chose the DireWolf20 5.1.1 pack on the left.

yes there is, in an yserver, an yfile starting with the name "world" (FTB server may be different and start witth the seed number, we'll see once multicraft is back up)

download those to your hearts content, and have M allow FTP read-only access to as many users as want to download them, and i can read-only access a few peopel to FTB to allow anyone to manually back up worlds that are important to them. This should in fact relieve 90% of rob's qualms with FTB, the age deletion no longer becomes a problem if it is self-backed up in addition to anything I do, every user can back up what they do after every time they log in, and never lose any work.

I like blake's idea, and that is the main reason I want bukkit, With LWC we can add in user-defined blocks and we can make Nuclear Reactors lwcable, machines, thaumcraft goodies, ANYTHING.

@ everyone, "whats going on" we're just about 100% finished with all server-maintenance, then I will work some multicraft magic on the FTB server so expect downtime while i instal shit, then we should be back up by later tonight.

as long as we instal it from the start, bukkit shouldn't fuck up our server with this way of instaling it. there are very many other FTB server running all of the different modpacks with bukkit successfully, there should be no problem in getting ours to either.

@Maru: when is server consolidation likely to happen? Registered - now how do I actually perform a back-up? I'd like to keep one a month just in case.

once you have read-FTP access, you will see servers on the server list you have access to, you click the server name go to files on the left, FTP, grab those details (password is safe as login) and use a program like FileZilla to get the files from the server to your computer.

Another thing I've come across is sites mentioning to disable saving during file transfer or I could end up with a corrupted backup. The recommended procedure is /save all, /save off, do backup, /save on - I don't think its a very good idea for me or anyone other than ops to be able to turn saving on and off for obvious reasons, just pointing out that this may limit the actual benefit to any of this manual saving. If there was a save between 9:07 and 9:15 PM est while I was copying the files, it might not be possible to use them to restore anything anyways. idk, I'm not entirely sure how it all works. I would guess it'd be ideal to copy files when no one is on the server (shouldn't be any saves then right?) which I can see from the CP, but then that limits when I can actually do the backups anyways. Just food for thought.

The worst thing u can think of happening is that the chunks in use during your backup get corrupted. So if you ask everyone to log out first it should be fine

the number is based on the server number. The FTB server is server number nine, therefor when accessing FTB files, you will login with:
IP and port in the FTB server FTP settings
username.9
password.

the MS (was) 2 last i checked, so it would be username.2 and the ip it gives (I think it is locating at a different IP access as well)

shittyness was not nearly as prevalent on 5.1.1. part of 5.2 is xycraft. to go back to 5.1.1 we have to get rid of new xycraft stuff as well as anything ELSE that is new.

Also: I chose the location of my base because it is ridiculously pretty, overlooking a river in an Autumn Forest biome. I haven't built anything overground yet because I want to make sure I get it right when I do build (except that I've laid out where I want to put my farms to make sure they won't ruin the view -- but I still might move them underground and replant that area with Autumn Forest trees.)

Basically what I'm saying is that a railway line is unlikely to be sympathetic to the landscape, so if you want to build one up to my place, perhaps come round the back where it borders onto a Savannah biome and leave the Autumn Forest untouched. Alternatively, just leave me out of it for now, and I'll link myself into the railway network at a later date.

1. I am doing my absolute best to not touch the landscape in any way, and if you look at the (unfinished) line leading from M's to izak and further it takes some crazy paths because of it.
2. I don't yet have a waypoint at your location so idk where you live.
3 I can leave you to connect to it at some later point if you want.

THATS how all of the railroad was going to look like. things like this, beautifully built. and then along the route to far away places he had ideas for like little abandoned mining settlements on the side of a mountain with a cart on a redpower circuit going around a loop of track back and forth.

So yes, when I made it it looked ugly, because I have 0 creative sense and everything I have ever made relatively decent in minecraft has been a copy or a collaboration of a bunch of other designs, so of course my basic concept looked ugly as fuck. I was going to get clammy to make it all look good.

