Marathon Thread Permanented

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Mar 27, 2007 4:47 pm

I love the idea of the marathon thread staying there...

Just the idea that we could run a quick pickup game like this as long as we kept the length of the game under 24 hours sounds awesome.....

Seems better suited to scumchat, frankly, on ordinary days. The forum isn't really designed for speed games, you run into collisions/simulposts, and trying to organize sufficient people to play in a 24h game when people aren't actually rearranging their sleep schedules around a special event is difficult, to say the least.

I like IH's idea. In fact I wanted it to stay before he posted it. (I posted it first.)

Also it's good for those who aren't playing today.

It'd be nice to have the option. Maybe just open it for a day every couple of weeks. I think it grow into disuse fairly quickly otherwise.

It could work as a special monthly event, but, other than that, this is what ScumChat is for.

I would like the forum to stay because it archives the games of a historical event (mafiascum-wise that is). Moving them to other forums will save them, but makes it harder to track them down.

And it always leaves the option open to do it again if there is something to celebrate.

I'm starting to shift my mind in favor of keeping the Marathon Day forum games separate. We've already got like 9 games run/moving in about 10 hours...will be impressive to show new people that we CAN move fast when we want to. ;)

Maybe a week out of every month then.

It would grow into disuse if it was open all the time, but once a month I think it would stay active.

One week just so everyone can coordinate when they want to play and such.

Just some way to keep them open and going.... because it's a good medium between scumchat and slow forum games.

I'd say one day of the month. A week is too much. Another option would be once a year or once every six months, I think.

MafiaScum's birthday every year might be cool, provided the eventual load on the site for the marathon day activities doesn't seem too high.

I think once a week in a month would be better because if it's on the birthday, I'm not going to play until it hits a weekend. I'm too busy, and I don't stay here on weekdays.

Edit: Also it would be good to keep open until the weekend for this time at least, so people like me who didn't play today don't miss out on all of the fun.

I liked it, but there's no way in hell I'm doing this once a month.

Simple economics dictate that once you increase the quantity of an item, the marginal utility of every next item will decrease.

Let's keep stuff like this special.

Indeed. This is something I will certainly consider doing again someday (not before our hosting issues are resolved, for sure), but there's no way it will happen more than once or twice a year. If nothing else, it would take away from the normal (much slower) forum games, which is what we do best.

Hopefully those that participated (or read some of it and wanted to participate) will find their way to scumchat, if they don't frequent it already.

Designated AIM chatroom... we play mafia games from time to time, talk about forum-related stuff, and (of course) go completely off-topic and talk about tons of random/crazy different things.

I'd like it maybe once a year. We could probably try to schedule it closer to weekend times so that more people can participate and have fun, but like others have said, do it too often and it'll lose it's specialness and essentially suck.

The site link doesn't work for me. I downloaded Trillian eventually (like the third thing I tried).

Do you have AOL Instant Messenger installed? (or something like it, like Trillian)

Try going to the program instead, open a chatroom, and put in the name 'scumchat' (no quotes). A few people have had trouble getting in and need to be invited, but if you'll post your AIM id I'm sure someone will oblige.

Yeah, the link only works in IE. If you IM me at GlorkTheInvader (and I'm around), I'll give you an invite.

Alternatively, you can manually enter the chatroom: Enter "scumchat" as the name and make sure the exchange is set to 5. (The default, at least for Gaim, is 4.) Click the "Go Chat" (or equivalent) button, and voila. You should be good to go.
