My proposition is as follows:

We play out this round. If we successfully guess all 4 words, and the other team objects to this being counter as a win due to the clue situation, we call it a draw and proceed to play again with teams as they are and a new grid.

However, if we fail to correctly identify all 4 words, I think the game should continue because the other team would very likely win with Haschel’s next clue and it seems unfair to deprive them of a win for something that happened on our turn.

I didn’t think through the implication of “M” with spell, or “cat” with life

The clues meant to be attained were:

LEGION — eagle, foot (for foot soldiers) and ghost (as in the biblical figure of legion who was possessed by many spirits)

M — I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to check past games to see familiarity with James Bond, I only remembered it being mentioned but not if people said they knew it well or poorly. Overall I decided not to check as I was unsure of the rules. It was meant to be spy (she’s a spy) lead (she’s Bond’s boss) and ghost (spoiler: she’s dead, and I thought maybe she featured in spectre in Bond’s head or something? Not sure)

CAT — was meant to be tail and heart (I was just thinking pure anatomy)

TELLTALE — you got it. I thought about giving this much earlier but wasn’t sure if you’d know the story or not. It’s “ghost” because I consider it a ghost story, even if there’s no ghost in the story

Congratulations to the red team and well done to my team on pulling back from what I thought was a pretty awful position to one where we had a shot if Haschel’s last clue hadn’t nailed it

I’ve checked the rules and believe this was the right thing to do. I’m happy to discuss it more post-game if it’s considered unfair. My understanding is that the clue needs to be given before the team starts guessing, as discussing here would be close to direct communication with the Spymaster on what sort of clue he should give, and has the added benefit of knowing that the last guess from the red team was wrong. Had the post been made *before* the red team submitted, in green text, I would allow it to stand as is.

If there’s been inconsistency on this in the past, I apologise; it shouldn’t have been allowed if it was (unless my interpretation of the rules is faulty) and it only slipped through because I didn’t notice.

Also, a clarification based on last game: I’m interpreting the rules for playing this irl as saying that once it’s /your turn/ you shouldn’t start speculating on what you think until your spymaster has given a clue, to prevent collaboration. Specifically, the fact that if you say something once the other team’s turn is over but before your spymaster has the chance to give a clue, it is only of benefit to you which seems to go against the rules. Whereas if you discuss what you’re thinking about on the other team’s go they can also benefit from that — if you’re sure something is one of your words, they can discard it for instance.

Are you all okay with this ruling or does anyone think I’m misinterpreting it?

Errr thank you to the spymasters for basically taking over running this the last week or couple of weeks, I’ve been moving country and it ate into my time to run this pretty significantly. I’m still figuring things out here in Madrid, so there’s gonna be a brief hiatus while I get settled and then I’ll see if I think I can continue to commit to running these. I’m optimistic I will be able to, but if I don’t think I can then I’ll try to find someone to take over moderation from me!

Kind of, yeah. Generally you buy a pass for the day though, so it's not quite the same, but if you end up in the wrong area you can pay for a single fare to get back.

My thoughts were, in sequence, TRAIN, CHECK, AIR, STATE. I think you've mostly covered the reasons. I think fare goes well with check tbh -- you get your fare checked on lots of buses and also both have to do with paying for things. State because state fair, I don't remember the rules on homophones but I wanna say they're allowed as like a bonus. I think we should guess 2-3 and pass.
