Ecuador -- I like all the individual components of this song but I don't really like how it comes together. it's okay.
Hong Kong -- ehhhh
Canada -- it's really good and I like it a lot
Yemen -- I love how this simultaneously feels very simple and very layered. I feel real good about it
Fiji -- I always enjoy watching videos of a bunch of people crowded in a small room making music together. some of the vocals get a little overpowered by the instruments making them feel a little flat but that's forgiveable.
Albania -- this sounds like if you took several songs I like and put them together in a really disappointing mashup.
Finland -- I liked this more than I think I would've expected but it's not terrific
USA -- all these dudes look really overbearing and their music sounds the same way
Central African Republic -- now these are some sounds I can get into
Iceland -- somehow I knew a song with the title "A Rider Through the Lands of an Infinite Dreamscape" would sound like this
Benin -- I am wildly underwhelmed by this!
Gabon -- you know how sometimes you start listening to a song and it's so good that you start involuntarily moving, like, your legs, and it takes you a few seconds to be consciously aware that you're doing this? this did that to me.
Germany -- I knew in the first 30 seconds of this that it was building up to a thing. it built up to the thing and the thing was good but it didn't... sustain me
Botswana -- it's not for me, but I don't hate it.
Turkmenistan -- this is really, really good. like this is in the rare category of "I like this enough that I'll probably listen to the entire album it's on later"
Malawi -- I don't particularly like the vocals in this but that's about the only thing I don't like.
Wales -- this is one of those things where the moment I stop listening to it I have completely forgotten everything about it
Hungary -- I probably would've liked this more a decade ago, but I still like it a lot now.
Tunisia -- Carly Rae Jepsen is the most powerful entity in the cosmos, and we are nothing before her.
Latvia -- this is not a song that I enjoyed listening to very much.
Uruguay -- this was really pleasant.

NOTE: I took a break here to listen to the theme song for
Splatoon 2
. it would be on my top 10 if it were in this contest

Philippines -- this is fine I guess
Republic of Kugelmugel -- don't tell the people I was friends with on tumblr in 2011 this, but I think Bon Iver is just okay.
Tajikistan -- I can generally handle somewhat liking about one song from this genre per Song Contest. this is the one I liked this time.
Macedonia -- sometimes I don't like the vocals in a song but I don't find them overbearing, but sometimes they're so overbearing that I don't like the song. this is one of those times.
Bhutan -- this is fun. I had fun.

For a mainstream album, One Foot Out was really good. Really solid album lot of good tracks

And here are the final rankings:

Ecuador - Folk metal is a meme to me. This probably isn't technically folk metal but this is still 100% meme, and kind of dumb, but not necessarily in a low-quality way. HOLY SHIT IT JUST BECAME MORE OF A MEME (2:30ish). How. How. Hooooooooooow.

Hong Kong - This is obviously just trying to be a stupid joke. Still better than Ecuador.

Canada - This reminds me a lot of MBDTF. This is a good thing. A very good thing.

Yemen - Hey look, more generic "modern" "indie". I'd like it to stop, please.

Fiji - If anything, this should even more fit the "modern" "indie" archetype of which I utterly despise, but, it somehow doesn't really do that. Guess it's more folky than anything. It's OK, I guess.

Albania - Sounds interesting for what apparently was a charting song at the time. And the lyrics are here... and I'm like, eh.

Finland - Really generic pop that's like, korean or something. Next.

USA - MMMMMM. Good atmospheres. Good playing. GOOD. GOOD.

Central African Republic - Some of the timbre in this song kinda reminds me of Radiohead's "There There". I don't know why this is the first thing I notice. Rest of song is pretty nice. The sort of thing I'd like to listen to while driving down the British countryside in a Japanese car.

Iceland - Some OK black metal, maybe, I guess. EDIT: On a re-listen it's really fucking good, actually. It makes you feel small.

Benin - Australian hip hop... my expectations are not set high for this country

Gabon - Eww. The exact kind of pop music that just plagues your ears and makes you want to rip them off. It isn't the worst, though.

Germany - Ooh, what are these sounds~ Yeah, this is pretty good I guess, but it feels kinda incomplete.

Botswana - I like it kinda. Don't know what more to say.

Turkmenistan - Some very ok chillish rap.

Malawi - I like the weather today.

Wales - interesting video. Song itself is not. At all.

Hungary - This guy is really hot. OK Song.

Tunisia - It's pop... not much more to say.

Latvia - Holy shit does that guy have daedric on his coat? Anyway, song was a notch above ok.

Uruguay - Good technical folk.

Philippines - I don't know???

