Song Contest 208 (Results posted)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Nov 22, 2023 10:36 pm

Post by Song Contest »

Welcome to the Two-Hundred-and-Eighth Song Contest!
That means that this contest now has exactly as many numbered instalments as there are episodes of the poorly aged 2005 TV series How I Met Your Mother.

Submit your song via this FANCY FORM!

What is the MafiaScum Song Contest?

The MafiaScum Song Contest is a competition modeled after the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It's a means to gain exposure to new music through the tastes of your peers, like it or not. Those that enter must also vote for the people they are running against based on how much they like the songs. Everyone picks an alias in the form of a country (any one of your choosing) and sends in a song that they like in order to expose it to the other contestants. After voting, they are tallied in the thread and a winner is named. No matter who wins, everyone wins by gaining new knowledge of songs, artists, albums and genres of music in the process!

List of Previously Entered Songs

How to Participate in the Song Contest:

1. Find a song that you like on any internet medium that isn't restricted or private.

2. Submit it via the form linked above!

3. After submitting, you must confirm that you've entered by either posting in this thread or sending a PM to the Song Contest account.

4. Wait until I reveal the entries. You may or may not be cut (as stated at the end of this post).

5. Once entries are revealed, you will rank your top 10 countries! You will do this via a Google Form link to be provided later. The point values are as follows:
12 points - 1st
10 - 2nd
8 - 3rd
7 - 4th
6 - 5st
5 - 6th
4 - 7th
3 - 8th
2 - 9th
1 - 10th
Please rate fairly by giving all countries a listen. You may not vote for yourself. Everyone, regardless of entry or cut status, may vote, so you can still participate even if you chose not to enter or if you got cut! However, if those that entered and are accepted do not vote, they will get a point penalty (see below), so please consider that before entering.

6. Wait for results. It's that simple!

What entries are/aren't allowed?

In order to eliminate bias, certain entries based on previous performance are banned. After dozens of contests and a following of a vague "Code of Ethics" by the Song Contest population, there have been so many entries that a rule system is now in place as to what can and cannot be entered. Please refer to the list of entered songs linked above and CTRL+F your artist AND song name to make sure it isn't included in the following list.

What isn't allowed?

-You cannot enter an artist that has won ANY contest in the past, no matter how far away that contest is.
-You cannot enter an artist that has been entered in the last 15 contests.
-You cannot enter a song that has been entered before, regardless of placement. (You can enter a cover or different version of that song.) For example: You cannot enter in "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, but you can enter in "The Hardest Button to Button" by The White Stripes.
-You cannot enter an artist that has achieved a top-three finish in a Battle of the Best. For example: You may not enter anything by the Doves, as they got 2nd in a BotB.
-You cannot enter something that is not a 'song'. We generally interpret this term very loosely, but here are some examples:

Things considered a song: Anything created with an actual artist and song title that is INTENDED for the listener, even if it's painful to listen or even if there's nothing included (Examples: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Eminem - Lose Yourself, Barney - I Love You, John Cage - 4'33, Sunn 0))) - 0))) Bow 1, etc.)

Things not considered a song: Anything without an artist or title, a video clip of something random, a comedy routine (unless it's an actual song a la Stephen Lynch), a large square wave, an animal barking, total silence not being attributed to an artist, etc. (Examples: A clip of a comedian's standup special, an ibex screeching, a clip of a game show, a clip of someone screaming, etc.)

I will let you know if your entry does not meet the criteria of a 'song', but it should be fairly obvious.

What IS allowed, then?

-You can enter an artist that has achieved second place or lower at least 15 contests ago, as long as you do not repeat a song by that artist.
-You can enter an artist that reached the top three in a song contest, unless it won that contest or also got top three in a Battle of the Best.
-You can enter a different version of a song entered before, such as a cover (or the original if the cover was entered first). For example, Johnny Cash's Hurt has already been entered, but you can still enter Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt.

Other than that, you're good! If your entry violates one of these rules, you'll have until the deadline to fix it or we reserve the right to deny your entry (as if you haven't entered one at all) due to time constraints.

