Actually, on the matter of introducing players to the game: vanillas are quite fine. Muddying what the game is about just confuses things, and I think you might find that players are more interested in finding out not only the mafia, but also the select power roles. It's only after they've played a few games when they decide whether they like being vanilla or powered, imo.
