Mini 149: Open Role Mafia - Game Over

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Dec 21, 2004 9:00 am

Status: Stick a fork in us. Thanks for playing everybody.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Open Role Mafia.

I've been thinking that some roles, from a thematic perspective, don't really make sense to be hidden. Who ever heard of an undercover mayor or doctor? This game is designed to be more interesting and more realistic by giving everyone a role that is out in the open, while some people have a second, perhaps more sinister role.

Generic intro: Evil has found its way to the humble town of Humbleton - Humble townsfolk have been found dead each morning and something has to be done before its too late. The town takes matters into its own hands and will lynch one person per day until the killings end.

Players Alive:
HairyMezican the Sheriff, just a sheriff.
Jaguar the Butcher, townsperson.

Players Dead:
zedmango the Nurse, just a nurse, stabbed and shot on night 1.
Malaprop the Innkeeper, townsperson, hanged on day 1.
mathcam (replacing mlaker) the tailor, vigilante, shot on night 2.
mole the deputy, mafia scum, stabbed on night 2.
Stewie the Priest, mafia scum, hanged on day 2.
MeMe the Actress, undercover cop, modkilled day 2.
vikingfan (replacing Dourgrim) the Doctor, just a doctor shot on night 3.
Cubsfan4ever the Grocer, serial killer, hanged on day 3.
Xanthe the Baker, guardian angel, departed night 4.
lazarusmoth the Mayor, mafia scum, hanged on day 4.

The Roles:

lazarusmoth was the Mayor
- Once per day, during the day, lazarusmoth could pardon a player by posting
pardon: name
, bolded, in the thread. The pardoned player could not be lynched that day and the pardon may not be rescinded. The mayor could not pardon himself.

vikingfan (replacing Dourgrim) was the Doctor
- Each night vikingfan could select a player to be immune to being killed that night. He may choose to protect himself but never for two consecutive nights.

zedmango was the Nurse
- If vikingfan dies, zedmango would have become the new doctor.

HairyMezican is the Sheriff
- Once per night HairyMezican may select a player, and I will tell him whether that person is evil.

mole was the Deputy
- If HairyMezican dies, mole would have become the new Sheriff.
Both the sheriff and the deputy are guaranteed to be sane and there are no roles that are immune to their investigations

Stewie was the Priest
- To avoid bloodguilt, Stewie would never cast the final lynching vote on somebody.

MeMe was the Actress
- MeMe was busy rehearsing her lines all day could only be bothered to vote for somebody if it is the final vote required.

Xanthe was the Baker
and had no special abilities.

Jaguar is the Butcher
and has no special abilities.

Cubsfan4ever (aka Cubsfan4life) was the Grocer
and had no special abilities.

Malaprop was the Innkeeper
and had no special abilities.

mathcam (replacing mlaker) was the Tailor
and had no special abilities.

The Rules:

Please remember that this is a game. Try your hardest but keep it fun.
Please bold your votes and unvotes. If a vote is not bolded it will not be counted.
Please unvote. If you do not unvote, your new vote will still count but I will be annoyed.
Inactivity will get you replaced, but not before a warning. If you are going to be away for more than 48 hours please say so
in thread
.
No posting in twilight
, except to point out that it is twilight.
No posting after you're dead.
Not even Bah. Else I will modkill you. Er, wait...
No talking about the game outside of the thread, except as your roles allow.
Players may vote no-lynch. Two consecutive days and nights with no deaths will cause the game to end as a draw between all parties who have at least one player alive.
If conversation slows, I will impose a deadline. This deadline may or may not be retractable, according to my whim.
A full majority will be needed for a lynch, deadline or not. If no majority has been reached when a deadline comes to pass, no lynch will occur.
Players who are eliminated from this game will not be able to rejoin as a replacement. Go find another game where you won't have a conflict of interest. You're not wanted here.
Please be respectful to your moderator. You have to because it is in the rules. See?

