At a guess, I'd say the script it's using to resize didn't get transferred over, or enabled. I'll see if I can learn anything more, this looks like a fairly common problem. We need to upgrade MediaWiki anyway...

Sorry for the necro, but I've been having this problem too. Any news on when this is going to be fixed?

Try uploading your avatar directly onto the wiki as a separate file and then adding that into your userbox independently.
Check out my wiki to see what I mean (yes, I've done it a little differently, but in theory, it should work).
