Another elk! This one had 216 cuts of meat, so we're doing pretty well. We're almost due for another quest too; by the time I finish tanning the hide and enter the village there will be a quest for us. Our homestead isn't much to look at yet, but I'll take a picture for you before we go to get the quest and smoke the meat.

Spoiler: The continued adventures of KerttuTwo
Image

Simple quest this time, and we certainly have that many branches lying around our settlement from tree trunks we've carved into logs for our house. I'll go get some after I finish smoking the meat, and then we'll have another 5 squirrel hides worth of goods from the village.

Image

Here's our home stead so far. Not much to look at just yet and most of our stuff is in piles instead of spread out neatly but oh well. I got a wooden tub and some smoked trouts from the village in exchange for our branches. The smoked trouts will keep us fed until the meat is done smoking. There are 380 cuts of meat smoking in the village should I also make a cellar because that's more than we can eat before it spoils. The most amount of meat you can fit on a single cord is 19 (the function for how many cords is something like max(1, (floor(meat/10)), so if you smoke 50 cuts of meat at once it will use 5 cords but if you smoke 19 cuts at a time it'll use 1 cord at a time. As a result, I have my 19 times table pretty well memorised by now but if you don't, the chatbot I wrote can tell you how many cords and how much meat you'll have left over.)

Image

Snowsnowsnowsnowsnowsnowsnowsnowsnow

It's september, so it won't stick, but it's the first snow of the year :D

Image

Our meat is done smoking and we got the branches quest again. I'm saving the reward for later, though. There are some things in the village that I want (a punt, a fisher's knife, a net), but all of them are worth more than 5 squirrel hides. I don't want any of them urgently enough to trade for them right now but we'll build up some credit with the village and get them later. Our trap fence is coming along nicely; it must be 300 metres or so by now.

Image

A wounded adventure! Will KerrttuTwo find the handaxe before the bear finds her? Find out in the next VC!

Image

Yeah we are fine. We didn't even run into the bear. The adventurer taught us some stealth skills. This is how our homestead looks now. I built some cellars and part of a house. you can keep all your stuff in one cellar but when you have a lot of food it gets annoying to page through it so i put meat in one cellar, vegetables in another, medicinal herbs in a third, and the fourth i put seeds in even though they don't need refrigeration i just like storing them that way. I will put traps around our cellars eventually to keep out animals.

It is getting colder and the lake has iced over. The ice is still very thin so it doesn't take long to break a hole to drink out of. It will be thicker later in winter, so thick it will be safe even to put a tree trunk on it but for now it's too thin to stand on.

Image

The ground is patchy with traces of snow and our trap fence is much bigger than this but this is as much as I can fit onto the screen at once.

Image

The thin snow is a little thicker now!

Image

It's time for another quest. The red circles show the extent of our trap fence. Each wildernes map tile is 64x64 tiles on the zoomed in map, so it's pretty big now. The shelter southwest of it is our settlement, but the shelter is built on the shore of the lake so on the wilderness map it shows it as being on the lake tile because the land juts out into the lake on the zoomed in map. The yellow X has my notes on the village (just that it has a sage. if there were animals for sale I would note those or if there was a rare-ish item that i wanted I might note that there too.

Image

We have to deliver a message to a village in the east.

Image

I bought a dog and named him Talo, which means house in Finnish. Does anyone want to guess why I named the dog Talo? The only hints I'll give you is that it is a language game that I invented and that it has nothing to do with the game of mafia (neither in general, nor this specific one). I'll answer after the game if anybody remembers and is curious.

Also have been getting some specific axes: a carving axe earlier and now I'm looking to get a broad axe. That will make building our house faster. The ground is too frozen to dig anymore so I won't expand the trap fence until spring. I'm also going to make some skis soon but there isn't enough snow on the ground for skiing just yet.

Image

There's a cow missing and we're going to help get it back!

Image

The shaman told us how to cast the spell to release it from the forest cover and here it is! There was a bear nearby, so we scared the bear way before doing the spell. we didn't have to hurt the bear, we just chased it for a while until it was far enough away for them to cow to feel safe to come out of the forest cover and then we burned some spruce twigs on the last cow track we could find and waited around and then the cow came back! Now we take it back to the village.

Image

We got 20 squirrel hides worth of trading goods for returning their cow, so we got a fine fisher's knife. I spent the next couple weeks working on our house, and I put traps around our cellars. The food in the cellars will bait animals but the animals won't reach the cellars to eat it. Anyway, it's time for a quest again.

Image

A nice easy quest this time.

Image

Sauna stones quest again, same as two weeks ago. Made a tiny bit of progress on our house but spent most of the time lining up tree trunks.