I like the idea of a rail system and it still is one of my goals to implement one, it just takes so much resource-gathering just to get started with railcraft, and I wanted to start with something I could get into quicker. The bridge looks very nice and I hope the entire rail system can eventually look that nice. I agree with using more railcraft structures rather than just laying rails on the ground. My road to claus isn't even the most efficient road but I tried my best to make it look good. I'm still very happy with my coastal highway and my little bridge to my house. The rail line doesn't necessarily need to follow the road. It'd probably be more interesting if it followed a different path. In my own opinion, rails should be longer straighter sections without much change in elevation (i.e. bridges and tunnels) where as roads should be constructed to follow the terrain, curvy and up and down where appropriate. That is my one piece of constructive criticism with the rails I saw is that they just seemed to be laid down as a road rather than a rail. In my humble opinion.

well my new system is a subway at y=30, so no more changes in elevation.

How is it thermal expansion that's causing the problems? I've been using TE heavily since day one with no problems. At the weekend I was the only one on the server for a lot of the time and using TE heavily with no lagging and no crashes at all. It's only when other people came on the server that it started to slow down and get crashy.

nope we fixed it, it was thermal expansion, one of the tesseracts fucked up and created a ghost block whatever that is that when attempting to interact with it would crash server.

Last attempt was going to be to connect the tesseract directly to the valve and hope that would work but I already shut down and didn't feel like waiting to boot FTB back up.

Also I was wondering M, does the tesseract still give me steam if nobody is by your steam tank to keep the chunks loaded there?

This is why I was afraid to branch out from vanilla so much to learn its overwhelming. I'm pretty sure klaz accomplished more in the first hour of the server than I've accomplished the whole time since I've joined.

3) If your power usage is ever < your power production, Conductive Pipes will eventually contain the energy in a backlog and explode. As Claus says, Redstone Energy Conduits will not do this, and I believe they also stop drawing power from Redstone Energy Cells when there's nothing requesting power, but that could only be for Thermal Expansion machines.

If you ever think your MJ production will surpass your usage, you should look into the process of building Redstone Energy Cells. They are similar to the IndustrialCraft BatBox/MFE/MFSU except they contain Minecraft Joules and can output it when requested or what triggered. If you want a tutorial on Redstone Energy Cells, you could ask Oso, or build an Induction Smelter, Magma Crucible, and Liquid Transposer - all Thermal Expansion machines, the same you'd use to build a Tesseract - then come find me.

P-Edit: dappy, don't confuse the poor chap now. I think we're the only two on-server who EVER use Gates.

I understand logic gates. (A: thats what i learned at school for 6 weeks, B: I use for simple redstone machines, C: they're simple as fuck if you know binary and binary logic. Klaz your crash counter is pretty cool, but it appears to be counting server resets which are set to auto-happen every 3 hours, with a 2-minute prior warning, so it'll be off by a number that grows by 8 every day (we don't really crash all that often any more, the crashing is all client-side, where it knocks off every client then takes a minute and lets you keep playing, but the server itself doesn't actually crash. So TBH this counter will never work, because it won't read the client-kicking crashes as server still persists, and it WILL count planned restarts)

I'm up to just over 244 buckets of biomass in my xycraft tank now 244,140 millibuckets to be exact. My fermenter is running off of a biogas engine now, as is my trio of bee-processing machines. My brain has a bit of an internal conflict regarding using biomass to create biomass - conservation of energy, etc... whatever, its minecraft physics

One thing I need now is a renewable lava source. Reason is that each time I want to turn a biogas engine on, I need to use a little bit of lava. I think each engine has an internal tank of 20 buckets, and from what I can tell each time I start the engine cold I need to use 1/10 of a bucket of lava. So if I fill each machine with lava, it looks as if I can start them cold 200 times each. Thats pretty reasonable maintenance - make 40 buckets of lava, then don't worry about it until my engines start to run low then go make another batch.

