Song Contest 207 (Results posted)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Oct 25, 2023 9:52 pm

Post by Song Contest »

Welcome to the Two-Hundred-and-Seventh Song Contest!
This contest is sponsored by the 207 series commuter train operated in the Kansai region of Japan.

Submit your song via this FANCY FORM!

What is the MafiaScum Song Contest?

The MafiaScum Song Contest is a competition modeled after the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It's a means to gain exposure to new music through the tastes of your peers, like it or not. Those that enter must also vote for the people they are running against based on how much they like the songs. Everyone picks an alias in the form of a country (any one of your choosing) and sends in a song that they like in order to expose it to the other contestants. After voting, they are tallied in the thread and a winner is named. No matter who wins, everyone wins by gaining new knowledge of songs, artists, albums and genres of music in the process!

List of Previously Entered Songs

How to Participate in the Song Contest:

1. Find a song that you like on any internet medium that isn't restricted or private.

2. Submit it via the form linked above!

3. After submitting, you must confirm that you've entered by either posting in this thread or sending a PM to the Song Contest account.

4. Wait until I reveal the entries. You may or may not be cut (as stated at the end of this post).

5. Once entries are revealed, you will rank your top 10 countries! You will do this via a Google Form link to be provided later. The point values are as follows:
12 points - 1st
10 - 2nd
8 - 3rd
7 - 4th
6 - 5st
5 - 6th
4 - 7th
3 - 8th
2 - 9th
1 - 10th
Please rate fairly by giving all countries a listen. You may not vote for yourself. Everyone, regardless of entry or cut status, may vote, so you can still participate even if you chose not to enter or if you got cut! However, if those that entered and are accepted do not vote, they will get a point penalty (see below), so please consider that before entering.

6. Wait for results. It's that simple!

What entries are/aren't allowed?

In order to eliminate bias, certain entries based on previous performance are banned. After dozens of contests and a following of a vague "Code of Ethics" by the Song Contest population, there have been so many entries that a rule system is now in place as to what can and cannot be entered. Please refer to the list of entered songs linked above and CTRL+F your artist AND song name to make sure it isn't included in the following list.

What isn't allowed?

-You cannot enter an artist that has won ANY contest in the past, no matter how far away that contest is.
-You cannot enter an artist that has been entered in the last 15 contests.
-You cannot enter a song that has been entered before, regardless of placement. (You can enter a cover or different version of that song.) For example: You cannot enter in "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, but you can enter in "The Hardest Button to Button" by The White Stripes.
-You cannot enter an artist that has achieved a top-three finish in a Battle of the Best. For example: You may not enter anything by the Doves, as they got 2nd in a BotB.
-You cannot enter something that is not a 'song'. We generally interpret this term very loosely, but here are some examples:

Things considered a song: Anything created with an actual artist and song title that is INTENDED for the listener, even if it's painful to listen or even if there's nothing included (Examples: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Eminem - Lose Yourself, Barney - I Love You, John Cage - 4'33, Sunn 0))) - 0))) Bow 1, etc.)

Things not considered a song: Anything without an artist or title, a video clip of something random, a comedy routine (unless it's an actual song a la Stephen Lynch), a large square wave, an animal barking, total silence not being attributed to an artist, etc. (Examples: A clip of a comedian's standup special, an ibex screeching, a clip of a game show, a clip of someone screaming, etc.)

I will let you know if your entry does not meet the criteria of a 'song', but it should be fairly obvious.

What IS allowed, then?

-You can enter an artist that has achieved second place or lower at least 15 contests ago, as long as you do not repeat a song by that artist.
-You can enter an artist that reached the top three in a song contest, unless it won that contest or also got top three in a Battle of the Best.
-You can enter a different version of a song entered before, such as a cover (or the original if the cover was entered first). For example, Johnny Cash's Hurt has already been entered, but you can still enter Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt.

Other than that, you're good! If your entry violates one of these rules, you'll have until the deadline to fix it or we reserve the right to deny your entry (as if you haven't entered one at all) due to time constraints.

Voting

Anyone is welcome to vote regardless of whether they've entered a song into the contest, but
those who entered songs are required to vote
. If you enter a song and fail to vote, you will be penalized in the form of deductions from the points your song earned from other people's votes (see below).

