It's been 48 hours with no response from RedCoyote. Since there was no official policy on deadlines, I'm now making an official policy that people will be prodded after 24 hours, and get counted as giving an incorrect answer after another 24 hours. This time, I'll go ahead and let SC give an answer for RC on this board, but from now on the policy described will be in place for everyone.

Sorry! I'm here. I was out of town for work this weekend. I didn't think it would come back to me that quickly.

The only one I'm confident on is the last leader of the Soviet Union being
Gorbachav
(misspelled it, I'm sure).

We'll take Gorbachev. How many people said it?

Spoiler:
32!
Unfortunately, that puts you ahead of Vijarada and Xalxe, so you need Ceph and Fen to give a high-scoring answer to get you through to the head-to-head.

Image

QuestionAnswer
The first Soviet Union leader
The largest lake in Russia
The last Soviet Union leaderMikhail Gorbachev (32)
The lowest point in Russia
The official name for the country
The second-largest city in RussiaSt. Petersburg (68)

Fenrir, you need a score of 48 or better to move on. That shouldn't be too hard, right?

Crap, I just thought of one of the other answers and it would've probably scored better.

so I feel like the first soviet union leader might be Stalin, the largest lake might be Baikal, the lowest point in the Caspian Sea, the official name being the Russian Federation, but I'm about equally confident in all of these answers, which is not much. And now I'm questioning pretty much all of them so I guess it's yolo time

I think the one that has the least doubt is
Stalin
for first ruler of the soviet union

sorry ceph

How many people said Stalin?

Spoiler:
Incorrect.
You're really gonna be kicking yourself over this one. The correct answer was Vladimir Lenin, but it wouldn't have scored low enough to put you through. However, you had all 3 of the other answers correct, and any one of the three would have given you a low enough score to move on. :(

QuestionAnswer
The first Soviet Union leaderVladimir Lenin (55)
The largest lake in RussiaLake Baikal (13)
The last Soviet Union leaderMikhail Gorbachev (32)
The lowest point in RussiaCaspian Sea (7)
The official name for the countryRussian Federation (26)
The second-largest city in RussiaSt. Petersburg (68)

Ceph and Fen, you clearly knew the right stuff, but sometimes that's only half the battle. I do hope you play again, as you've once again gone out too soon.

It's time for the first head-to-head! You are now allowed to confer privately with your partner. Since RC and SC had a lower combined total through the first two rounds, they'll give the first answer in the first head-to-head question.

Your category is...
Dates in History.
Below are 5 descriptions of historical events, as well as the month and day each occurred. Give the year of the event you think will be the least well-known.

DescriptionDateYear
Death of Queen VictoriaJanuary 22nd
George Washington inaugurated as 1st president of the U.S.April 30th
President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth (Ford's Theater)April 14th
The Great Fire of London begins at around 2 AMSeptember 2nd
U.S. army led by Gen Hull invade Canada (War of ____)July 12th

RC and SC, what do you think?

Since I seem to be on more than him, I'll go ahead and guess that
George Washington was inaugurated in 1789
so we have an answer in before we get buzzed out. (He thinks so, too; I checked.)

Was 1789 right, and if so, how many people said it?

Spoiler:
It is, and it scores you
36.

President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth (Ford's Theater)April 14th
The Great Fire of London begins at around 2 AMSeptember 2nd
U.S. army led by Gen Hull invade Canada (War of ____)July 12th

How about 1901?

Spoiler:
Correct, and it scores
21!
That gives Vijarada and Xalxe the first point.

Let's see the rest of the board.

For the second head-to-head round, the category is...
Science.
Below are 5 science questions, the answer to each one beginning with the letter “E”. Provide the answer you think will be the most obscure.

QuestionAnswer
By what technique is a direct current used to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction?
Le Chatelier's principle states that a chemical system in what state will counteract a change in it?
What alkane is comprised of two carbon and six hydrogen atoms?
What quantity is loosely associated with the amount of chaos in a thermodynamic system?
What type of proteins catalyze biochemical reactions?

Vijarada and Xalxe, you're up first to give an answer this time.

I can only assume that people listed the wrong century for the great fire of London, that was the one I was most confident in as an already eliminated contestant.
because my first thoughts put all the answers in the 1900s
