COUNTDOWN - Game Eight soon

The Game of Letters and Numbers

CURRENT STATUS:

Endgame
racefan12: 60
Cheery Dog: 40

COMPLETED GAMES:

Game 1 (D3f3nd3r vs. BipolarChemist)
Game 2 (BipolarChemist vs. Mitillos)
Game 3 (Mitillos vs. Cheery Dog)
Game 4 (Mitillos vs. lilith2013)
Game 5 (Mitillos vs. Realeo)
Game 6 (racefan12 vs. StrangerCoug)

RULES:

Countdown
is a game of two halves. Each half will consist of three letters rounds followed by a numbers round. Following the second half, a Conundrum is played. The turn order in game one and any game without a champion will be determined by a 1d2 dice roll; in all other matches, the champion makes the picks for the first letters round. Turns alternate for each round, with the order switching for the second half (so Player 1 will start rounds 1, 3, 6 and 8, while Player 2 will start rounds 2, 4, 5 and 7).

THE LETTERS GAME:

There are two decks of letters available: one containing only consonants, one containing only vowels (Y is a consonant). These decks will be based on lists generated by random.org; the frequencies used to determine those lists will not be revealed.

Whoever has control will ask for a consonant or a vowel - I will post the top card of the corresponding deck. This process is then repeated eight more times (although whoever is in control can ask for their letters all at once). The final selection must have at least four consonants and three vowels total. Once the letters have been revealed, the contestants will have 24 hours to PM me the longest word they can find from that string of letters. Words CANNOT have more of a letter than is available, be a proper noun, or use hyphenations. So as to allow both American and Commonwealth spellings, our word source will be Oxford Dictionaries.

The person with the longer valid word will earn one point per letter in that word; both players score in the case of a tie. In the case of an invalid word, only the player with the valid word earns credit. EXCEPTION to the preceding: A valid nine-letter word scores 18 points, not 9.

THE NUMBERS GAME:

There are once again two decks. One deck contains two each of "small numbers" 1 through 10 inclusive, while another features one each of "large numbers" 25, 50, 75, and 100. These decks are reshuffled prior to each numbers game.

Whoever is in control will tell me how many large numbers, from zero to four, they would like in the selection for the next round. The remaining slots out of six will be occupied by small numbers. Once the numbers are revealed, a target number from 101 to 999 will also be revealed. Once all is revealed, the players will have 24 hours to use the basic operations of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to get as close to the target number as possible.

Not all six numbers have to be used, but each of the individual numbers may only be used once, any number resulting from performing an operation on two numbers may only be used once, and all numbers must be whole.

Whoever comes closer to the target will earn points based on the distance from the target. An exact match earns ten points, any valid answer within five scores seven points, and any solution up to ten away from the target scores five points. As before, both players score in the case of a tie. If both players are more than ten away, or the answers of both players are invalid, nobody scores.

CONUNDRUM:

A scrambled nine-letter word will be revealed. The players will have 24 hours to make a single guess in the thread as to what the unscrambled word is. The first correct answer earns ten points.

Whoever is ahead after the conundrum wins. In the case of a tie, additional conundrums will be played until the tie is broken.

NOTES:

Players will be prodded after 48 hours without a letter or number decision. If a player does not submit a response during a round, they will miss out on any points in that round. Three prods/missed deadlines will result in a replacement.

As ever, please do not cheat. This includes using a dictionary during letters rounds and a calculator during numbers rounds. Rely on your own abilities.

Champions will be retired after winning four games in a row. They are still welcome to compete again, however.

If a player competes again after their initial game or games, only their best overall performance will count toward the leaderboard.

ADDENDUM 3/8: If you find a better word or a better solution to a round and the 24 hours haven't run out, you are allowed to PM me again with your better submission.

LEADERBOARD:

Order is determined by number of wins, followed by points scored overall.

1. Mitillos: 4 games, 4 wins, 274 points total
2. racefan12: 2 games, 2 wins, 120 points so far
3. BipolarChemist: 2 games, 1 win, 107 points total
4. D3f3nd3r: 1 game, 50 points
5. lilith2013: 1 game, 45 points
6. Cheery Dog: 1 game, 40 points (31 points in earlier match)
7. StrangerCoug: 1 game, 30 points
8. Realeo: 1 game, 24 points
9.
10.