Voting

Anyone is welcome to vote regardless of whether they've entered a song into the contest, but
those who entered songs are required to vote
. If you enter a song and fail to vote, you will be penalized in the form of deductions from the points your song earned from other people's votes (see below).

If fewer than 75% of the people who entered the contest have voted by the end of the first deadline, the voting deadline will be extended, and anybody who hasn't voted will get a penalty. This process will repeat until either 75% of entrants vote or until 16 days have passed (three extensions). As more extensions are needed, those who haven't voted yet will receive escalating penalties, as follows:

-If you fail to vote and fewer than three extensions are needed: You lose 12 points
-If you vote after the first extension: You lose 5 points
-If you vote after the second extension: You lose 10 points
-If you vote after the third extension: You lose 15 points
-If you fail to vote, even after three extensions: You lose 20 points

Ties in final scores will be broken in favour of the entry with the most first-place rankings, then the most second-place rankings, and so on.

All ballots received before the final results are posted will be accepted, even if they come in after deadline.

Reserved Countries

Antarctica
Bangladesh
Barbados
Chile
Mali
Mount Celeste
Namibia
Orlando
Peru
San Marino
Scythia
Sumer

Deadline for entries is Sunday, 3 December at 11:59 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time.

Spoiler: If we get more than 26 entries, the 26 participants in the competition will be decided based on the following criteria:
1. First-time entrants

2. Last winner (BS2000)

3. Current Song Contest Team (ChannelDelibird)

4. Any entrant who was cut in the period of the last 3 contests (except those cut for not voting) and has not used their guaranteed bid.
3 Contests remaining: Nobody!
2 Contests remaining: Nobody!
1 Contest remaining: Nobody!

5. Everyone to whom rules 1-4 or 6 do not apply

6. Any entrant who failed to vote in the previous contest

Anyone who does not make the cut is guaranteed a spot in one of the next three contests.

There was a time, during college, when I thought of HIMYM as my favorite TV show, or at least my favorite comedy. Then it dropped off Netflix and I stopped watching it for years. The next time I watched it, a few years ago, I wondered why I ever liked it so much.

I've extended the entry deadline to the usual time on 7 December.

We don't quite have the minimum for a contest at the moment, so any further entries would be very welcome indeed!

Spoiler: no metal??! has to be a first

Namibia Haven't Yo Heard - ooh love this vibe a lot! 6.75 minute song that does not overstay it's welcome at all.

Mali Holy Holy Believe Anything - kinda MGMT-lite but I like it. love me some lightly distorted vox and some other effects too. this gets me a bit nostalgic.

Spain Haley Hendrix - sad goil music is rather oversaturated these days, but this is pretty good. also shouting that you need to start a garden might be the most early 2020s thing i've ever heard.

Chile My God Has A Telephone - another great vibe

Russia IC3PEAK - oh this is really good. not what I was expecting. very chilling and sinister

Mount Celeste Snail's House - even judging this sans video this is a pretty lovely track

Marrowind Shab - mmm this is nice.

Scythia The Light In Us All - this is from a game? this sounds straight out of a commercial. very early 2010s. like every trope to where it almost feels AI-generated. but shit fine with me, i'm a sucker for that era.

Ybor City Pet Lizard - the back of my caAaAaaArrRrrr. very domestic lyrics. I do like the video. And ultimately this is pretty tolerable for the genre.

Portugal Porpoise Spit - wasn't expecting a barband sound at all. can't make out the accent. scottish? Very 90s.

Libya The Kinzie Affair - whoOooOooaaAAaa-oOooH. oh this bridge is a bit unfortunate. this adorable video relic helps. can't wait for this to come out on itunes

i was going to learn the keyboard and write several ballads

Spoiler:

Faramarz Aslani - Shab

i really really enjoy whatever is going on with the production of especially his voice that makes it sound all fuzzy and wavering. no idea how intentional that is but it adds a lot to the texture of it for me. the music is cool too. i like how the guitar just feels like it's doing it's own thing sometimes, but in a way that still fits. my main complaint is i wish it didn't just fade out at the end. it's so unsatisfying when songs do that

