I think the problem is with the end of the game. It might be better if 1d5 (say) was rolled after each round, and the game ended after three rolls of a 1. (Three, so that there is some time at the beginning to just play the game without having to worry that the end is near, and so the game does not end after one or two rounds.)

I also think that if there was some way to hide or obscure people's gold counts it might be better.