In post 5, Mitillos wrote:Clarification requests:
1 - You say that not all small numbers have to be used. Does this imply that all the large numbers need to be used?
2 - In the case of the conundrum, doesn't this give an advantage to the person who happens to log on first after the conundrum is posted? Or is there a specific order, in which the players can make their guess?

1: Ignore that. In my mind, I typed six. Not all
six
numbers need to be used. That's now corrected.
2: There's no specific order. If it becomes a problem, I can probably add in buzzcodes or some other solution.

For now, it looks like game one will be D3f3nd3r vs. BipolarChemist. We'll start soon.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

Alright, let's see how you two got on with that one...

D3f3nd3r:
6 (SMILED)

Yes, perfectly good word there. Does it hold up, though?

BipolarChemist:
No PM received

OK then. That basically means D3 gets six points by default for this round. I don't like doing that, but them's the rules.

Dictionary Corner
: There were a few eights available this time around - DOMINOES, SOLENOID (as Mitillos spotted), and SIMOLEON, among others. Believe it or not, there was a niner in this jumble - MELODIONS, a plural form, meaning
multiple small accordions of German origin, played especially by folk musicians.
So there you go.

After that, the early scoreline is 6 to 0 in D3f3nd3r's favor, and BipolarChemist, it's your turn to pick the letters.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

That one just flew by, didn't it? Let's see how that one got over...

BipolarChemist
: 7 (TRADERS)

It's a great word... but there was only
one
R in the jumble. Bad luck there.

D3f3nd3r
: 7 (STRIVED)

Yup, that's definitely good. Another seven points for you from that.

Dictionary Corner:
Seven was the best you could do, so well done. Other sevens included ADVISER, DIVERTS, TIRADES, STARVED, and VIZARDS, which are masks and/or disguises.

Going into Round 3, the score is 13-0 for D3f3nd3r, and speaking of him, it's his second pick of the letters.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

You know, these rounds just seem to feel shorter and shorter. Let's have a look at how we did...

D3f3nd3r:
4 (MEET)

Well, hey, these were some tough letters.

BipolarChemist:
7 (COMPETE)

You've made lemonade out of lemons here, I think. That's good for seven points.

Dictionary Corner
: Seven was the best you could do here - the only other one was ECOTYPE.

BipolarChemist closes the gap over halfway to make it 13-7, and it's his pick for the first numbers game of the match.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

Alright, let's see how hard this one really was...

BipolarChemist: 617

D3f3nd3r: 617

So both of them claim they have it dead on, that would be 10 points each if they're right. Let's look at BC's method...
9*75 = 675

675 - 50 = 625

625 - 8 = 617
Yup, that's good, 10 points for you. How did D3f3nd3r get there?
50*10=500
500+75+25+8+9=617
No bonus for all six numbers used, but that's good as well, well done, both of you!

So it's 23-17 in D3f3nd3r's favor as we start the second half of the game. BipolarChemist, it's your third pick of the letters.

Let's have a look...

BipolarChemist: 6 (NEEDED)

Yup!

D3f3nd3r: 6 (WANTED)

Also good. Six points each for that round.

Dictionary Corner
: I think we'll let D3f3nd3r sum this up...
...so many sixes but I can't find any sevens.
Indeed, six was the best you could do here. Well done!

With four rounds to go, it's now 29-23 as we look to D3f3nd3r for his letters.

I apologize for the absence - real life over virtual life, as they say.

D3f3nd3r: 6 (MORTAL)

Absolutely!

BipolarChemist: 6 (TAILOR)

Also good.

Dictionary Corner:
There were a couple of obscure sevens in there:
maillot
, which is a pair of tights worn by ballet dancers especially, and
timolol
, a form of synthetic compound. Otherwise, well done!

35-29 now, as we go to BipolarChemist for the final letters game of this match.

Alright, here's how that one worked out.

BipolarChemist: 5 (RURAL)

D3f3nd3r: 5 (LURCH)

Both are well and good for five points each.