Patrice Rushen - Haven't You Heard

yeahhhh. that intro deserves the whole minute that it gets. very successfully gets me hyped for the song. but actually i think my favorite parts are that and the solo later. the vocals are nice enough and im very into it at first but after a few minutes yes i have heard already thanks for making sure though

Snail's House - Christmas of a Wandering Ghost

ok this is pretty cute. i do feel like im on an adventure with a wandering ghost in a spooky wintery mansion. it gets a little repetitive but i love it for the first couple minutes

Haley Heynderickx - Oom Sha La La

hey, i used to really like this album, although this is like my least favorite song on it tbh. i haven't listened to it in a couple years. i think now it doesn't do as much for me as other similar things that i've found since then, but it's still nice. some of the lyrics in this one feel like they want to be big thief but don't quite land

Quelle Chris - Obamacare

the beat on this is fun, and i like his voice. has earl sweatshirt vibes. i like when that faint shouting in the background gets added in. i kinda thought the lyrics would be more compelling than they were, after listening more closely i didn't notice much in them that stood out to me

The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY - My God Has a Telephone

this is nice. i think for being soul-ish it kinda feels like it doesn't have enough soul to it for me. but it's enjoyable enough

Porpoise Spit - Mary

theres something about the singer's voice that i don't love but at the same time i like the things that they do with it. kinda similar with the lyrics where i like what they're saying but don't love how they phrase them. in general this is decent though

The Kinzie Affair - No Means No Mister

im kinda getting vibes from the lyrics that make me feel weird, and the music wasn't interesting enough for me to want to keep coming back to it to figure it out. not bad but just sort of generic sounding

Holy Holy - Believe Anything

feels a little sterile but it's alright. the chorus bothers me but the rest is not bad. just not really my thing i think. reminds me of glass animals a bit

Pet Lizard - Fixed Gear

this type of thing can be pretty hit or miss for me and i think this one mostly misses. almost feels like it's a self-parody at some points in how much it leans into the cliches of this kind of sound

Jim Guthrie & JJ Ipsen - The Light in Us All

listening to this feels like im watching an ad but like not in a super unpleasant way, except for how i think im instinctively pushing back on a perceived desire for me to be uplifted. i just feel like this should be accompanied by stock footage of people smiling as they help out at a food bank or something

Spoiler: wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-whammy
Scythia - Jim Guthrie & JJ Ipsen - The Light in Us All: Very tired indie-pop riff. Sounds like it was made for a commercial. DON'T CARE.

Portugal - Porpoise Spit - Mary: Very muddy guitar mixed with slightly manic vocals is an interesting combination. Parts of this kind of reminds me of, like, U2. DECENT.

Mali - Holy Holy - Believe Anything: Hm. DON'T CARE.

Spain - Haley Heynderickx - Oom Sha La La: It's nice and chill. DECENT.

Mount Celeste - Snail's House - Christmas of a Wandering Ghost: I like the grand synthiness of it, and the breadth of the melody. DECENT.

Chile - The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY - My God Has a Telephone: Very nice, chill, fun. DECENT.

Ybor City - Pet Lizard - Fixed Gear: It's got some nice punchy bits, and hey, a lil guitar solo. Not bad. DECENT.

Namibia - Patrice Rushen - Haven't You Heard: Very disco. But like, the good kind. DECENT.

Morrowind - Faramarz Aslani - Shab: Kinda nice to listen to. DECENT.

Zanarkand - Quelle Chris - Obamacare: Weirdo glitchy samples, I love it. Simple, but unique and nice. GOOD.

Russia - Ic3peak - Грустная Сука: Weirder and darker than the last one. GOOD.

Spoiler: Reactions
Scythia // The Light in Us All - Jim Guthrie & JJ Ipsen

Perfectly pleasant, but feels more like a collection of all the jolly folk-rock cliches of the past 20 years than a track with its own identity. I felt like voices were going to break out into "home, let me go home, home is wherever I'm with you" at any moment.

