"Happy holidays" is bullshit Christian normativity.

This thread is pretty dumb I guess. Happy holidays to me just means the holiday season of like, Thanksgiving onwards where you get breaks off of school and whatnot.

You are assuming that he didn't think you were a dickhead and was, in turn a dick to you. Yet you refuse to assume the same for others.

You know. There is a small line between TSO and TSQ.

Their own personal ethics. You realize that people who don't think they have to answer to a god still have to answer to -themselves- right? Personally, I'm religious, but if you can't understand that ethics and morals are not a matter of believing in a god then I don't know what to tell you.

Eagersnake, I'm also from the US, people have ethics. You may not agree with some of them, that's fine, but they are there. Laws are made, among other reasons, to enforce particular ethics that we as a society find important enough to punish officially those who break them. You are shifting your argument from "Atheists don't have a reason to have ethics because they don't think a god will punish them, therefore if they don't get caught so what" to "Oh people in the US don't have ethics, unless it's against the law". That's dumb. Don't be dumb.

Or, the more blatant example given by Penn of Penn and Teller. "I'm not religious, and because of that, I've killed exactly as many people as I want to. None. A big fat goose egg."

I don't think somebody saying "In my experience, many Muslim and Sikh families do celebrate Christmas" is any more invalidating of your experiences than you saying "In my experience, few Muslim and Sikh families celebrate Christmas".

this whole conversation is odd.
Well, it's more that I know the people getting married well and I know they never set foot in churches. They have no personal relationship with any clergy and pretty much only hire them for the ceremony (usually a gesture for their parents or extended family). Then that priest usually takes a moment during someone else wedding to talk about how great God and Jesus are. To me it always comes off as a crass advertisement.

I might be alone on this so feel free to ignore my ranting.
If they brought the person in as a gesture for parents/extended family, maybe they want the guy to talk up religion as a gesture for parents/extended family too? That's been the case in several weddings I've attended.