Image

Another two weeks went by. The snow is now ankle deep and we're travelling on skis. I made some warmer clothes because we kept getting cold. We ran out of food but we caught some elk and stag in our traps so we have almost 500 cuts of meat drying which will probably last us most of the winter even if we don't catch anything more, which we probably will. Haven't made much progress on the house though.

Image

Another escort quest! We can do that!

Image

After we took Niko to Koivula, he told us about some treasure in North-Eastern Reemi! These are good items!

Image

Two weeks later, another escort quest! I...don't remember much about these last few weeks but some food is ready and so we're not starving anymore and we moved some tree trunks around. I haven't got a quest from a woman before; I'm glad that female characters can give quests too.

Image

I took Arhippa to Koivula and she told me about some treasure buried on a small island in Reemi. I found the spot that she talked about, but of course the ground is frozen too hard to dig since it's January but I marked the spot and I'll come back in springtime with a shovel.

Image

It's been another couple weeks and we've made some more progress on our house. The reason the house is taking so long is because I'm not chopping trees down nearby our house to keep our settlement having a woodland feeling to it, so I am transporting them from several tiles away which means hauling them through the snow on skis which understandably takes time. If you want to build a house the quick way, you hire a companion in a village, lend him an axe, pay him well with lots of food, and tell him to chop down lots of trees and by the end of the week that he's agreed to work for you, your settlement will have lots and lots of tree trunks lying around for you to build a house with. Building houses isn't really a one man job and we're going about it the slowest possible way since we're not using nearby trees but building it like this is relaxing for me. Another quick way of getting a settlement with lots of buildings is to raid a village and kill everybody but sometimes when you do that, they kill you back, and even if you survive, if any of the villagers survive and escape they will spread word to neighbouring villages. Sometimes I play that way, but usually I don't.

Our dog got a little bit injured in a fight with a lynx but we killed the lynx and the meat is now drying and we have a new lynx fur to add to our collection.

Image

On our way to the village for a quest, we encounter a Njerpez warrior. In previous versions the Njerpez were uniformly hostile and the various Finnish cultures were uniformly good but I think I mentioned that this has changed in the last few years. Now, there can be robbers from any culture, so you can no longer tell that someone will be friendly just by what they look like, and not all Njerpez want to fight anymore -- some of them still do but others will do their best to get away without fighting and will only fight if you force them into it. If you go to a Njerpez village, they'll attack you but if you encounter one by himself he might or might not be hostile.

This one is wandering around pretty close to our home and our traps and if he is hostile, I don't want him to surprise me when I'm heavily fatigued from working on building our home, and it would be nice to have a broad knife for hideworking, so I'm going to go towards him and see whether he's more interested in fight or flight. If it does come to a fight then we might or might not survive. Find out what happens in the next VC!

Image

He became hostile when we came with 5 tiles of him. We seriously wounded him and he's bleeding but he cut our eye with his woodman's axe and we're bleeding too. We lost consciousness when we got the eye injury, but he didn't kill us; instead he started running away. It seems this guy doesn't want to kill us but he doesn't want to be our friend either. We need to tend our own wounds, though. I'm going to let him retreat and try to stop our eye from bleeding.

Image

We successfully stoped the bleeding and treated our wounds, but it will be some time before they heal. We got the rest of the way to the village without incident and one of the maidens came up to talk to us. There are 15 different quests but we keep getting repeats for some reason. Anyway, this is a fairly easy one, especially in winter because we can just ski over lakes without having to go around/use a punt/raft, and the reward is pretty good. Skiing over lakes is dangerous towards the end of winter and at the start of winter because you can fall through the ice if you're not careful but it's the middle of winter now and the temperature has been below freezing for over a month and the ice is probably a metre thick by now, even in the middle of lakes.

Image

We got to Koivula without incident. In Koivula, the NPCs dress differently than they do in Reemi. You can compare Marketta, standing next to me with the woman sleeping near the house, or you can remember that the sage and craftsmen in previous VCs looked different from the ones you see here. The northern cultures and the njerpez have different clothing styles too, and in the north they live in kotas instead of in houses and have herds of reindeer. We have enough food with us so maybe I'll take a trip up north to a village for the next votecount so you can see what those villages look like.

You can see also that our field of vision is diminished because of our eye injury. It will heal though.

Image

Here's a Kuikka-tribe village. Kuikka is a type of bird. They're one of the northern tribes, along with Seal tribe and Owl tribe. Kotas are tents made of slender tree trunks and reindeer fur. You can make one of your own but it takes quite a lot of reindeer fur to do; the one in the picture would take 24 furs of greater than 7 lb (reindeer, forest reindeer, bear, stag, or elk), and the smallest one you could make requires 8 furs, which is a lot! Our character is pretty well set up but we don't have that many furs. The benefit of constructing one is you can stay warm in winter even without a fire if you sleep in a kota, but they're kind of a late-game endeavour.