Dictionary Corner:
Okay, let's face it: unless you knew what an achaar was (a type of pickle in which the food is preserved in spiced oil) or knew that something could be crural (relating to the leg or thigh), you weren't getting more than five on that one. That said, good job!

40-34 with a possible 20 points up for grabs in these next two rounds - anything can happen as we as D3f3nd3r to pick large and small for our second numbers game.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

And how'd we get on with this one?

D3f3nd3r: 927

BipolarChemist: 927

Another perfect round, or so they both claim. Let's have a look at the work...

D3f3nd3r:
100*10=1000
7-4=3
25*3=75
75-2=73
1000-73=927
Absolutely, 10 points for that.

BipolarChemist:
25*10 = 250

250*7 = 1750

1750 + 100 + 4 = 1854

1854/2 = 927
Different route, but it got you to the same destination, so 10 points for you as well!

It's now 50-44 as we reach the final round. Nine letters to unscramble into one nine letter word - the first player to find it gets 10 points, and with them the game, considering how close this is. Good luck to both of you - can we please now reveal today's CRUCIAL Countdown Conundrum!

(the board flips to reveal...)

*BRRRRRRRRRRRING!*

And that's BipolarChemist, about a tenth of the way down the clock.
HYPOCRITE
Let's have a look...

H Y P O C R I T E

*applause*

Well, that was certainly an exciting match - D3f3nd3r, you played a great game, and 50 points is certainly nothing to be ashamed of - we'll be happy to have you again if you'd like to play again at some point down the line. But with a score of 54, staging a last-second comeback, is our first champion, BipolarChemist!

*applause*

We'll move straight along to game 2, with our new player being Mitillos, who's been playing along with us a decent chunk of this last game. Mitillos, would you sign in please?

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

How'd we get on this time?

BipolarChemist: 7 (REMAINS)

A good spot, there.

Mitillos: 8 (MORAINES)

They're in the Oxford, a moraine is a mass of rocks and sediment carried down or deposited by a glacier. The plural of that gets Mitillos an eight-point start!

Dictionary Corner:
Eight was the best you could do on that. You also had ROMAINES and RAMPIONS (a kind of plant) there.

It's 8-0 as Mitillos takes the early lead, and it's also his turn to pick the letters.

That seemed like a tough set of letters, IMO. What did our players think?

Mitillos: 6 (IMBUED)

BipolarChemist: 6 (IMBUED)

Same word, and same number of points to each of them.

Dictionary Corner:
And yeah, that was probably the least obscure of the sixes. Also the best you can do, because there wasn't anything longer than that.

The points change, but with 14-6 the score, Mitillos still leads, as we ask BipolarChemist to pick some letters for Round 3.

BipolarChemist: 7 (PROTEIN)

Mitillos: 7 (PROTEIN)

Well, we clearly have some good players. Another seven points each.

Dictionary Corner
: No eights to be found here, but a few sevens on offer: POTTIER, POINTER, and TRITONE, to name just three.

It's 21-13 as Mitillos controls the numbers for round four.

(75 - 10) * (6 + 3) - 100 - 3 = 482
*applause*

I'd just like to point out that Mitillos is about halfway to a perfect game - the score now is 31-13, very much in his favor. There's still quite a bit of game to go, so BipolarChemist shouldn't lose hope yet. Mitillos has said to expect no variation on his picks for the letters, so away we go with Round 5...

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

And here's how that round shaped up...

Mitillos: 7 (VOLCANO)

BipolarChemist: 7 (VOLCANO)

And another seven points each for that.

Dictionary Corner:
That was the less obscure of the two sevens available in that one. There was also VALONIA, a kind of evergreen oak tree.

38-20 in what has been a more competitive game than what the scoreline shows. It's Round 6, and BipolarChemist's third pick of the letters this game.

Taxing, isn't it?

BipolarChemist: 7 (ADOPTED)

Mitillos: 7 (ADOPTED)

Same word, same points. Two very good players we have here.

Dictionary Corner:
And again, seven was the best you could do on that one.

