Many great things are discovered by more than one person working independently of each other. The thing I might discover could be discovered by someone else eventually. Averting an evil has to be done in the moment. I can't do anything about the 1940's right now, only the 2017s. But if I were to discover the solution to the navier stokes equations, well somebody else would get there eventually.

it really depends what the things are. if it is an evil that would wipe out humanity for example, then choose that.