Republic of Kugelmugel - This guy keeps disappointing me after Sleep :(

Tajikistan - This is going to be physically painful, isn't it. Yeah, it is. We had a MUCH better black metal submission with Iceland. I really just want to listen to that instead. This might be the first song I actually end up skipping entirely (as its 9 minutes long, probably not the worst song overall tho.) Keep at it, Iceland. Please drown out this trash. I regret listening to this in its entirety, but at least it's over...

Macedonia - Ear refresh after the horror that was Tajikistan. It's pretty good. I think I may be warming up more to folk music in general, idk.

Bhutan - Eh. Some lo-fi retro shit.

Yeah I think I went too unremarkable, not expecting a strong finish here

(I still love my song tho)

(also I found it weird that several people have related Britishness to this song when the Byrds is actually an American band)

Also in song order this contest started really weak and suddenly got really strong

Bhutan was great musically but the effects on the vocals caused genuine pain but it still got a good score because the rest was good
The carly rae jepsen one confirmed my feelings towards her and made me wish for the ability to give negative points to a song
Echo and the Bunnymen is now on my musical backlog, I was aware of them but that song really made me want to give them a try (think it got my 12? idek)
Can't remember anything else I did all the scoring last night

I'm lazy and last minute and give lazy descriptions too.

Hungary- That was pretty and wonderfully relaxing.
Gabon- That was nice. I thought the voice would get to me but I liked it.
Tajikistan - I should not like this. (somehow I do?)
Botswana - ooh Echo and The Bunnymen! They're cool and stuff.
Malawi - Started off looking at the titl like this will be boring. Then it started and was like this sounds so nice. Then the vocals and was like err...then the lyrics and was like well ok then.
Fiji – They sound so good singing together! But I don’t like the room they’re in. Mostly like it, but I’m a little picky.
Germany- Pretty good. But a neutral kind of good.
Uruguay - Points for the parts that were good, the parts that weren't the parts that sounded like the beginning.
Ecuador – Darn it, I don’t prefer female vocals usually, I was hoping it would be a man singing. Was still good, just crushed my hopes.
Macedonia- I didn't like their picture so I didn't think it would be good but it's pretty decent.
Bhutan- It's cool I suppose.
USA - It exists and I'm listening to it.
Hong Kong – This is scary.
Iceland- um. Vocals make me not all calm and happy like the music made me think I would be!
Philippines- ok. Better than expected.
Canada- Expected worse!
Kugelmugel - got bored
Yemen - blahhh
Wales- boring
CAR- Davsto song is davsto song.
Finland - I liked this one part of it and the rest was painful.
Albania - no like
Tunisia- Nope.
Benin- No thank you.
Turkmenistan - This made me frown. I actually felt myself frown when it started.

Ecuador (Eluveitie) -
The intro was literally painful and it didn't get much better.
Hong Kong (Children of Bodom) -
Lmao this guy sounds like a muppet is this for real
Canada (Ficus) -
The atrocious mixing distracts from the corny flow at least.
Yemen (Maps & Atlases) -
Just when I had lost all hope in this contest. More of this please.
High points.

Fiji (Goose House) -
I was only sorta getting into it throughout the beginning part, but the chorus blew me away. Lots of talent in this group, their pitching was for the most part on point. Great stuff!
High points.

Albania (Mono) -
Not my thing at all.
Finland (Jimin) -
Hard to get into this one. Lacks cohesiveness.
USA (sleepmakeswaves) -
This wasn't terrible.
Low points.

Central African Republic (The Byrds) -
Honestly I think the harmonies are part of what killed this song for me.
Iceland (Spectral Lore) -
I would have rathered a Britney Spears cover contest than a metal contest.
Benin (TZU) -
Nah
Gabon (Vinyl Theatre) -
Oh god fueled by ramen. Yea this is pretty much what I was expecting.
Germany (Dredg) -
I didn't really feel strongly either way about this which might mean I'll have to give it points.
Botswana (Echo and the Bunnymen) -
This song could have been a minute and a half long.
Turkmenistan (Nines) -
British Isaiah Rashad flow? On a cool beat.
Mid points.

Malawi (Danny Schmidt) -
This contest is making me give points to things I don't like ahh
Low points.

Wales (Dappled Cities) -
Not good
Hungary (VK) -
I'm ok with this getting points.
Low points.

Tunisia (Carly Rae Jepsen) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRZ2Sh5-XuM (
High Points
)
Latvia (Bella Morte) -
PLEASE LORD FORGIVE ME ILL TAKE THE METAL
Uruguay (Chris Thile) -
Video unavailable, but I found another version of what I believe is the same guy? And it's nice.
Low points.

Philippines (Zak Abel) -
Groovy.
Mid points.

Tajikistan (Imperial Circus Dead Decadence) -
I couldn't have truly called this the worst contest in recent memory without some animetal. So thanks for that.
Macedonia (First Aid Kit) -
Almost good.
Bhutan (Sheer Mag) -
Yea I dig this a lot.
Mid points.
