My memory's a bit murky on this, but Seattle used to have a basketball team called ... either the Sonics or the Supersonics, and I cannot for the life of me remember if it was the Supersonics and just abbreviated to the Sonics, or if I'm just imagining the "Super" part. I'm not much of a basketball fan, though - not seeing anything super-obvious that leads to, but it's another possible reference that could explain the plural..

I don't see phoenix at all

I thought that it makes sense since pheonix is a basketball team too?? I think. the plural of supersonics is absolutely intentional, so, I think pheonix should be a right option.

I don’t really follow sports too much but I’ve never heard of a team called the Phoenixes, I think based on the mouthfeel alone a team wouldn’t/shouldn’t choose Phoenixes as a name because it’s not easy to chant. Eagles is a football team but again I don’t think it’s that.

Flying/Fire doesn't give you all four clues and also include some unrelated clue like "Eagle".

Germany was the bomb.

I thought about flight clues, but I knew I had to find a way to link Boom to our other words in way that didn't risk setting off Germany- I thought about something like ARTILLERY to hit Boom/Cover/March, but the World War connection was too big a risk. Other clues about the sky could have roped in telescope, but then Skyscraper was in the way. In the end I had to hope that somebody would get "Has a team in the same league as the Supersonics / Is a sports team like the Supersonics" for Phoenix and Eagle.

Awesome clues btw! If we didn't guess 3 of blue, I think we would have won. haha

Lead is absolutely my first choice if we are going to guess. There is an inherent value in making it harder for them to give clues, though.

Yep. But looking at the squares, doesn't seem to have much connected with lead. So I think guessing lead, even if it is not our clue, doesn't help them much.
