Salem 1692


Hidden roles and social deduction during the Salem witch trials

(but not a mafia game or anything to do with Town of Salem)


The year is 1692 in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Evil is lurking and you're convinced that some of your fellow townspeople are Witches! During the game you will draw and play cards to accuse players that you don't trust and help the players that you believe are on your side. When the deck runs out and the Night card is revealed, the Witches will attempt to kill an innocent player.

Rules blatantly ripped off inspired by Korina's from various Mafia and Mish Mash games. I like his formatting and have no shame.

Follow the spirit of the rules, not just the letter, and I reserve the right to change them at any time.

CONTENT RULES
  1. Follow the site rules.
  2. The game may be based off a horrific witch trial, but keep it civil.
  3. #8000FF
    is my colour. Don't use it.
  4. Don't edit your posts. If you have to make it clear what changes were made.
  5. Don't directly quote mod communications, real or faked.
  6. No cryptography or breadcrumbing.
  7. No hidden text or text smaller than this.
  8. You are only allowed to talk about the game in this thread, unless given access to the Witches private chat.
  9. The witches will have communication in a private threat during the Dawn (a unique night zero where they get to place the Black Cat on a player) and Night (when they have a chance to kill a player after the Night card is drawn). They may not communicate privately in other locations or during the day.
  10. Play to your win condition everyone, that's where the fun of the game is.


DEADLINES, ACTIVITY and V/LA
  1. Dawn, Conspiracy, Night and Confessions will last for 48 hours. During normal day gameplay players will have 24 hours to submit their action on their turn, or 24 hours since my last post if their action results in requiring further decisions.
  2. Thread will be locked during Dawn, Conspiracy and Night.
  3. Post
    game advancing content
    every 48 hours (72 hours over weekend) or you'll get a prod. I will reduce the prod timer if you are consistently posting on timer deadline.
  4. If you get prodded three times or don't respond to a prod in 24 hours you will be replaced.
  5. If you are V/LA prods will come every 72 hours.
  6. Please declare V/LA bolded in thread or use V/LA tags.
  7. If you are going to be V/LA for game actions feel free to PM me clear instructions as to what actions you wish to take.
  8. If you are going to be V/LA for an extended period of time or have no internet access, please ask for a replacement via PM instead.


GAME ACTIONS
  1. Your TRYAL cards will have an order. When something calls for you to indicate a card use
    CARD 1
    to
    CARD 5

  2. During Dawn the witches may indicate the player they wish to give the black cat in their private chat or via pm.
  3. During a Conspiracy players submit which card they want to be passed around from the player to the left by PM.
  4. During Night the witches may indicate the player they want to try and kill in their private chat or via pm.
  5. During Night the constable may indicate the player they want to protect via pm. If the constable is also a witch they may do it in their private chat.
  6. During Confession any player may
    CONFESS:CARD
    to confess and reveal on of their TRYAL cards.
  7. During your turn in the day you can
    DRAW
    2 cards or
    PLAY:CARD
    from your hand, indicating any players it needs to target. If you are playing cards and you want to see the result before you continue you may and I will update as quickly as possible.
  8. At any point during the day you may publicly ask to
    REORDER
    your TRYAL cards. You will then be able to change the order of your face down TRYAL cards via pm.
  9. At the appropriate point you may
    USE
    your characters special ability.
  10. If I think it counts, it counts. Please don't make it look like you are taking actions you aren't currently eligible to take.

ROLESEach player begins with 5 face down
TRYAL
cards. There are two
WITCH
cards, one
CONSTABLE
card and the rest are
NOT A WITCH
cards. During the course of the game these cards will move around between players, and at points they will be turned up.

If you currently or have ever owned a
WITCH
card, you are a
Witch
. Otherwise you are
Not a Witch
.

If you currently own the
CONSTABLE
card, you are also the
Constable
. The current
Constable
may be a
Witch
.

In addition to your alignment you will have a face up
TOWN HALL
card, that gives you a specific identity and special ability.


WINNINGThe
Witches
win when all alive players are
Witches
.

The Town wins when all the
WITCH
cards are revealed. There can still be living
Witches
at the point of a Town win.


SETUP and DAWNEach player is dealt 5
TRYAL
cards face down, one
TOWN HALL
card face up, and 3 cards from the main deck.

During the Dawn the
Witches
will give one player the
BLACK CAT
, which causes players to flip a
TRYAL
card during Conspiracy, one of the phases of the game.


DAYTIMEThe majority of the game is spent in day time. Starting with the player with the
BLACK CAT
players take turns to perform actions. During this time everyone can communicate.

On your turn you may either:
  • Draw 2 cards from the deck
  • Play any number of cards from your hand
Cards are
one time effects
,
remain in play modifiers
or
accusations
. Accusations have a level of power indicated by a number of red
X
s. If a player has 7
X
s in front of them the last player to accuse them chooses one of their face down
TRYAL
Cards to reveal. If the player has 4 or 5 of their
TRYAL
s face down still, the accusing player chooses 2 and they pick one, this is to prevent lucky quick games. If a
Witch
card is revealed that player is eliminated.

When you play cards you can not choose yourself as the target of the card.

At any time you may change the order of your face down
TRYAL
cards, but it is public that you have done so.

If you draw the
CONSPIRACY
card, or the
NIGHT
card then you immediately move to that phase and resolve it.


CONSPIRACYIn a Conspiracy each player will choose face down
TRYAL
card from the player to their left. All the chosen
TRYAL
cards are shuffled and dealt out to new players. All players get a free chance to rearrange their
TRYAL
cards.

If a player has the
BLACK CAT
, the player who drew the
CONSPIRACY
will choose one of their
TRYAL
cards to reveal before the Conspiracy is resolved.


NIGHTIn the Night the
Witches
will choose one player to attempt to kill (which may be a
Witch
). The
Constable
will choose on player other than themselves to protect.

After Night is resolved, the target of the
Constable
's protection is revealed. Then each other player has a chance to Confess. If they choose to Confess they reveal one of their
TRYAL
cards.

After everyone who wishes to Confess has done so, the target of the
Witches
is revealed. If that player was not portected by the
Constable
, a Confession or
ASYLUM
card, they die.

The deck (if any remains) and discard pile are shuffled, the
NIGHT
card is placed at the bottom and play resumes from where it left off.


DEATHA player dies if:
  • All their
    TRYAL
    cards are revealed
  • A
    WITCH
    TRYAL
    card was revealed
  • The
    Witches
    kill during the night was successful
On death it is revealed whether or not the player was a
Witch
, and they get 3 last words, which are permitted to be game related.

This is the deck that players start with 3 cards from, and draw from during the day. Unless the order of cards is changed the CONSPIRACY is shuffled in and the NIGHT is on the bottom.

Sorting out rules posts and the like. Rules can be found here but I will be changing one of my place holders to a how to play post.

Game needs 4 players, but works best with at least 6 to start off with the possibility of 2 Witches. Be aware that alignment changing is a core mechanic of the game. Feel free to /in. Expect similar commitment to a mafia game.

I'm locking this been as I don't think I'm gonna be able to get it to fire. I'll probably give it another go in future - either after trying to build a bit more interest before posting first, or seeing whether Isis would be ok with it as a Micro theme (I personally think it's too different to Mafia but there are arguments either way).

If either of those options manifest in future I'll let you two pre-in if you want to.

If you are interested I'm going to be putting together a game of Cosmic Encounter
