The Tenements

This story takes place out on a planet that has no official name, a planet off the grid. Different names can be heard depending on what local you are talking to. Sometimes I think the multitude of languages here outnumber the population of this large mining colony.

A certain metal is found here, integral to the construction of space crafts. I have trouble remembering what it's called. I know it's one of the dozens of -iums that make up the composite material of the hull. The Hathor corporation hired me to count numbers, not to remember names, or at least that's what I thought at the time.

Me getting abruptly fired, kicked out of the corporate housing, is the start of this tale.

I found myself staring at the number 7 and the letter B carved in a wooden door, no belongings, a small amount of money and no idea what to do. Inside was a single room with a bed tucked in the corner and a window overlooking the rail system.

As I stared out the window contemplating this new life, there was a quiet knocking. I ignored it at first, thinking the sound was further down, meant for someone else. The source of the knock belonged to a tiny woman who must've been thrice my age, judging by the wrinkles.

She stopped by to welcome me to the community. While I was too wrapped up in my own problems to appreciate the gesture, there was a sense of comfort in the greeting. The tiny woman reminded me of my own grandma, something in the mannerisms.

Before long I was following the frail woman down the stairs leading to the main square. I was expected to participate in a ceremony of sorts known as the election ritual. My curiosity was piqued, having heard rumors of these practices.

To my horror, I learned a daily sacrifice was chosen for the good of the community. A superstitious need to answer for recent disturbing occurrences.

Day One will start when 11 out of 13 have confirmed. Since it is the weekend, you have until monday to confirm before I start looking for any replacements.
