that it's not good and they agree with me afterwards)
3) Montreal bagels (such as St. Viateur or Fairmount bagels).
Since it's too early for a Cabane à sucre, those are the only major Montrealer/Quebecer/Canadian foods I can think of.- Mina

There are two Reuben's on the exact same street, a few blocks away from each other. (Apparently, they were founded by the same people a long time ago but are run completely independently now.) Even the reviews seem to mix them up half the time. But one of them I haven't been to in years, but I remember liking. The other one I've gone to many, many times, because I'm always with people who refuse to walk to 1116 and don't believe me when I say 888 is worse, but the food is not great quality (frozen fries, iceberg lettuce, etc.).
p-edit: ninja'd by ABR! Can you please insist we go to thegoodReuben's this time, since maybe they'll listen to you?- Mina

If you'll be somewhere on the island tonight that's easily accessible by metro, I can meet you for supper (preferrably at seven-ish). Dunno if I can do anything afterwards, since I'm working tomorrow and have a ton of last-minute cleaning to do. What are people in the mood to eat? There are a bunch of touristy restaurants I can recommend. (I would also settle for not-Bad!Reuben's.)- Mina

Btw, non-comprehensive suggestions for restaurants we can go to, either tonight or the rest of the trip:
Juliette Et Chocolat - more desert-type foods and crêpes, but it's delicious if you want something sweet
Wienstein & Gavino's - good Italian food
St-Viateur Bagels - they have a bakery with bagels alone, but also locations with a sitdown restaurant in the Plateau area as well as in NDG
Poutineville - I've actually never been before, but the name is self-explanatory. (I had a bad experience the last time I went to La Banquise, so going with this instead to check off the poutine criteria.)
Cat cafes - there are multiple different ones, so we can go to whichever is closest. KITTIES! ^_^
O Noir - I always have trouble convincing people to go with me because 1) it's in the $30-40 price range, and 2) the concept scares some people, but I went once and thought it was an incredible experience. The restaurant is pitch-black, and you're served your meal by sight-impaired waiters. In theory, the lack of sight is supposed to heighten your sense of taste, but in practice the best part is attempting to find your mouth in the dark. When I went, it was with near-strangers, so it was a great icebreaker.
Aux Vivres - a vegan restaurant, so like hell will anyone agree to this, but worth a shot. The food is delicious, though.
If not-bad!Reubens doesn't work out, there are a ton of other smoked meat places (Schwartz's, Snowdon Deli, etc.)
Chinatown also has lots of restaurants. There are also so many sushi places there's no point in me listing them. :p- Mina