45-27 now, and I'll point out that Mitillos is two-thirds of the way to a perfect game. Speaking of which, here come his picks for Round 7:

E E E E B F T S W

Eeeeep. Hopefully those Es will come in handy here.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

And we'd like to officially announce that we've fulfilled our E quota for this game! :P

Mitillos: 6 (FEWEST)

BipolarChemist: 6 (FEWEST)

I'm getting a strange sense of deja vu on this one...

Dictionary Corner:
FEWEST was actually the most you could get that time. Lots of fives, but just the one six.

51-33 as we enter the final stretch. 20 points left on offer over the next two rounds, and 10 of them are up for grabs in this next numbers game. BipolarChemist?

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

The moment of truth arrives...

BipolarChemist: 837

Mitillos: 837

BipolarChemist, how'd you get there?
25+2=27

4*9 = 36

36-5 = 31

27*31 = 837
Looks good here, 10 points for you. The question is, did Mitillos manage it too?
(25 + 2) * (9 * 4 - 5) = 837
That he did.

*applause*

It's 61-43 now, and the game may be decided, but there is still one question left to settle - who'll get those last ten points? Also worth noting: Mitillos, if you get this conundrum, you will have THE maximum possible score for this particular match.

(reminder: please buzz/answer in the thread)

Let's please now reveal today's Countdown Conundrum!

BipolarChemist trying to play spoiler...

...and succeeding admirably.

*applause*

And that's the end of the round, the end of the contest, and the winner, with a Krypton Factor of 61... wait, sorry, wrong game.

BipolarChemist, it was the first numbers game that did you in this time, but you did win one match, and put up a good fight in your second with 53 points. We'd love to have you again in the future, but for now, thanks very much for joining us.

Mitillos, you are the champ today with 61 points, and you fight on to see the next game.

Mitillos: 7 (FORAGED)

Cheery Dog: - (no word submitted)

Ooer - bad luck there for Cheery Dog, Mitillos will start the game seven points ahead.

Dictionary Corner:
Seven was the best you could do, but there were a few others this time, such as FORAYED and FEODARY, a feudal tenant.

Cheery Dog, you get the picks for Round 2.

(long stretch of silence)

...oh, we're still on? Let's do this, then.

Cheery Dog: 6 (NICEST)
Mitillos: 8 (INCITERS)

Yup, NICEST is nice, but INCITERS is the nicest of these two, and gets Mitillos even further off the ground.

Dictionary Corner:
INCITERS the only eight to be found there. A bunch of sevens, though: CRETINS, CITRINE, etc. etc.

15-0, and Mitillos has the letters:

A O E A N M S J L

And finally, off we go again...

Now then...

Mitillos: 6 (MELONS)

Cheery Dog: 6 (SALMON)

21-6, and Cheery Dog, it's your pick of the numbers.

Let's have a look, shall we?

Cheery Dog: 477

Mitillos: 477

Cheery Dog, let's see how you went about this...
8+1+5+5=19
19*25=475
475+2=
477
Yup, that'll get you 10 points for sure. Mitillos?
((25 - 5) * 8 - 1) * (5 - 2) = 477 = 25 * (8 + 5 + 5 +1) + 2
Showoff. :P

*applause*

And that makes it 31-16 as we enter the second half, and Mitillos' letters.

Right then, how'd we get on there?

Mitillos: 6 (ASSAIL)

Cheery Dog: 5 (LAIRS)

Cheery Dog's word is good, but Mitillos' word is too, and he picks up six points for that.

Dictionary Corner:
Only one word would have done better, that being ARALIAS, the plural of a kind of plant. The non-plural of that was the only other six on offer.

37-16 is the scoreline now, but bigger comebacks have been made, so Cheery Dog, keep the hope alive as you choose our next set of letters.

(one-month stop tape)

Er-hem. Let's do this!

Cheery Dog: 5 (SUITE)

Mitillos: 5 (SUITE)

Let's have you both check each other's papers...

(they verify)

Yup, looks good, another five points each.

DC:
SUTTEE, TUTEES, and TUTTIS were the best you could have done on that one.

That now makes it 42-21, and it now makes it time for me to admit I screwed up. Cheery Dog, you should have had round 5's letters, but I inadvertently made it Mitillos' selection - as such, I am making an executive decision to let you make the letters picks again for Round 7. If this affects the outcome of the match to a great extent, we'll make reparations. For now, Cheery Dog, for the last time this match, it's your letters.

