Last episode was good. I hope they have found there middle ground now. It was significantly up in the ratings last night as well.
Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.

I thought it was a solid episode, especially the Troy part. I found the main Pierce's dad part to be a bit hohum and ridiculous but not in the good Community way.

I personally loved the over-the-top aspect of the Pierce part, though I do think they kind of blew their wad on a "meh" storyline. It would've been so much easier to use the gay thing as a more prominent storyline in another episode. The episode got SO dark after Jeff caused Pierce's father to croak... and like I said, that seemed rushed and like it needed to be fleshed out in a different, more prominent episode.

Troy's stuff with Dean Laybourne was the best part of the episode. I fucking love John Goodman.

Possibly the most unexpected, outrageous thing to open to episode. I laughed so hard.

Other episodes this season--especially Chaos Theory--were more innovative and brilliant from a creative standpoint, but out of all the season 3 episodes, this is the one that has made me laugh the hardest, and a lot of those laughs came from John Goodman's lines. The initiation sequence was far and away the best scene of the episode. The astronaut making paninis was priceless.

The A plot was decent, but I wonder if the homophobia issue will come up again in the season, not for Pierce, but for Shirley. Which annoys me, because I'm pretty tired of Christians being portrayed as homophobic when almost every scrap of polling data shows that this mentality is changing. I realize this episode finds humor in a lot of stereotypes, but this was one that fell flat for me.

I will continue to lament the absence of John Oliver until we are given either an adequate explanation for Ian Duncan's hiatus, or a suitably hilarious scene involving a drunken Duncan getting his ass whupped by Vice Dean Laybourne.

I was also surprised by Jeff's fairly powerful righteousness streak in this episode. He was pretty willing to go to bat against the prejudices of Pierce and Pierce's dad in a way that was uncharacteristically passionate for him, and in a way that isn't entirely explained, I think, by whatever oedipal issues Britta thinks he has.

Pedit: how is Chang unbearable? He had, like, three lines the entire episode.

I laughed so hard that episode. I feel like it was a great episode. The Pierce's dad part didn't seem too over-the-top to me. It's Community. A lot of the things they do is over the top.

And yes, Troy/Dean Laybourne was HILARIOUS. That's definitely going to be a reoccurring thing this season, no doubt.

I'm getting tired of Britta's attempt at going all psychology on everyone, though. It seems way too out of character and more like a "WE NEED SOMETHING TO BRIDGE THIS GAP AND BE FUNNY TOO LIKE EDIBLE COMPLEX HAR HAR HAR."

^Like I said, it's changing. And it has changed in 2011 from 2010. And it is changing most rapidly in people in my generation. Evangelical millennials now support same-sex marriage at almost a 50% rate. Among mainline millennials, that number is probably even higher.

Not trying to turn this thread into a soapbox. Just saying that the way Shirley gets portrayed gets under my skin sometimes. That is all.

You can make the argument that she is. Some commentators include people born in the late '70s as 'millennials,' which would put Shirley in her early/mid-30's today. For a divorced housewife with two young kids, that's fairly reasonable.

(FWIW, Yvette Nicole Brown is, I think, in her late-30's, but at the same time, Alison Brie is 27 and is playing, basically, a 19 or 20-year-old.)

I'm actually fine with Britta this season. She's actually been right about most things, but she's always wrong in one TINY little way that makes it the most annoying thing ever.

Hey, it beat out CW and ABC. There's no chance of anyone toppling BBT, and Fox is pretty dominant too... so for NBC to finish above ABC in that timeslot, they're doing fine. ABC and FOX both destroy them in all other slots.

Well it helps that BBT and Community are the only decent shows in that lineup. (Although I have secretly somewhat enjoyed The Secret Circle, I don't have a high opinion of it when evaluating it critically.)

In other news, I only have one thing to say about this week's episode: Fuck yea Urbana-Champaign!

Wasn't really a fan of the episode. Wasn't terrible, just wasn't one I'll remember. Troy plot was good, father plot was lame.