If fewer than 75% of the people who entered the contest have voted by the end of the first deadline, the voting deadline will be extended, and anybody who hasn't voted will get a penalty. This process will repeat until either 75% of entrants vote or until 16 days have passed (three extensions). As more extensions are needed, those who haven't voted yet will receive escalating penalties, as follows:

-If you fail to vote and fewer than three extensions are needed: You lose 12 points
-If you vote after the first extension: You lose 5 points
-If you vote after the second extension: You lose 10 points
-If you vote after the third extension: You lose 15 points
-If you fail to vote, even after three extensions: You lose 20 points

Ties in final scores will be broken in favour of the entry with the most first-place rankings, then the most second-place rankings, and so on.

All ballots received before the final results are posted will be accepted, even if they come in after deadline.

Reserved Countries

1. First-time entrants

2. Last winner (AGar)

3. Current Song Contest Team (ChannelDelibird)

4. Any entrant who was cut in the period of the last 3 contests (except those cut for not voting) and has not used their guaranteed bid.

Spoiler: For anyone who wants some brief thoughts.
Chile - Pleasant easy listening. This was reasonably enjoyed. 3.5/5

Namibia - Technically competent, but I found it grating and unenjoyable. 1.5/5

Peru - I particularly enjoyed the opening. This is something I quite enjoyed. 4.5/5

Barbados - I like this song a lot, and it's something I can relate to immensely. The pacing is something I love. 4.5/5

Mali - I feel like I could repeat what I said about Chile here. This would make enjoyable background music. 3.7/5

Mt. Celeste - Not my taste, but the jazz tones help sell the piece. 2.3/5

Tanzania - Decent. I could see myself listening to this again some time. 3/5

Sweden - This is decent. I like this genre as well. I like this as a change of pace in an otherwise slow contest as well. 3.4/5

San Marino - I feel very strangely about this song. This song itself is fine overall, but I would not search it out because the genres clash for me. 2.7/5

Sumer - I actively dislike this. It's too busy. 1.1/5

Orlando - I liked this. Above average. 3/5

Scythia - I have no strong feelings about this song. It's nice, but doesn't stand out from the other entries to me. 2.8/5

Antarctica - This song is in a genre usually out of my tastes, but I'm more used to electronic music. The song is competent and well done, and feels enjoyable. 3.2/5

Spoiler: a much more engaging batch than last time

Jorn - The Day the Earth Caught Fire (Sweden)
This is "I want to bounce and sing along even though I don't know the words" energy. Okay, now I'm getting some words, excellent.

Nanowar of Steel - Disco Metal (San Marino)
Oh no. This one has that same "I want to bounce and sing along even though I don't know the words" energy. How can you do this to me, with back to back songs to boot?!

Adrian von Ziegler - Ancient Storm (Bangladesh)
Hard to go wrong with Celtic music.

Farewell Fighter - Golden (Barbados)
The repetitive note during the verses does a lot of work driving the song forward, keeping the pace energetic. I can't understand anything of the final, chaotic verses, but I'm a bit of a sucker for big overblown finales so it works anyhow.

Evan Call - Bullets for My Brothers [Acoustic] (Mount Celeste)
I wasn't sure about this one from the opening, but the bouncy energy won me over.

Eye Alaska - I Knew You'd Never Fly (Tanzania)
Just when I thought it was maybe getting a little too repetitive with the chorus, even though I liked the ethereal tone, it amped up and got me invested again.

Goon - Lyra (Peru)
Nice and pleasant vocals with some interesting instrumentation.

Macross 82-99 ft. Sarah Bonito - Horsey (Antarctica)
The tune is fine but I don't care for the heavy distortion effect on the vocals.

Suck Brick Kid - How the West Was Lost (Orlando)
Engaging instrumentals and pacing but can you please growl the lyrics less so I can possibly understand what your words are? It was mildly amusing at first to envision Kevin singing this, but after a few of the coarser lines came through that lost its luster.

Supertramp - Easy Does It (Chile)
Chill acoustic song. Was surprised when it suddenly ended because it never quite seemed to do all that much.

Soccer Mommy - Circle the Drain (Mali)
Other than the chorus consisting of the title, it's a bit hard to follow the lyrics as they're not articulated too well, and this song isn't packing enough elsewhere to really get my attention enough to really want to sit here trying to pick out lyrics to maybe better appreciate it.

Water From Your Eyes - Barley (Sumer)
Are we counting mountains with sirens? I'm confused.

Big Freedia - Gin in My System (Namibia)
I guess this is technically music. There's something resembling a catchy beat in there somewhere, but it's mostly just overwhelmed by NOISE.

Spoiler: how i ranked em

Sumer Water From Your Eyes Barley - my only slightly disparaging feeling is not that I have to remove this from my list of potential entries, it's that I wish I had discovered this song in a song contest. I can imagine if I heard this song following some theatrical metal or CW derivative emo my brain wouldve popped like a pimple. This song is fucking good, people. There's something about this one that absolutely scratches some bizarre obsessive-on-the-verge-of-insanity itch I have. There's a bunch of other really good songs off of Evryone's Crushed, but none that quite makes me froth at the mouth like listening to this number.