There isn't a good answer to the question of which tribe is the best because they all have their own advantages, but if you're choosing a culture to play a character and you want something easy, kaumo is good for carrying lots of things and brawn, owl tribe is best for speed, and kuikka, reemi, and sartola are the easiest places to live. if you want a challenge, play a character from driik living in njerpez territory.

Image

Marketta told us about another island with buried treasure and I found it; it's not too far from our home, but it's a pine mire, which is a type of swamp, so you can't dig there in the summer (too swampy) and in the winter the ground is too frozen to dig, so that's a bug that will probably be fixed next version (it's already been reported on the forums.) I put a marker for it anyway.

Image

Quest time already! We caught a forest reindeer and got a fine forest reindeer fur. we have more meat than we'll ever use drying. things are pretty good!

Image

Two more walls until our house is complete and it's time for another quest!

Image

An easy quest this time.

Image

It's early March and I finished our house! Now it's time for our next quest.

Image

We haven't had this quest since the first Kerrtu!

Image

I got a second dog and named him Faggyú, Hungarian for "tallow"! This should be a big hint as to what the language game is. :)

Image

Talo died. I was fighting the wolf in the trap and it bit me and I tried to disengage to take care of the bleeding and get the dogs out of range too but it bit the dog in the next step and the dog bled to death back at the house, so I returned back here for the screenshot. We'll heal, and we'll leave the wolf alone for now. Should've tied the dogs to a tree before going to fight the wolf.

I think you dealt with Town paranoia this game. It gets easier with experience, but it doesn't always go away. Nacho even was telling me I was paranoid of him and he was right. It wasn't until I saw something in connors play for myself that Nacho said that I got that Nacho was prolly town as well as Connor.

So basically, experience is the best teacher.

@Nachomamma8,

I'd like you to critique my game. Tell me what I did well and what I need to improve.

OK, so one tip that will help you in an indirect way. Try not to slip. What this will do is force you to pay more attention to both what you say and what you read, which will lead to better play.

Don't worry about it TOO much. The thing about this game is that there is no "perfect" way to play, everyone is bound to make mistakes at one point or another. I've had both Town and Scum games that I wish I could forget. But always remember that playing Mafia is a journey and its best to focus on improvement and noticing how you are getting better at the game over the long run.

It really is my favorite game I have ever played.

OK, so one tip that will help you in an indirect way. Try not to slip. What this will do is force you to pay more attention to both what you say and what you read, which will lead to better play.
Yeah my townslip over the daytalk actually led to more grief than it helped
Sorry for how hard I needled you on that respect. I was trying really hard to find something to grab onto.

It seemed like you were legitimately getting upset about it though, which made me feel guilty.

Yeah you can, thanks. The browser I'm using now has a way to disable them permanently so I only see the first frame now, but before I used to use an extension in a different browser that didn't always work, sometimes it would crash if there were lots of gifs or just for no reason or sometimes i was using browsers that didn't support blocking them. If I ever get a phone with internet access I probably won't know how to turn them off on my phone, so I'm keeping it in my ruleset.

In Conkeror I just use this now and I don't have to worry about seeing them again.

Code: Select all

session_pref("image.animation_mode", "none"); /* disable gifs */

No I just knew your case was very weak and didn't stack up
It was Connor I get genuinely upset with as I felt he was saying that I was lying about something outside of the game. I was ill at the time and at that time I also still thought Connor was scum. If I had thought he was town tunnelling I would have not got so upset :-)

First of all,

@Plotinus I am genuinely sorry for causing any stress during my absence

Second of all,
@everyone it was an enjoyable experience to be play with you but the fact that I live in a catholic household caused my time to be consumed with the festivity and celebration of christmas/new year.

You played well. The evidence of this is that you were active and analytical AND were NK night 1.

It's okay! These things happen and it's not too much trouble finding a replacement on a big site like this. It took less than a day to find someone. I'm glad you came back!

Christmas is a holiday celebrated by a lot of people, and so many other players were also busy around that time and took some time off of their games or posted seldomlier. People are pretty understanding about things like that. No one can realistically expect 9 people to commit to playing a game every single day for up to 2 months because of course people are going to travel or need to do overtime at school/work or get the flu, so you can go on V/LA (vacation/limited access) when you need to by posting a note in the game thread in bold, something like
@Mod: I'm going to be V/LA from the 23rd-28th for Christmas
and then you won't be replaced.
