This can't be considered accurate.
I've played 2 newbie games (D1, N4), got killed N1 in the only main game I've played and replaced out D1 in the 2nd main I joined due to work commitments.
I suck at this and should probably be considered a noob. There is nothing SE about me.
Can I request a difficulty level change ?

Sorry, but you're only a newbie if you have fewer than two completed games. But don't worry, you don't need to be particularly skilled at Mafia to be an SE. 
The IC is there to explain the game to newbies if necessary, so there's no expectation that you do anything beyond play as usual. We just need to give priority to people who are in their very first games onsite.
Also, there's no change in difficulty--every slot has an equal chance of drawing town or scum. You just get a shiny (SE) beside your name in the player list!