Magma Crucible turning netherrack into lava occasionally?

pump in the nether to EnderTank, Tesseract, or a crazy contraption of auto-canning of the lava then pushing it into an enderchest and pulling it out and uncanning at the other end (what i did before i learned of tesseracts and endertanks weren't yet made)

FiOS is a fiber thing. Kinda like ATT Uverse, only (UA will correct me if I'm wrong) FiOS takes the fiber all the way to your house, while uverse takes the fiber to a neighborhood node and then runs regular copper lines to houses from there.

That seems extremely counterproductive of them. That means they'd have to build a convertor of electric signal to light signal, as well as a multiplexer, at a local location for the neighborhood. well I guess if they fibre'd all the way to the house they'd still have to multiplex it, just they'd be multiplexing the digital, light signal rather than multiplexing the digital electric signal, and they'd have to build a convertor at every house, because most people don't use fibre lines in their house to hook things up...

You have to download it from the craftbukkit site, turn the server off, place it in your Base directory through FTP (FileZilla is what I use), and then make sure its name matches the name in the jar name box on your control panel page, by changing either one of them.

then save, and restart

then it never took off.

That was the third attempt at my first server, and where i learned most of my skills for any adminy type shit i know now.

On Modded Minecraft:

As most of you may have gathered from OPs talking to each other, chat around the subject in IRC, or from following recent FTB news, mods for minecraft often break with big version changes to Minecraft (I'm talking like X.____ or __.X.__ changes not things like 1.4.3-->1.4.5 etc). Or mod authors like to re-write their mods to make the code less clunky and less intensive on machines (YAY!), or to better add new features (I'm looking at things Like Buildcraft1-->Buildcraft2-->Buildcraft3, IndustrialCraft1-->IndustrialCraft2, ExtraBiomesXL1-->ExtraBiomesXL2-->ExtraBiomesXL3-->EBXL4, EE1-->EE2-->EE3, Thaum1-->Thaum2-->Thaum3 etc) that make the new version incompatible with the old version, and usually come with warnings like "Start a NEW WORLD to play this NEW VERSION". Or big-name mods that are THE cornerstone of a server get abandoned (Aether1, etc.).

What does this mean? It means lots of freaking restarting! (right rob13?

) And NOBODY likes to restart every other week because mojang released their new version of their game (to please those trigger-happy "I WANT NEW CONTENT" 12yr olds), causing half the issues. Before Minecraft 1.3/1.4 this wasn't a problem. Making modded SERVERS was too hard, as the server software was a COMPLETELY different engine than the client. Meaning to make mods server-compatible they had to make both a multiplayer and a single player version. Forge/ModLoaderMP we not widely used, so each mod bad Base Class Edits, making mods incompatible with each other, and you'd be lucky to find 4 inter-compatible mods. It was hard to install mods, make all configs and versions match, and successfully connect to servers (FTB and TechnicLauncher and MultiCraft and MagicLauncher weren't yet made, or weren't yet widely used). So nobody cared that mods almost always borked multiplayer worlds, because when you played mods, you played in single player.

With the invent of things like MASSIVE Mod-Author-Approved (I'm looking at you TEKKIT and your large amount of community-hate) modpacks like Feed The Beast, that made Server-Instances of the modpacks widely available instead of for single private server use only; the introduction of Minecraft 1.4 which turned single player unto a multiplayer server with a single player wrapper, making for universal mods; and the exponential boom in the use of a collaborative mod project like Forge that seamlessly integrates mods together, modpacks have become the next big thing in minecraft. And this poses an issue, because now when a modpack breaks with every monthly, big-change, world-eating update Minecraft produces, MASSIVE numbers of servers are thrown into the abyss or having to chose between keeping up-2-sdate with the new mods and features, or keeping their worlds.

ell, with 1.5/1.6 updates just around the corner its time for us to decide our fates too. Do we want to keep up-to-date with new features of minecraft, and lose our world every month or two? Or do we want to build a persistent, stable world, and stick to a single version of minecraft for 6-9 months at a time, and not worry about mod updates? We have to decide how to continue with how popular the modded server has become.