The constant killings in Humbleton have really put a damper on the holiday spirit. The townspeople awake this morning, hopeful that their prayers for yuletide peace have been answered. But alas, no. As they gather in the town square, they see that zedmango, the nurse, is missing. They find him in his home, gruesomely stabbed with multiple knife wounds, and with a bullet to the head to boot. There is nothing amiss in his home or possessions. It would appear that he was just the humble town nurse.

Thus begins day one. The game is on. Get posting.

11 players alive. 6 votes needed to lynch.

Sorry MeMe, but as the actress you cannot vote except as a lynching vote. The vote will be disregarded. Consider yourself warned, and stuff.

And Cubsfan -- the director can tell me what to do (within reason, of course), but I'll be damned if I let a two-bit seller of canned goods boss me around.

I'd FOS you if I didn't have a mani/pedi to get to.

Does anyone else have the feeling that our cops/docs are marked for death? No way to hide means we'll lose them about as fast as we have nights.

I'm not sure I understand this setup, seems like we've got the short end of the stick. The town has a backup cop (and used to have a backup doc), but it also has two players with voting restrictions and one maybe-but-not-probably-useful lynch blocker.

And, c'mon, we've got a butcher and baker but no candlestick maker?

(I'm travelling a bit until Jan 3rd. I don't need a replacement, just wanted to mention I won't be able to post quite every single day.)

Since I am marked for death, should I reveal the results of my investigation immediately?

Also, I am hoping that we also have a mason guild here, and that I am not investigating them.

Well, apparently you've got an innocent (if you think you may have investigated a mason) -- so
don't
reveal him/her or you'll mark them for death as well!

Some of the apparently pro-town power roles must surely be scum? I'm still trying to figure out how this would work.

There are 2 things that make me think that we may have a mason group. The way the first message is posted, it says "some people have a second, perhaps more sinister role." Perhaps more sinsiter, perhaps not, right? The second thing that makes me think we may have a mason group is the fact that the setup really seems to favor the mafia. All of the pro-town roles are out in the open, but all of the anti-town roles are hidden?

All I know from my investigation is that the person I investigated is innocent. Do we have enough people marked for death that adding another innocent won't really matter? If I die tonight, will we want 2 investigations to go to waste?

I have to say, if I were mafia I'd be pretty confused too, since I would wonder if the doc can protect himself (hint to dour: don't tell  )

I'm assuming that anyone could be mafia. My guess is that Speedy distributed the roles first, and then distributed the motives (kinda like Cam did in Quantum -- not sure if he did it again afterwards), so anyone could be mafia, even our powerful town roles, such as cop and doc. It'd be pretty lame if we could rule them out just because they have a powerful role.

And HM, don't reveal. While you are not marked for death for sure (Read first sentence of this post) you would be marking them for death.

Hello, all!

Your friendly neighborhood Doctor wishes you all a very happy holiday season... well, except for the uber-baddies infesting our fair Town, in which case I say to thee: booooooo!

:)

No vote at this time... I hate random Day One nonsense.

That's not true. There is the fact that the doc may be able to protect himself, the fact that one of those 3 roles can be mafia, and the fact that the mafia might let one of you live to make it look like s/he's mafia, when s/he's really not.

*press conference*

Welcome to the town. I'm Lazarusmoth, your distinguished mayor. And I just want you to know that I will use my powers for pardoning very rarely and only in extremely-contested cases. It's a powerful double-edged responsibility but I shall strive to bear the burden.

I'm not sure how the doc or the sheriff could be mafia. Wouldn't command of such powerful roles, when placed in mafia hands, mean such an unbalanced game? I hope that we could discuss this issue:

Can anyone be mafia in this setup or are there roles we can be fairly sure aren't mafia?
There are so many questions I'd like to ask, but we are left watching the checkered board. Our eyes pass over the symmetry. I wish it were possible to achieve such mimicry, to move our pieces in peace ├óÔé¼ÔÇ£ my bishops to church, your wild horses to stable.

Don't you think that if there are roles that could not be mafia, the game would be quite boring? I'm confortable assuming that role and motive were assigned independly.
