A flash of steel announces the presence of his quarry.

Next contest I'm planning on entering a 1969 song which starts off as quiet and dark and mysterious and gradually transforms into a much louder song.

Is it The Summer of 1969 by Bryan Adams?

Because that'd possibly get a 12 from me.

That's a 1984 song though

I mean, it's a game, although you're probably right about me worrying too much about the results.
I sorta go half-and-half - generally, I'll choose which artist I feel like entering first, then enter my favourite song by them that isn't really well-known, so I'm conciously entering a good song, but because I like it rather than because I think others will like it.

In post 139, KuroiXHF wrote:To be honest, I'm having a difficult time trying to find the kind of music that people here like to listen to.

I started with a Within Temptation song and someone said that it reminds them of Nightwish (which they know, and I love) but worse. So I thought that I should try a more epic and less specific genre, so I tried Zack Hemsey and that did even worse. Now I tried a completely different route - a silly band, but with an alternate blend of guitar and brass instruments, and people aren't liking that.

So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm looking for music for next contest and I'm probably going with a metal band. But I feel like I'm not hitting the bar.
The way I understood this contest to be set up was that we submit songs we love, from any era and genre. In doing so we at least introduce some artists that we might not otherwise be introduced to. Don't pander to the audience, introduce them to your favorite song, or shit just one that spoke to you for a moment. Let others find what you did, or something different, or nothing. That's the beauty of music. What you like isn't the same as anyone else, or for the same exact reasons even.

Also to be fair there is an element of chance to how well your song will do, in terms of the strength of other songs in the contest and which people made it into the contest (as they're more likely to vote).

Not to mention you really can't predict what others think - for example, I was not expecting For a Thousand Mothers in SC95 to do as well as it did, but I expected Beetlebum in the last contest to do better than it did. Imo, you should enter this contest with the fun of seeing others' views of the song, positive or negative, and hearing others' tastes, with actually winning not being your biggest motivation.

I heard my song on an episode of Empire, don't judge me, and it just instantly invoked a certain response in me. I don't want to sound hoaky, but it spoke to me in a way. Look up the lyrics and follow along with the message and the intensity, changes everything.

DAV, right on with the last part of your post. Good or bad I've loved reading about how people took my song. I know it's all based on personal preference, but it's cool to see what others got out of a song like that.

what genre would you describe your song as?

i mean realistically i should just enter the pop artist. i found her tangentially off of a song someone entered in song contest 89 but i figured someone else would eventually enter her and im a little surprised it hasnt happened.

Zero accessibility is meaningless, though, people submitted these songs for a reason most of the time. Even the one time I was trolling I picked a song I really like that I knew a lot of people didn't. People should submit what they want, they either get points or they don't.

I also wish whomever submitted Death Cab picked pretty much any other song by them :(

Albania - weird vocals. I don't dislike this.
Central African Republic - Ok, good enough.
Belize - This was pretty cool.
Uruguay - Eh, ok. Sounds hip and modern.
Hungary - Ehhh.
Ecuador - Fitting name, it really sounds like a dog is singing.
Spain - Hm, ok. It's a broadcast party.
Benin - Ok.
Finland - Ok.
Italy - I liked the parts I heard, except for the vocals.
Hong Kong - Ah, it's this song.
Iceland - I like the instrumental.
Kazakhstan - Is ok.
Canada - It's a jazzy-loungy version of that Pocahontas song, color me unimpressed. It's very listenable though.
Latvia - There's a trashy
je ne sais quoi
quality to this song, it's almost in that weird Schrödinger's cat place where it's neither great nor terrible so it's both. I say almost because it's not good enough to be great and it's not bad enough to be terrible but it's close to being either.
Cote d'Ivoire - Awful sound quality. Spanish subtitles are a nice touch. But I'm not a fan of this... (GLORIOUS BREAK!) Oh wait it's on Spotify, sounds like a different song. Better, but still not a fan.
The Principality of Sealand - Meh.
Azerbaijan - OK.
USA - Meh.
Philippines - It's just another k-pop song. The only reason I like these entries is for the videos, they're always so cool.
Republic of Kugelmugel - Ok.
Japan - It's nice enough.
Macedonia - Ok. Nice video.
Mali - Aaahhhh, drums, feels so good. Pretty nice.
Greece - Nice enough.

It was tough picking the last five spots, there were a lot of "ok" songs, which I didn't love but didn't dislike either.

Albania -- the YouTube description for this video describes it as "One of the best song about one of the best album of one of the best ambient-cold wave band all over the world". I can't judge whether it's truly the best song in that particular category, but I appreciate the enthusiasm on YouTube user BlackRadio's part.
Central African Republic -- this makes me feel weirdly... sentimental? sentimental for something that doesn't exist. the vocals aren't very great but I will excuse them because all the rest of it is really good
Belize -- good shit op
Uruguay -- this is... just okay. it is alright. I will not listen to it again. I do not mind having listened to it once.
Hungary -- the bit in the video with the angel statue crying a tear of blood was a bit heavy handed.
Ecuador -- fuck yes my dudes
Spain -- this is very fun. fun is good. I had fun. the last 30 seconds of the video is some #relatable #content
Benin -- wow this YouTube video is more than a decade old. dang that's pretty old. anyway: song is okay
Finland -- this is the best thing so far by a very wide margin. I love it very much.
Italy -- remember a couple Song Contests ago when I talked about music that is good for listening to on a very long drive? this is that kind of music
Hong Kong -- I enjoyed this kind of music more when I was younger. now I'm just kind of eh about it
Iceland -- whoa there buddy! this isn't very good!
Kazakzstan -- ooooooooh it's very good
Canada -- I have a friend who is a really big fan of this band and so I've heard a bunch of their songs because he made me listen to a bunch of them, but it's just... not really the kind of thing I care about at all
Latvia -- I held up my cat's paws and forced him to dance to this song. I don't think he particulary cared for it.
Cote d'Ivoire -- love me an anime song
The Principality of Sealand -- this is pleasant and I feel good about it.
Azerbaijan -- it's very good
USA -- according to the video description this is the opening theme to the anime
Yuri!!! On Ice
and my girlfriend is a very big fan of that anime. that naturally biased me in favor of liking this song. I think I would've liked it anyway if it weren't for that, though.
Burkina Faso -- this is wholly pleasant and I liked it very much.
Philippines -- it's fuckin lit
Republic of Kugelmugel -- this is the only artist on this whole list I've seen live! there's some fun trivia for you all!
Japan -- I didn't really have any strong feelings about this at all tbh
Macedonia -- oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!
Mali -- this is nice but I'm not, like, in love with it. it's nice.
Greece -- it was okay!