Cheery Dog: 6 (SCREEN)

Mitillos: 7 (CENSURE)

And one letter makes all the difference here, and Mitillos gets far enough ahead to take this game.

DC:
Lots of sevens there; besides CENSURE, ENCORES and REHOUSE are probably the least obscure.

It's 49-21, and though there are only 20 points on offer, let's see how much these scores can be bettered. Mitillos, your pick of the numbers.

Yup, that checks out, and Cheery Dog?
Cheery Dog wrote: 50 + 25 + 9 = 84
84 * 10 = 840
840 - 8 - 5 = 827

That works too! Ten points each for that.

59-31, and though this game is all but sealed in Mitillos' favor, we still have a conundrum to resolve! The best of luck to both of you - let's now reveal today's Countdown... Conundrum!

It is!

And that's it. Mitillos, you are our first two-time champion in this game, and you've actually bettered your performance from your first game, so congrats for that.

Cheery Dog, you went up against a tough competitor, but 31 points is certainly nothing to be ashamed of here. We hope to have you back another time!

So yes, the final score: 69-31. Mitillos, it's your third game of a possible four coming up here, and you're currently set to face lilith2013 in it.

With that said... paging lilith2013, lilith2013, are you here?

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

Mitillos: 7 (COOLIES)

Its meaning creates a bit of a grey area, but the actual show has had it used successfully, so it will count here.

lilith2013: 6 (LOGICS)

As it is, the plural of LOGIC is unfortunately not to be found in the Oxford dictionary, so the points would be Mitillos' even if the length matched. Sorry!

DC:
COOLIES was one of three sevens on offer, the others of which go even more downhill than the preceding, so there you go.

Mitillos starts with seven points, but lilith2013 now has control of the letters for round 2.

lilith2013: 6 (ONSITE)

Bad luck there, I'm afraid - the entry uses a hyphen, so we cannot accept that.

Mitillos: 9 (ANATOMIES)

Many moon come, that's a niner! That's the first one we've had, and that's going to get you a whopping 18 points, very well done!

DC:
The only other nine was ANATOMISE. ANIMATES would have been a good eight there.

And so Mitillos jumps far, far ahead. It's 25 to nothing, but there's still lots of points on offer as we go to Mitillos' second set of letters:

DC:
A bunch of sixes on offer there, but ASUNDER was only one of three sevens, and the least obscure of those at that. Well done, both of you!

32-7 as we flip from letters to numbers, and lilith2013, it's your pick.

Mitillos wrote:108 = (6 + 3) * (5 * 2 + 2)

I wasn't kidding when I said there were a few rough consonants there, six was the best you could do. The two alternatives in the world of sixes are VOICED and BODICE.

48-23, and Mitillos' final letters this game:

And again, six was the best possible here. The less obscure of the two is URETER, whose definition I hesitate to discuss here. Also on offer: KERERU, a type of pigeon.

53-28, and lilith, it's your final picks of the match.

*ba-da ba-da ba-da-da-da BOWWWWWWW!*

Those seemed a better set, but was it any better for you two?

lilith2013: 7 (AIRLIFT)

Mitillos: 7 (FRONTAL)

The good news is that they're both good, another seven points apiece.

DC:
There could have been an eight there - INFLATOR works with this set. A few other sevens, too: TINFOIL AND AIRFOIL.

60-35, and the bad news for lilith is that Mitillos officially cannot be caught, but let's give both of you a chance to rack up those totals! Mitillos, your numbers, please.

And I'm not even gonna go through the formalities, 6x50 is 300, you both got that, 10 points each.

70-45, very good scores on the day, but we can get one of them a bit higher, I think. Let's please now reveal today's Countdown Conundrum!

A hesitant buzz that time...

...but it works!

Mitillos, that's 80 points this game, breaking your own record again. You're just one match away from being an undefeated champion!

lilith, Mitillos has been unstoppable, but you've done quite well given the circumstances. Thank you for playing!

We'll continue once Mitillos is back.