Chile Supertramp Easy does it - 2 min song that doesn't really start until like 40 seconds in is a bold choice, but this is really good! Supertramp is a band I probably should explore more outside of their 2 grocery store muzak hits, cuz they might be way more up my alley(aisle?) these days.

Antarctica Macross 82-99 Sarah Bonito - ay Sarah Bonito. This is a pretty fun song. Man I wish that ending kept going for another minute or so.

Scythia Smashing Pumpkins Tonight Tonight - Corgan & friends for whatever reason has never completely clicked for me. I can't deny that dude's crafted a pretty unique aesthetic and that SP have an almost too perfect signature fuzzy guitar tone. But this one's a ballad, and maybe one I've heard a few dozen too many times on alt-rock radio. And yet I still have a profound memory of this song. I actually caught these folks live at an outdoor festival, which encountered mid-set a pretty heavy storm, and wouldn't you know it, when they played this song there was an absolutely incredible thunder and lightning show happening in the background of it all and everyne was getting soaked. This was back in like 2007 (hey kids i'm old), so they probably played a lil too long before ducking out for theirs and the rest of the audience's safety, but my God you know Corgan himself knew how fucking epic he looked blaring this song in the nasty weather.

Nambia big freedia gin in my system - kinda goofy. very obnoxious. but also kinda fun?

Mali Soccer Mommy Circle The Drain - is this from the record that came out in 2020? I remember kinda liking it but never going back it. Anyway I dunno this is pretty decent and I kinda like that watery guitar line happening in the background, but it's not an amazing song

Orlando Suck Brick Kid - respect to punk like this, but not really my bag

Bangledesh Adrian Von Ancient Storm - so dramatic. so bagpipey.

Tanzania Eye Alaska I knew you'd never fly - it's that singing tone. I just can't do it. I do like this piano outro a lot.

Sweden Jorn The Day The Earth Caught Fire - run for your life

San Marino Disco Metal - metal that doesnt take itself seriously can be really fun. yet a lil too silly and spoofy for me

Barbados Freedom Fighter Golden - this is basically like that tanzania song.

Mt Celeste Bullet for my brother - yeah! what! yeah!

i was going to learn the keyboard and write several ballads
But i went to a barbeque and got lost by the tater salad

Spoiler: Been a while since it was this easy for me to rank the songs
Chile - Supertramp - Easy Does It: Always liked Supertramp, never listened to em much. This one's ok. DECENT.

Namibia - Big Freedia - Gin in My System: This is pretty chaotic and weird. Like, kinda too much going on imo. I could see this being very fun in a live/club setting. But just listening to it at my kitchen table in the morning while drinking coffee? Hmm...DECENT.

Peru - Goon - Lyra: This reminds me of, like, Portishead or something. It's pretty and very airy. Just kind of a zone-out-and-listen song. DECENT.

Bangladesh - Adrian von Ziegler - Ancient Storm: Meh. DON'T CARE.

Barbados - Farewell Fighter - Golden: The dude on the left wearing the Minus the Bear t-shirt looks like Ricky Gervais. I like the ebb and flow of energy in this song. Also the guitar string scratchies. Yeah this is pretty nice! GOOD.

Mali - Soccer Mommy - Circle the Drain: Very pretty and nice with good singing. GOOD.

Mount Celeste - Evan Call - Bullets for My Brothers [Acoustic]: Not what I expected. 's OK. DECENT.

Sweden - Jorn - The Day the Earth Caught Fire: Enjoyable metal with a hint of glam. Nice guitar solo. DECENT.

San Marino - Nanowar of Steel - Disco Metal: Oh, it's Europop. OK. This genre's almost always gonna be a hard sell with me. DON'T CARE.

Sumer - Water From Your Eyes - Barley: Very discordant, I like it. Slightly hypnotic. Main riff is like an off-pitch version of an old blues melody. Very unique and good. Fave so far. GREAT.

Orlando - Suck Brick Kid - How the West Was Lost: Modern punk, meh. DECENT.

Scythia - The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight, Tonight: Never listened to this band much. Just whatever I might've heard on the radio. Never liked the singer's voice much. It's kinda pretty at times I guess? DECENT.

Antarctica - Macross 82-99 ft. Sarah Bonito - Horsey: A certain kind of indie-ish pop I can find some joy in listening to, but not very actively. DECENT.
