Don't know what my actual BMI is probably lower than that since I -do- have a good amount of muscle and almost no fat anywhere on my body. If I'm shirtless people will definitely know I work out. But then again I have a calcium deficiency and don't have much bone density so that might cancel it out. I don't actually look like a skeleton or anything, just really lean and slender. Most people are surprised when I tell them my weight.

I'm calling bullshit. 18 BMI? There's no way you work out. It's more likely that you are super skinny with a little bit of (natural) muscle, so you look really cut. You probably have ab definition too and think that your abs/core is strong because of that. The problem with that build is that you are weak and skinny and your abs/core are actually weak.

Zoraster, I'm just saying that people shouldn't take it to heart much at all. If you really care about your bodyfat then you should just get measurements done. Also scales are quite inaccurate for most people. Using BMI as your measurment of how healthy you are is potentially dangerous.

That said, there's tons of misconceptions and things people do wrong when trying to get in shape, so it's not like not emphasizing bmi will save people or whatever.

Tazaro: That's like a six foot 130 pound person. I know what those people look like, I have friends around there. They don't work out a lot. And the ones that do are quickly going past that. He said that he works out and seems to imply he has been for quite some time. If we go with the six foot 130 thing, people who are that slim gain 1-2 pounds a week if they work out/eat correctly. I think he has low fat (skinny) and has natural muscle definition.

Well, a very serious problem in places like the US is that fat and unhealthy becomes normalized. People look around them and see that they're skinnier than many of the people they see, and they assume they're healthy or at worst a little overweight. For men, it's been found that when friends gain weight, it's more likely to make their friends gain weight. The value of BMI is that it's simple to use, so at least it can make someone reevaluate -- am I REALLY a bulky athlete?

One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

And you can kindly shut it, Junpei. I don't currently work out, but I was once a dancer, a swimmer, went to the gym, walked pretty much everywhere, and had a 17 BMI.

I know lots of distance runners around there, and their legs and core are strong (even if their upper body is weak) so you should probably stop talking.

Just FYI: BMI doesn't take into account both bone and muscle mass, so some of the heafter athletes often are "overweight" according to BMI. You'd wouldn't rely just that for a gauge for health, but for this survey it's simple enough for the image.

I think I should be more disturbed than I am about how there are more "well-fed" North Koreans than me.

All the way down at the bottom for me. I wouldn't have it any other way.