And we be here. Mitillos is playing to become an undefeated champion. Realeo wants to take over the champions' throne for himself. Who will prevail? Let's find out...

Mitillos starts the match:

Mitillos: 8 (ENTRAILS)

Realeo: - (nothing submitted)

Ouch. I suppose Realeo is lucky Mitillos couldn't spot a nine in there.

DC:
Not that he could have, best he could do was eight. Lots of 'em there, actually. LATRINES, ARTESIAN, and the slightly curious RATLINES, to name a few.

8-0 in Mitillos' favor, and Realeo picks the letters this time.

1) You won't be prodded during a round, only during the selections. Sorry, but I am willing to look into the policy again in the future.

2) Unfortunately, our musical abilities are quite limited here. :P Also, you're required to have at least three vowels in the set. Do you want to change your selections?

Realeo: 7 (FEEDING)

Mitillos: 7 (FEIGNED)

Great on both counts! Realeo makes it on the board.

DC:
Not an eight in sight, but scores of sevens there. SEEDING, DEFINES, SWINGED, and if you're playing Junior Countdown, WEDGIES, to name just a few.

Mitillos is still up 15-7, and the next picks are his:

Let's see how you did....

Mitillos: 7 (DEAFENS)

Realeo: 5 (WANDS)

The S works in favor of both of you, but this round and seven points will go in favor of Mitillos.

DC:
Hooray for compound words! NEWSFEED was the one eight to spot in this set.

But hey, Mitillos ain't complaining, he's now up 22-7.

Realeo, now's your chance to start a comeback - your numbers please.

Right then, Realeo, what do you have?

Parentheses aside, it's good!

Mitillos?

Let's see if I can remember how to do this... Can we have the next item up for bids, please? :P

Realeo: 7 (PIEROGI)

Mitillos: 6 (GOITER)

Pierogi is there! It's a kind of small dough dumpling, and for what may be the first time in all of his matches, Mitillos has been beaten in the letters! I'm sure Realeo will be all too happy to take seven points.

DC:
Realeo, another reason to be proud: that's the best word possible in this round. Well done!

This is still very much a game, Mitillos is still in the lead, but it's now 32-24, and he'll be trying to recuperate with these letters:

U E E E M S T M M

Okay, now that's just cruel. :igmeou: Let's go anyways...

Apparently we've been cut down to weekly status. But we press on...

Mitillos: 6 (ESTEEM)

Realeo: 5 (MUTES)

And Mitillos has officially struck back, that'll get most of those points back.

DC:
Couldn't do better than 6 that time.

38-24 with a possible 38 points on offer right now, and here comes Realeo's last letters of this game...

Realeo: 5 (AGORA)

Mitillos: 6 (GRAPPA)

Both good, but GRAPPA (a kind of brandy) will get the points on this one.

DC:
Couldn't do better than 6 AGAIN - actually, there were only three words better than four letters, so well done, both of you.

44-24, and Realeo can still hope for a tie, but it's Mitillos's last go at the numbers right now.

(100 - 6) * 8 + (25 - 4) * 6 = 878.
Yup, checks out!

54-24 as we go to the Conundrum. Mitillos playing to increase his final total, Realeo playing to increase his score for the leaderboard. Right then, if you're ready, we're ready... let's please now reveal today's Countdown Conundrum!

For the points...

...as if you weren't gonna get it. :P

Mitillos, another 64 points to your leaderboard score, and you've officially become our first undefeated champ. We have to say bye to you now, but you're going out about as honorably as you can. Well done!

Realeo, you finished with just 24 points, but you have the honor of being the only person to beat Mitillos in a letters round, which I'd say is pretty impressive. Thank you for playing!

And with two goodbyes, we have two hellos in the pipeline. It's gonna be racefan12 vs. StrangerCoug next game, provided we hear from both of them.

racefan12 draws first blood on that one for seven points, and StrangerCoug gets his choice of the last letters of this selection:

And racefan12's quickly widening the gap.

Queue updated.

racefan12: 7 (TOOTING)

StrangerCoug: 7 (TOOTING)

It happened again! Same word, same points, seven each.

DC:
Only one other seven on offer, TOTTING.

