Scummies 2008 Nominations! (Deadline: 1/15)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Jan 11, 2008 3:30 am

Post by Mr. Flay »

Valid nominations for this thread include games
ending
between January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2008.
See the second post for a list of currently valid awards; should a new category be needed/added, it will be open for nominations as well.

As usual, the nomination should be in the following format:
Nominate:
Playername

Award:
Awardname

Game:
[link]
Please provide a link, it makes the facilitator's job easier.

Someone can then second this nomination to have it made available to the judges. Thirding, etc is not necessary. Have fun!

Now that there's a new year of Scummies, I'd like to revisit my proposal for the
Leonidas Award
for Best Performance in a Losing Cause.

Since this game ended January 2 I have to put this here.
I would like to see if it can get the nom for best newbie game town. Most everyone talked and the game went really quick in comparison to other games. Plus both scum died with no town fatalities.
Nominate Newbie 520

@farside:
1. quantity =! quality
2. Pie E7 with a mafia roleblocker who has to choose between killing and blocking is broken for the town, especially when the day 1 lynch is accurate for the town.
3. Self-nominations almost always fail on general principle.

You also might want to consider nominating the Category first. There isn't currently a separate award for Newbie towns, unless I seriously misread post 0 of this thread.

Who is going to know about it and acknowledge it if someone doesn't say something about it. I don't care that I was in it and I really don't notice other games of other people don't have that type of time. The catagory in general is I think under best newbie. If it is considered self nom then I will nominate Mizzy for said game
Nominate Mizzy

True, but they do have to get the right lynch first... that takes some skill.
3. Self-nominations almost always fail on general principle.
True enough, but usually because no one will second. Let the judges sort it out...

*shrug* I think you could mention it under the Pro-Town Oscar, if this category isn't the right fit (and it might not be unless both scum
were
the ICs, in which case it was all the more impressive of a win).
Retired as of October 2014.

I was in newbie 520 with Mizzy, farside, and Adel. I admit the town, which includes me, did very well in the game. It was my third forum game and I think i did pretty good. But I am a little too humble to nominate myself for anything. If someone nominated me for something I'd accept it but I have no desire to nominate myself for anything. A few coments should be made based on what Flay mentioned.

Only 1 of the scum were IC's.
Wether we had done the massclaim thing or not I fully intended on pushing for the lynch of the second scum come day 2. Me, Farside, and oprice all suspected him when day 2 began. The guy we lynched day 2 made most rational sence to have been paired with the scum we lynched day 1.

Half the reason the massclaim worked was because both the doc and cop lived to day 2. I was the doc who protected the cop and ensured that we made day 2 as the mafiakill failed. Had Pug, the last scum, been able to block too he said he would have targeted me with the block. I still think we could have gotten Pug lynched but the cop would have died as a result. The cop dieing would have ruined the massclaim.

A lynch of a goon in a situation where a roleblocker can NOT do both is exactly the same as lynching a roleblocker that CAN do both. The mafia face a serious disadvantage if both cop and doc survive to day 2 and the cop has investigated someone other than the doc. 3 confirms vs 1 mafia is unbeatable. Our town did good acomplishing that scenario.

If there was a Mafia Goon that did take out the cop and/or doc nights 1 and 2 and did win despite their roleblocking partner getting lynched day 1, they would deserve a scummy BIG time.

Because situations like these can arise and grant victory to those that earn them under conditions where their experiance is tested, I will nominate the catagories..

BEST NEWBIE GAME TOWN

and

BEST NEWBIE GAME MAFIA

not sure if that is too much like best newb performance but I'll throw it out there and you guys can think about it. If the catagory goes through farside can nominate our game for it if she wants, I am not going too.

Also I'll 6th support for the leonidas idea aswell while i am here.

I disagree with the best newbie game town and mafia.

Just nominate them for best town or best mafia if they were extra-ordinarily, history-in-the-making games. There are 2 ICs in each newbe anyway. 3 out of 5 of the newbes don't stick around for more than a few months. Also, beginner's luck applies a lot more than really ingenious solid play from start to finish; remember that game where the town killed all the mafia in 3 pages without a single casualty ? Newbe games are training grounds, where the ICs focus on winning is deterred by their focus to show the newbes how to play and the social norms of MS. I don't think newbe games are all that memorable to MS as a whole, and there shouldn't be any awards for them. That's my take on it.

I agree and disagree with this. There are some newb games were the newbie try really hard and work on finding the scum (unless they are scum). My first newb game I had to go it alone and my scum partner when awol and somehow I ended up winning the game. I didnt' think it was a great game because most of the work was done by the IC's. So I think in general you can find both newb games fun and fustrating. If people find some that helped and they did good they should be rewarded. Just my two cents.

My take on it is that Newbie Games should not be viable candidates for Best ____ awards, but individual newbies should be legitimate candidates for individual performance awards.

Thank you Maz Medias, my view entirely.

Farside, I don't think being on the site for 3 weeks and being a quick learner deserves 5 players an award. If they did really well, give them a best town award. No such thing as best newbe town.

nominate: Thok
for best performance as a replacement in Open 19: Nightless.

I think that's a good category to have, and Thok's play fits perfectly there. If we are unwilling to have that category, I think he merits consideration for best performance, town.

Nominate VitaminR for best performance: town

Game: open nightless, check adel's link.

(not that I think Thok was better or worse, but both deserve at least some chance to be nominated).
