Non-Helpers in Combat
What if you’re not the Helper but you still want to interfere
in a combat? What if you want the monster to win? You can’t
directly attack other players, but you can affect combats in several ways:
*Use any one-shot card that can affect combat. Curses have
great potential here. Take away an Item that your rival needs, for
instance.

I am ruling that DS is playing a curse as a non-helper. Therefore he can play the curse to effect the backstab. Curses were designed to directly effect combat.

Also, I am assuming that due to the limitations of playing in a forum setting, DS did not have ample opportunity to respond to Charles announcing his backstab.

I'd rule that DS' card and play is allowed. The backstap happened, then DS countered by moving the player backstabbing away far enough to cancel it's effect

Ah. I use my warrior ability for a +5 (cannot fail), and then I use my freezing explosive potion on myself for a net +0 swing compared to that card.

It just continues until people run out of DxM cards. It's one of my biggest issues with Munchkin in general.

Unlike regular munchkin, 2 people can very easily win without one being an elf. Anyone in the winning combat versus the boss monster will win here.