45-30, and before StrangerCoug's letters, a quick announcement. As of this match, we are now part of the Mish Mash Casino (rules post will be updated to reflect payouts). A player who matches Mitillos and wins all four of their matches could leave here with over 25,000 Mash Coins!

Aaand that's time.

Here's how racefan12 did it...

...which is good for 10. StrangerCoug failed to submit for the third time this game, and as such, would normally be replaced at this point. Thing is, the score deficit is 30 points when there's only 10 points left on offer. As such, I'm going to let the rest of this game play out normally - both players will receive their Mash Coins.

That said, it's 60-30 as we head for the Conundrum, which we're basically playing for some extra Mash Coins. Here it comes....

No takers? That's OK, we'll just show you what was there...

I N T E R F A C E

To be fair, it doesn't really end up changing much - the winner is still racefan12 with 60 points!

StrangerCoug, you were just about equal with racefan12 for a while there, and you put up a decent fight to the end. You take back 600 Mish Mash Coins for your efforts, and I hope you enjoy them.

racefan12, you get 6000 Mish Mash Coins for your 60 points, and that's not all! You also get to take on another contender...

Cheery Dog, are you still in the house?

Let's!

racefan12, you're seeking to defend your title, so you get the first pick of the letters this match.

racefan12: 7 (SOAKING)

Cheery Dog: 7 (SOAKING)

Same word, same points, seven each. A good start for both of you!

DC:
Couldn't do better than seven - the least obscure word other than SOAKING was DOGSKIN.

7-all, and Cheery Dog, it's your go.

Cheery Dog: 6 (FOREST)

racefan12: 7 (STIRRED)

And racefan12 will pick up another seven points for that.

DC:
A few eights to be found: DRIFTERS and FROSTIER.

14-7, and it's back to the champ for the next letters.

racefan12: 7 (SCREENS)

Cheery Dog: 7 (SCREENS)

I'm getting deja vu here - I could've sworn this happened just a couple of rounds ago. Oh wait - it did :P

DC:
Would you believe there was a niner there? UNCREASES would have scored you 18 points.

21-14, and Cheery Dog can easily make a comeback as they make the picks for this numbers game.

Let's see...

999

That's the highest number you can possibly get on this. Best of luck getting there...

Cheery Dog: 999

racefan12: 998

Alright, let's look at that 998...
racefan12 wrote:9×10=90

Nothing wrong with that, but let's see if Cheery Dog really did get it dead on...
Cheery Dog wrote:

(8+3)*(7+4)=121
-10=111
*9=999
And they did!

10 points will bring Cheery Dog out into the lead 24-21, and it's really an exciting match now as we start the second half with some letters from Cheery Dog.

Cheery Dog: 6 (RATION)

racefan12: 6 (RATION)

You know, that's the third time in four letters rounds you've both come up with the same thing. Keep this up and you may break a Countdown record :P

DC:
Sixes abound with this round, but just the one seven, AIRPORT.

30-27, and racefan, it's time for some catching up, methinks.

EDIT: Bad math now fixed.

racefan12: 6 (AMORAL)

Cheery Dog: 5 (MORAL)

One letter makes all the difference, and it's racefan that gets the points that time.

DC:
Couldn't do better than that, though there were equals like MORTAL.

Racefan caught up! It's now 33-30, but Cheery Dog, there's still time for a comeback as we go to the last letters of this game.

Cheery Dog: 7
(SNAILED)

racefan12: 7 (SLIDERS)

A good try there, Cheery Dog, I can see what you're getting at, but I'm afraid it's not in our dictionary. Still time to catch up, though, so don't lose hope yet. That means racefan12 gets the points.

DC:
SLANDERS, RAINLESS, and SARDINES would have earned you eight, but add an I to that first word and you would have ISLANDERS for 18 points.

Still a tight game in Countdown terms, 40-30, and racefan12, this is your chance to put it out of reach. Pick us some numbers, please.

(expired on 2017-07-05 22:45:00) to solve it, what with it being Independence Day in the USA. If both players submit sooner, this may be cut off for the sake of moving things along.

Results to be edited in later, but both players made it for 10 points each. Racefan12 needs this to win, Cheery Dog needs this to force a tiebreaker. Here we go...