Portugal // Mary - Porpoise Spit

The guitar style is a little less melodic and a little more clangy than I usually like, and I probably could have done without some of the lead vocalist's more athletic yelps. But I thought this landed in an interesting 'what if the Killers were more punk' space and it had some neat lines in it. Probably not going to seek it out on my own time but definitely felt like it had a raison d'etre.

Mali // Believe Anything - Holy Holy
(my entry!)

Holy Holy have been putting out some of the consistently best work in indie rock over the last few years, while gradually evolving and experimenting with their sound. This is the opener and my favourite track from 2021's Hello My Beautiful World, which I'd put at a close second in their discography to 2019's My Own Pool of Light.

Libya // No Means No Mister - The Kinzie Affair

Ending the chorus with "thinking with your" and then starting the next verse with your "Richard" is cute, okay. And I'm kind of in love with the 2009-ness of this YouTube video, haha (will not affect my points). Song is fine, but mostly passed me by.

Spain // Oom Sha La La - Haley Heynderickx

Parts of this work pretty well for me; nice gentle guitars, a very pleasant baseline for her voice. But oh boy, these lyrics grated on me like nobody's business. "Arbitrary sonogram" is total nonsense but I could maybe be talked around on it if Heynderickx laid out exactly what she was going for with it. "The brink of my existence essentially is a comedy", though... you fucking what, mate? Nothing will convince me that "brink" has any right to be in this line, the result is total gobbledigook and she has the temerity to repeat the damn thing later on.

Mount Celeste // Christmas of a Wandering Ghost - Snail's House

The snares on this are pretty cool, but there is a harsh edge on some of those higher synth notes that is nails-on-chalkboard-adjacent. A neat edge of mystery to the whole thing, but I don't think it's doing enough to draw me in for repeat listens and I definitely think it had pretty much made its entire point by the halfway mark.

Chile // My God Has a Telephone - The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY

Very nice gentle soul groove, although I definitely don't get anything in particular out of the lyrics. They're saved from being actively off-putting by how small-scale they are - there's nothing preachy here, just a guy saying "this is how I get through the day", basically, then upping and leaving before he has time to make it weird. Fair play. The whole thing ultimately feels very slight - it's rare that a sub-three-minute song feels even shorter than its runtime, but I felt that here - but it's so harmless that I'm not gonna get mad.

Ybor City // Fixed Gear - Pet Lizard

Not really my usual style of guitars or vocals but this kinda worked for me anyway. It felt like they packed quite a lot into three minutes of runtime. Pretty much all of this contest so far has dropped into my "I liked it alright" category and this will as well, but it might be at the top of that group.

Namibia // Haven't You Heard - Patrice Rushen

Ooh, some disco! I can work with this. It'll be one of those where, if they nail the groove, then 6:45 will absolutely fly be for me. This didn't quite hit that sweet spot for me - if I don't want to dance through the extended keyboard solo, then your long disco odyssey hasn't achieved all its goals - but it's still a nice time overall.

Morrowind // Shab - Faramarz Aslani

I haven't the first idea what he's saying but, gosh, that's a lovely voice. This is chill as fuck. I don't know if I'll go out of my way to follow up on it but it's just nice.

Zanarkand // Obamacare - Quelle Chris

My policy on brag tracks is that I have to already think the MC rules for it to work; I want them to earn the right to tell me how great they are by talking about more interesting shit first. I have no idea about what else Quelle Chris has done and in what order but, as an introduction to his work, this doesn't work for me on that level. Especially when the chorus goes from "I am great" to "also I smoke weed", it's like, ooh, daring today, aren't we? I do really rather like the 'demented wind chimes' instrumental aesthetic, though, and the slowly descending melody of the hook, but as a first exposure to Quelle Chris this doesn't really sell me on him as someone who has anything to say that I need to hear.

Russia // Грустная Сука - Ic3peak

The only song in the contest where I could safely say I was entirely uninterested in giving it points. I was kinda intrigued at the start with that moody atmosphere and mysterious vocal, but those bassy farts were really quite unpleasant and they overshadowed everything else for me.

Lots of votes still to come in - I'm pinging those who haven't yet voted so we can hopefully avoid chasing over Christmas.
