You could have larger teams next time, or have the teams be the same size but each player plays two games or something. It's probably much less likely for things to end in a tie with more games.

Also gives you a chance to come back with a much stronger performance after losing if you have a 2nd game to play afterwards. ;)

Just floating ideas...

I think it's a fair question, particularly for people who feel like their play style isn't particularly valued by others.

"Why play to win?" is a fair question now?

It's a fair question when you argue for a system where fewer wins allows a team to beat one that wins more games.

Because in my proposed system, people that don't play to win aren't going to get scored highly, and thus won't win. Duh.

Just don't tell them that's how you're scoring it and it'll be fine!

oh come on people, team mafia is over, don't start FoSing and lynching each other all over again already?

Success is a mixture of work, belief in what you're doing and a little bit of luck; Young and Beautiful was the only team that won all games, they get to win team mafia based on a tangible measure that's relatively easy to assess: win rate.

I'll agree with zor (aside for sharing a reduced nickname that differs in the vowel only being already enough ground to agree with him!) in that I think win rate it's a fine measure, and I guess any other things should be considered only in scenarios where multiple teams came up with the same winning rate among the games they got alotted.

I don't think me losing the nightless means I sucked any less having to gauge my eyes every time I had to look into a setup that I thought became increasingly unwinnable by the minute and that I had to my best effort lack the survivability gene and find solutions one step at a time... sure, it would have been kinda legendary if somehow MS and I had managed to win that for our team in 5p LyLo, but oh well?

I certainly hope nightless gets nixed if/when the next team mafia is held.

Really didn't even want to draw that game to begin with.

But Team Mafia is unique in that the people on your "team" in an individual game are also your competitors in the tournament as a whole. The format doesn't work unless it forces everyone on a faction to work together and win. A system based on individual performance would skew the play toward showy behaviour like bussing, or lurking to avoid a nightkill as a VT. And also, do you really want whichever team signs up the four most reputable players first to win before it even begins?

Besides, why does Team Mafia need to be THE PINNACLE OF MAFIA ACHIEVEMENT and THE HIGHEST HONOUR ON MAFIASCUM? The Scummies are there to reward individual performance. Frankly, I'd predicted that with twenty teams and six games, whoever won Team Mafia would be whoever got lucky, not whoever played the best. No one player
*cough* who's not a vig *cough*
can singlehandedly carry a game, or control how every single member of the rest of his/her faction plays.

Nightless games are a thing, though, and they're kind of classic in a way. I just don't particularly like them but I guess they have their public, so I wouldn't be opposed to a variant of them in a future Team Mafia edition? In the optimal scenario, I probably wouldn't have had to be involved with it other than give Empire reads (similarly to Regfan on the White Flag).

I'd accept having nightless in the next team mafia on the condition that it can't get 50 pages a day again.

I was directly involved in a rebels in the palace game very early on in my time on the site and bussing marred that one and allowed scum to repeatedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory multiple times. (lylo)

It's not just a theory disagreement when I fault Metal for having that mentality, it's that I've seen bussing ruin scum in nightless before. It's exponentially harder to get away with it when you don't have a nightkill to eliminate the people that see through it.

I mean I realize you can't make everyone happy in these games and the winner isn't going to be completely objective, it just would have been nice to see a team that were working together and putting in effort to their games, even if they were wrong, win.

Team Mafia is an odd duck. The closest RL analogy I can come up with is an individual bridge tournament.

Players move from table to table; they play with different partners and different opponents throughout the tournament. In such a tournament, it's possible for someone to win through no skill of their own; perhaps their partners played well, or their opponents played badly, or the luck of the draw worked out in their favor. I'm sure that these tournaments lead to a lot of disgruntled players, who "would've won if only I didn't get screwed by my partners".

Whichever team wins the most games should be the winners of Team Mafia, whether they deserve it or not.

more games is good, but I thnk it's important for all teams to be in all games
Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.

It's a balancing act. I'd love to do six man teams in six games, but I worry about making people follow six games. Four seems like a lot as it is. But just Four games was too few. The first team mafia ended with an eight way tie for first with 2 wins a piece. That felt unsatisying.

Nominate Regfan and Empire for still drawing scum after making our life miserable and hoarding all our tokens to try to influence their alignment.