So I want you all to go vote in the poll, which is NOT INDICATIVE OF ANYTHING, i just want your general opinions, would you prefer updates or map stability, if you had to pick?
Don't try to offer me solutions to the issue, I just want a vote in the poll. Past that, feel free to discuss, but don't try to circumvent the problem or find ways around it. The problem exists, and will continue to exist until well after minecraft introduces a Mod API (Bukkit still breaks a lot of plugins every few updates and that essentially what the Mod API will become).

inb4 someone suggest we make 2 servers and do one of each: A: even IF I could afford to make a second income-less modded server with the same ram this one eats up, or B: could acquire the donations equal to the cost of the FTB server if I were to not own the hosting company behind it; I would NOT splinter the community like that. so don't suggest it. I can't afford the $75 a month worth of RAM, and even if I could, it would kill us.

TLDR:
If you had to pick, would you prefer stable world and not updating minecraft with every update, or updating every time, and have to restart the world every month or two?

For the record I think this is wrong. If we're going to accept the fact that we're likely to restart on a semi-regular basis, people should at least be allowed to bring SOME stuff over. As others have said in the past, the initial resource grind gets VERY dull after a while.

and if we ever have to restart, it will be determined then and there by the admin group what we do. I said just assume worst-case-scenario, because that way you're not disappointing.

So this goes nowhere near as much info as everyone has been near BEGGING for this past month or tow, nor does it go anywhere NEAR the info the mods have already discussed/agreed/disagreed/conferred on/etc. This is just one thing that was one guarantee, set-in-stone, tidbit I thought you might all enjoy knowing. It is impossible to coordinate hundreds of individual people working towards individual milestones and goals irregardless of the other 99 with individual lives, problems, and unforeseen circumstances. Mainly, mojang pretty much fucks everyone over ever time they release a minecraft update.

So I can not promise anything definite.

BUT, I will say that you can all expect NOTHING to happen to the server ANY earlier than July 4th. Later, totally possible. Earlier? Not likely at all. There is a timetable for you to all count on/look for.

It had broken armor and UUM (which i absolutely hate, no players should be unkillable by OPs, and UUM should not exist -smite dav-), it update slower than a snail (still has a published most-recent RELEASE FOR 1.4.5 FROM LAST DECEMBER/NOVEMBER), it generally causes lots of issues server side (BLAKE BLOWS UP NUKES, I LIKE TO EXPLODE 20 NUKES AT A TIME TO MAKE A CRATER IN THE OCEAN AND CRASH THE SERVER, etc), plus as stated above, you all need to broaden your horizons. Dav is bored because he only cares about ic2.

Minions - Wanted, was playtested, was shitty compared to Thaum minions, trust me, none of you want this.

PortalGun - We all wanted the music, the guns and boots are broken, and cause massive strain on server. end of story?

RP2 - SEE: Flaky mod devs who don't update for 9+ months at a time.

Ruins - Spammy, nothing really cool added

Soul Shards - KEEP IN MIND WE CONVINCED IZAK AND KLAZ THIS WAS ACCEPTABLE, WE MUST HAVE GOOD REASONS. The only way this was being added was with rules such as the following: If you are caught capturing spawners, you are banned. If you are caught sharing soul shards with other users, and not using exclusively for yourself, you are banned. If you make a tier5 and turn it on without explicit admin approval every time you turn it on, you are banned. Etc. Do you guys still really want it, since the only person who did enough modkilling to use it was klaz? Go make a diamond sword inbue it with 10000000 Tinkers Construct add-ons, and return to how vanilla was played. KILL SOME DAMN MOBS.

Steve's Carts - Nobody wanted this, so we hired blake to defend it to us since he uses it more than anyone else..

The vote with last two weeks, and needs a 66% majority for yes to win.

Also, I'd love to obey Maru's directive of no public discussion about anything (because what better way to control the masses), but I was banned from the IRC channel for getting angry at M for calling me names like a 2-year-old. Specifically, he called me a "pretentious twat". Earlier today, before the announcement of IC2 being taken out, he suggested I have psychological problems because I prefer to start with IC2, the mod I know best, in any modded server.
