Ever since I first found out about these games on MTGsalvation I've been intrigued about making one, I've had a few ideas that are more standard, but I wanted to see if anyone thought this one (which is kinda out there..) has merit.

I call it sealed deck mafia - losely basing it on a sealed deck game of magic the gathering.

I created 34 different "role cards" split into 3 basic rarities. Certain cards, like 1-shot cop, are common. Certain cards, like watcher, are uncommon. Certain cards, like vig, are rare. There's also cards like Mafia, Cult, and SK - which are a different rarity - each of these cards would be assigned separately and only 1 to each of the right balance of people.

The rest of the role cards (3 of each common, 2 of each uncommon, 1 of each rare) would be "shuffled and dealt" secretly to each of the players. Each person would have a "deck" of 3 cards. Non-town roles would only have 2 "cards" since they would have their own role card.

Each night every person gets one action, and each day every person gets one action. You can use a card for your action, or you can draw a card for your action. Some cards go away after they are used (most common cards) some cards stay and can be used multiple times (on different nights or days).

I'm not sure yet if I would want to make it so each person gets 1 common, 1 uncommon and 1 rare, or if I should make it more up to chance.. but I think I have all the cards figured out :-)

I know I have to run other games before I can run a crazy game like this - but what do people think of the concept?

you should have 36 cards, but the idea I like.

36 cards total. That way, you can run it as a mini and give everyone three cards!

Not if any kind of cop is common. Cop-vig should be quite rare, it's too unbalancing.

The one-shot cop would be useless if it ended up in a mafia player's deck. Unless they can use it AND make their NK in the same Night, and just hope they find a Townie power role. Sounds like an interesting variant nonetheless. Just keep in mind that either side could end up with a certain card and how they could use it. You also need to devise a way to keep people from getting more than one role card. Or even more interesting, devise a formula for players with multiple roles. Mafia + Vig = Traitor Mafia (dunno about that though, seems pretty darn powerful) Double Mafia = Godfather. Something like that. Like I said, it sounds fun and interesting, but I think it needs a lot of planning on the Mod's part. Good luck!

Huh. That sounds pretty interesting, but to be frank it doesn't sound like mafia. More like a CCG involving mafia elements.

Still, I would like to try.

Yeah, I know, I play much more MW mafia than online, we use looney lab's AYAW cards. I'm making my own, custom cards, though. :mrgreen: possibly I'll upload soon, but they have very specific themes, may not be useful.

To my understanding, this version is where you get role cards a la M:TG. I could have three abilities to take and use.

Is this just like, you get dealt a card with your role?

InsaniMafia had aliens as mafia members, an angelfish named Angie as doc, a porpoise named Blip as cop (he's psychic, silly!) a shark, Gash, as vig, and a new role, Amp, a vote blocker. They shock someone during the night and during the day that person may talk but not vote. It was a random role, IMO.

Most of it makes more sense if you know IQD.
